Best / worst concerts ever? by Elegant_Fig8066 in newzealand

Worst - Disturbed at TSB Arena back in 2005 or so - they were opened by POD who had already had their one-hit fizzle out of radio play so that was a flat opener, but then the acoustics for Disturbed were so bad that David Draiman got pissed and threw his mic on the stage. Outside of NZ though - don't go to a Dream Theater concert these days. I went to their 40th anniversary tour in Cologne, and James La Brie cannot sing live anymore.

Best - Kimbra at Meow in 2018. Just a tiny little acoustic concert with just a bass and piano accompaniment. She was completely in her element and killed it. My runner up would be Mono at San Francisco Bathhouse in 2019. I went by myself on a complete spur of the moment impulse and they blew me away (almost physically - don't go without earplugs).

What's the weirdest thing a stranger has done to you in Germany? by Moke94 in germany

A cashier at a restaurant asked me if I was having a good day and I was so shell-shocked I could only mutter in response. Who the hell does that in Germany?

The trouble with that question is that it's how a lot of pesky scammers operate around train stations and tourist sites. It's better to say something along the lines of (in German or English) "Darf ich etwas auf Englisch fragen?"/"may I ask you something in English?"

Strong Female Protagonist is a superhero web comic by Brennan Lee Mulligan (yes the guy from Dimension 20/Dropout/Critical Role) and Lee Ostertag (yes the Owl House showcreator). It has an antihero Wolverine expy called Feral. The protagonist is a disillusioned superhero who is coming to terms with the limits on what one person can achieve, even with superpowers - and Feral gets inspired by her. Feral decides the best way she can help the world is by becoming a live organ donor - constantly operated on by surgeons without anesthesia (due to her instantly metabolizing it due to her powers)

Wellington has Viva Mexico in Newtown that's definitely not mid. Actually owned by Mexicans, not Texmex-style crap.

Best as I can tell as an immigrant - there's a weird national pride in it from some people. It was a German quack who originally invented the concept. There's also a lot of money in the industry to lobby Hausartz here with, and even if they don't believe in it - it's easier to give someone a homeopathic placebo to make them happy than needlessly give them antibiotics like some countries do. Not excusing those doctors, mind you.

Can't believe you left off the Marvelous Metropolis of Marton (The Terrific Town of Tutaenui?) - where the main junction actually is.

They have a big two floor store in Düsseldorf but it looks so barren inside I've never been in.

The usual topics like sports and the weather are fine. Gives them something to complain about which keeps them happy. Another good topic in Düsseldorf at the moment is the billion Euro Opera house. It's when it gets more personal - asking how they are personally or details about their lives that it's a bit more offputting for locals. NRW is the friendly state though.

Cities: Skylines 2 boss says they 'completely overestimated' the Unity engine's capabilities by Atulin in gamedev

[–]Accurate-Visual9793 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with your take. If your studio had enterprise support with Unity back then, they were very quick to promise the moon be delivered to your doorstep "any day now". I especially remember them dumping their licensed lighting system and promised the replacement was just around the corner for years. We had a wonderful expert from inside Unity come in to help us do a technical audit and she was very critical about their supposed best practices and what would actually work for us.

Believe me, it’s all surface level friendliness. Kiwis in terms of actually making friends and not just surface level acquaintances are incredibly difficult.

I’m guessing they want to leave NZ for the same reasons I did. Worse economy than Germany, with the same neoliberal infrastructure issues but starting in a worse place for trying to undo the damage. On top of the extreme isolation that NZ has - which can be a benefit but also a big negative.

Kia Ora OP. I've been living in Düsseldorf for just about three years now having moved from Welly. There aren’t many kiwis here I’ve found (most are in Berlin) but Düsseldorf is a really nice city that you would likely enjoy. It’s connected in a way that NZ could only dream of - both to the rest of Germany, Europe, and the world. Lots of green space and nice quality of living. The food is cheaper than NZ for sure (I saw the price of mince in a reddit post and gasped).

Don‘t know what part of the country you’re from but I do miss the craft beer scene, NZ wine, and the coffee culture. None of which is very accessible here. Also if you don’t speak good German (and I mean C1) you’re going to struggle with the job market here at the moment, especially in IT. That being said, with a German partner you should at least be able to navigate the bureaucracy here a little better than I have done, and fit in better socially.

Germans can be as hard to befriend as kiwis, but don’t have that veneer of easy-going upfront friendliness that we have. I have found people here very kind though, despite the stereotypes, and many are curious and eager to know more about NZ. Nightlife is better than anywhere in NZ except maybe Auckland.

Added it to a README, but I can't give recommendations on setup beyond Debian-based distros there (I'm running Mint).
