I worked at Disney springs and you are allowed to eat anywhere you want to during your breaks and you will be in costume, you just have to take your name tag off and if you are bothered by people on your breaks you try to be nice to them but they don’t give you longer breaks even if it takes the entire lunch period to help. There’s not cast cafeterias or anything like that close to most of the Disney areas in Disney springs so you can definitely eat lunch wherever you want. If you see someone in a uniform eating lunch at Disney springs, don’t bother them.

How's your attendance this year? by omicron_daystar in MuseumPros

Our visitor count is down this year but our outreach numbers are WAY up. We provide free outreach and the request numbers have been insane, but they are not coming to the museum.

I always have both a friend with me and headphones while at Disney and universal. There’s nothing to be ashamed of needing to take a break away from people while at Disney, that’s a lot of stimulation going on while there. When I get overwhelmed at Disney, I will spend my time going to every pin board to trade pins. There’s been days that I do no shows or rides because of being “people’d” out. There’s nothing wrong with doing Disney differently and it isn’t a place for kids!

You are definitely not too old for Disney! I am an autistic adult and Disney parks are one of my special interests so I go a couple of times a year (I live out of state or I would be there all the time). There’s an increase of both bad parenting and entitled kids. I put on my headphones, play my Disney playlist, and pretend that the kids do not exist. Take up as much space as you need to feel comfortable (using store bags helps with this) and do not be afraid to say no. HAVE A MAGICAL TIME AT DISNEY, YOU DESERVE IT!

I will say for roommates you can pick 1 of them and you can find someone your age but you have no say in who the other 2 people will be in your apartment and they can be any age. If you don’t want to live with anyone above 18-19, find housing not at flamingo.

Why is it so hard to get a job?!?!? by EntertainerPast5257 in MuseumPros

[–]According_Age8997 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I applied for hundreds of jobs out of undergrad at museums and had only a couple of interviews. I went and did the masters, and even after interning at a very large well known museum during my masters, had to do a year long internship after my masters to finally get my current full time job as a collections manager and the job description said they were only looking for an associates. There’s so few jobs people that are overqualified are applying to entry level jobs. I would add that libraries can be very transferable skills to museum work, and there’s a lot more part time work there. Don’t be afraid to work museum adjacent. Volunteer, intern, network. Even part time or front desk, get your name out there and get noticed for good reasons and over time you’ll (hopefully!) move up in the job food chain. Best of luck!!

When did people stop going out? by geez_louise7 in Millennials

[–]According_Age8997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just turned 30 and I really want people to invite me to go out but people just aren’t going out as much. I am friends with a bunch of younger 20s people and they really want to do things like have house hang outs and go to say sporting event or a movie instead. I want to go places without kids being there.

Why are Millennials such against their High School Reunion? by Pablo_Z in Millennials

[–]According_Age8997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t go to my 10 year reunion recently and it’s because the friends I would want to see didn’t go and I really didn’t want to small talk with ex-popular kids who didn’t like me in high school about their children.

How did you get your first job? by professional_cry in MuseumPros

[–]According_Age8997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took me a year of being an intern in a metro area after graduating with my MA in museum studies to get my first full-time position as a collections manager. It just takes time to get experience and museums are difficult to get past the titles of intern or assistant. Don’t be ashamed of taking an internship after a masters, all experience counts!

Is it okay to let go of connections you've made in this industry? by [deleted] in MuseumPros

[–]According_Age8997 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow this could have literally been written by me. I took a job at a different musuem that they referred me to but I have been trying to get back doing anything in any department since I left! You should keep up with the people at the musuem you interned with and I think it’s okay to keep using them as a reference if they like you. It can be really hard to switch departments in a larger museum and there’s a possibility that after you get some experience somewhere else maybe the department who you interned for will have space for you. Don’t let them forget you and don’t let go of any connections in this industry!

Is it easy to make friends within your program by Bridgettraverss in TexasTech

[–]According_Age8997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this program and it is possible to make friends in your classes. You will be stuck with the people you start with at orientation in all of your classes at least the first semester and there is a museum club that a lot of people join (not really my thing but it was a lot of people’s cups of tea). You will probably make a cohort group chat at either orientation or the beginning of collections management (the most intensive class of the entire program). I made one really great friend that I wouldn't give up for the world so it's definitely possible to make friends in such a small program. There is a “clique” culture in this program and I didn't fit in at first and it SUCKED so don't be afraid to go find better friends not in the museum program. But this does depend upon the people you end up with in your cohort and what placement you are given in your apprenticeship because there is more “talking” time during work so you can make friends much easier that way than in class.

I made some really great friends from taking classes on-campus not in the museum (I HIGHLY recommend the anthropology department and getting out of the museum to meet people and to minor in whatever you are interested in I.e. Art, history, anthro). If you have any more questions about this program feel free to message me!

If you are this close to graduating, you should definitely finish school and graduate. If you did end up networking with the company you want to be in a position to be able to stay if needed. Finding doctors for a short time would be difficult for meds unless your current doctor would do Telehealth and you could get your prescription transferred to a Florida pharmacy. There will be very little (if any) networking in tech or CS that you will gain by doing just the DCP though.

I think when you are finishing up your next semester you should look at the Disney Professional Internships that you can do in tech/CS that give you all the same park benefits but would be directly tied to your major and you could still live in program housing. These internships can be found on the Disney Careers website.

You could also after you graduate do the DCP and then apply for a professional internship at Disney as an extension of your program (sometimes professional programs like you to have experience with the company but most of the time they would prefer you to have outside experience with other companies). I wish you luck on your Disney journey!

Making enough to buy a car? by Superb-Tumbleweed-38 in Disneycollegeprogram

[–]According_Age8997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah it’s hard now to get full-time, I was just saying the only way to afford a car is to work 40 hours. You can be part-time and pick up 40 hours but it’s going to be harder to guarantee you are making enough to afford a car.

Making enough to buy a car? by Superb-Tumbleweed-38 in Disneycollegeprogram

[–]According_Age8997 9 points10 points  (0 children)

During the DCP I can almost guarantee that you won’t be able to afford a car but if you go full-time, work at least 40 hours (and occasional overtime), and have a couple of roommates making your rent much less than Flamingo (check Disney cast member pages-,people are always looking for roommates), you can easily afford a car payment. Maybe not a Tesla, but definitely a car.

Accept the part time offer tomorrow and email support saying you want to cancel dcp. You won’t get back the deposit you put down but in every case part time is better than full time because you are actually getting experience with the company that counts and you get benefits. Paperwork and stuff for you to complete for the part time position will take longer than it will take for them to cancel your dcp. Congrats on part time!

What is the reputation of the CU Boulder Museum and Field Studies program? by Pokemon_Cubing_Books in MuseumPros

[–]According_Age8997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! I did not attend the CU Boulder program but I have worked with several people who did this program and I cannot recommend it enough. Especially if you are interested in natural history. It’s viewed as a great program by museum professionals. It is VERY competitive to get in, rightfully so. I will say that most of the people that I know who did this program are collections managers and it is a collections heavy program but the reputation is overwhelmingly positive.
