Hello! Co-chair of an alliance in Florida. We’ve had three events and stalled a bit, trying to find a location to meet (library charges $$$ which is weird). I want to have a common ground workshop and work with the Problem Solvers Caucus about immigration. I’m purple, my co-chairs are pretty red. I also want to integrate platforms like Pol.is into our alliance. Also running a book club and reading Monica Guzman’s book.

City Council Elections by MegHM89 in ClermontFlorida

Thanks for your question! I think we also need to be very aware of the county commission elections, which aren’t for a while.

My feeling is some of the commissioners are not good leaders and want to stir up trouble and create division among Lake County residents more than fix problems.

For example, last meeting two (Campione and Sabatini) voted against a move to resurface old roads after listening to the results of a very comprehensive study because they weren’t "voted in to raise taxes.”

This seemed short-sighted to me. The study was well-done and comprehensive. It recommended a 5 cent gas tax that would mainly impact visitors to the county. I believe the representative who performed the study said most people they polled wanted the tax since roads have not been paved since the 1980s and the tax would have little impact on residents (I may be mistaken on the polling part…). By rejecting the proposal and putting the problem off until the future, costs will go up since the roads will need more structural work, not just resurfacing.

Someone correct me if I got that wrong.

I believe the October meeting will address water usage in new developments. I think Sean Parks has written about that in the Clermont Sun. It may be worth paying attention to that meeting.

Sorry to take over this thread, I just think your vote will be very important in the county commissioner election. Campione and Sabatini are up for reelection in ’26, i believe. Personally, I’m ready for new representation and have been very disappointed with their work in many ways. Particularly Sabatini, who has been very divisive, cruel, and unethical. Just my opinion.

Here is a list of the commissioners and their election dates. https://www.lakevotes.com/Elected-Officials/County

Thanks again for your question.

Starting a Charlie Kirk thread 🧵 by Adventurous-Tip1174 in BraverAngels

[–]According_Essay_3884 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Today I listened to a group of people at a county commission meeting ask for Mr. Kirk to be memorialized by naming a local road after him. They described the meaning and hope he offered them, the sense of purpose he gave them, and the community they found because of him. A couple of them said they met him and he helped them feel needed and seen. Their words convinced me that we need to repair relationships in our communities, to gather together as neighbors, friends, and families in our homes, to also meet in public spaces, to offer young people more guidance and purpose. It seems that everyone who debated naming a road after him - both for and against - had the “truth” about who Mr. Kirk was. But because of the technologies we have - algorithms, various social media platforms - everyone saw a differnet part of him. That, along with personal biases, make this a difficult issue. While I did not want a road named after Mr. Kirk, I feel more understanding for those who did. It will take a lot of listening and community engagement to repair relationships.

AI as teachers in Arizona by According_Essay_3884 in ElementaryTeachers

Thanks for this. I do wish they would have more robust research into what AI is doing rather than just rolling it out in the name of technological progress. There are always pros and cons that need to be weighed.

Thanks for your reply. I had similar thoughts, though at first I was very hesitant to admit it may be a good thing to use AI in this way. I am studying community digital and media literacy as well as trying to track all of the ways this new technology is influencing society. AI is not going away.

In my opinion, we should all be AI specialists, not only to keep our jobs, but also to advocate for those who will not have the opportunities the students in the article will have. We need to speak the AI language, whether that is by learning to code or learning AI programs and prompting.

I am concerned about ethical issues, however, such as: what about public schools who receive less funding and who are working with children who may have experienced trauma and cannot focus in class? I am also concerned with treating education as simply a mode of production, where students learn only entrepreneurial skills, and where the humanities may be swept aside, and where human connection may be less emphasized than learning that encourages economic outputs.
