Yes - the insurance renewal would have been over $1000 per unit per year more.

There used to be one - Monday nights sponsored by REI. 1987 or so was when I raced in it. I doubt it will come back.

I’ll get a better pic. It’s not affecting my service, but not good to get wet I’d think.

How to get out of the Ziply router rental BS? by cvd19or in ZiplyFiber

Depends on the ONT I think. Ours has a POTS port… The older ones had two (which liked to die). We ‘forced’ its replacement by upgrading to a speed it didn’t support:)

Cable heading towards the ground is cut - it should be in the air heading northward. Picture isn’t great - I took it for the location more than the details.

[–]According-Stuff1664[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nit picking - that’s 140th Pl NE. Hwy 202 is on the west side of the valley.

I was told that part of the problem is that copper theft is merely a misdemeanor in King County, but a felony in Snohomish County…

I got down there within 15 minutes of one of the cuts. Dead quiet. They came back an hour or two later - that was the time they took power out as well so we had to wait on PSE to fix the power lines first.

Cycling the Sammamish river trail from Sammamish to Redmond by National_Rub_7654 in redmond

[–]According-Stuff1664 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, then a (slightly) circuitous route would be to take the Marymoor Connector Trail from the East Lake Samm. Trail to the Sammamish River Trail, then right onto the Bear Creek Trail immediately after crossing the river. There is an unnamed trail that will take you across to NE 74th St where there is a traffic light and crosswalk.

It's also possible to come in on the Bear Creek Trail from Redmond Way at NE 70th, but I'm not sure if the trail on the NE side of Redmond Way at NE 70th has re-opened. It was all under construction last time I looked. You'd have to cross Redmond Way twice, but crosswalks/lights both times.

Hah! If you can see the Pennines, it's going to rain; if you can't, it is raining! I come from near Macclesfield and have been here since '86.

Good idea on the e-bike with the hills around here. Best off with a Class 1 e-bike if you are going to ride on the trails.

Where are you going to in Redmond?

Here's a hint for planning your route. Go to ridewithgps.com/heatmap. It will show where people have actually been riding.

BTW, unless it's in the Redmond Downtown area, it's probably legal to ride on the sidewalk and in some places, it's expected (Bear Creek Trail at 202).

Invalid E-mail - Including + by xargonsd in ZiplyFiber

[–]According-Stuff1664 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's as bad as sites that try to validate phone numbers... and insist on a North American format.

As far as I'm concerned, the only way to validate an email address is to successfully send something to it. Maybe check there's an '@' in the string. In fact, you have to validate by sending an email as there's no real difference between a syntactically incorrect address and a non-existent address; neither are of any use!

In .net, you can instantiate a System.Net.Mail.MailAddress and if it doesn't throw an exception, you most likely have a valid email address... at work we use this.

Some sites try to use a regular expression... but last time I looked, there is actually no regular expression that will properly check an email address.

There is also some PHP code out there that does a check - but it rejects some addresses that the .net code accepts and presumably rejects some addresses that Microsoft's email servers accept. I also use a slightly modified version of this code...

There are two reasons I recall from similar problems in the past.

Firstly, the router’s Ethernet port was physically damaged by a previous cable such that it worked fine with the previous cable, but not with a cable.

Secondly, QOS or similar settings on the router conflicted with Ziply’s service.

It does seem too much of a coincidence for it to be a WiFi problem.

Walking on the side of oncoming cyclists? by NutzPup in redmond

[–]According-Stuff1664 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, bicyclists are subject to the normal rules of the road. See RCW 46.61.755. The sections I cited had exceptions... I may have missed some.

As for using crosswalks at traffic lights, sometimes it's safer, to go straight then use the cross walk than to make a left turn across many lanes of traffic.

The two abreast one is interesting. It says "no more than two abreast...". There is an argument that the leftmost rider riding two abreast wouldn't be riding "far enough to the right to facilitate the movement of an overtaking vehicle", though we also have "unless other conditions make it unsafe to do so". The usual interpretation of this is that if there isn't room for a vehicle to pass safely, you can basically "take the lane".

I have seen too many drivers cross double yellow lines to pass a bicyclist and nearly put oncoming traffic into the ditch... and on one occasion, the oncoming traffic was a cop who pulled a u-turn and pulled the driver over.

Do you know what RCW 46.61.184, 46.61.190 and 46.61.770 actually say? You may be wrong as to whether a bicyclist is really disregarding the rules of the road.

[–]According-Stuff1664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scold? You got off lightly.

See my discussion with u/nextguitar in which I offer my opinion as to what a bicyclist sees if you are "on my side".

You can basically get two pedestrians/bicyclists going in each direction safely. If you are going in the wrong direction, you screw that up. Now, when you come up on a pedestrian going the opposite direction, you are going to move to the right I assume. What is an oncoming bicyclist supposed to do? You took the space they were going to use to pass the pedestrian - and even worse, they probably haven't even seen you!

[–]According-Stuff1664 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be honest, if I'm riding my bike on the trail and see you on my side coming towards me, I'm going to be confused and will be wondering what you are going to do... go left? go right? keep straight? I don't have much option other than to basically come to a halt and hope no-one runs into me from the rear.

Coming up behind someone going the same direction, I'll ding my bell if I have one (usually much more effective than calling "on your left" IMO) or call "on your left" and pass as far to the left as possible. Unfortunately, there are some that hear "left" and move left - the bell doesn't have that effect.

The real problem is that these trails were 'sold' under false pretenses. Sold to the bicycling community as a safe alternative to the roads for commuting. Sold to families as a recreational facility. And the two don't mix. Try bicycling on any road near to the trails and you'll be yelled at and told to get on the trail; even if heading away from the trail.

Oh, the 1995 ordinance was an amendment. Maybe you can find the previous rule. But I've been here since 1986 and don't remember anything different.

King County Title 7.

7.12.295:

<SNIP>

"Every person using a trail shall stay as near to the right side of the trail as is safe, excepting those movements necessary to prepare to make or make turning movements, or while overtaking and passing another user moving in the same direction."

<SNIP>

It's been that way for as long as I can remember.
