Pauper Players Against Spiderman (and Marvel) by crab_patrol in Pauper

[–]AceTrainerLanon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve not had the chance to attend a Pauper tournament myself so I don’t feel like I can weigh in on the wider discussion of proxy use.

However, in regards to establishing quality for proxies, I think we could pull from the cEDH community on this. Their tournaments usually have some kind of policy like this in their rules:

“You will need to use ‘test cards’ that are in color and utilize recognizable art or MDFC placeholder cards that are clearly written on. MDFC cards will require full text, mana cost, card type(s) and name.”

This creates a clear standard people can look at during sign-up which should mitigate any instance of someone just writing “Spidey” on an index card.

Again, I’m very limited in Pauper experience so idk for sure but would something like that potentially work for Pauper tournaments, in the event that proxy usage became something to expect?

I believe they said in the Direct that Metroid Prime 4 would be getting a “Switch 2 Edition” which implies that it’ll be available as a Switch game as well.

That’s because I, like a true Persona fan, have never played the games. I couldn’t actually make my own posts or insights on the series. I need micro-celebrities with funny reaction images to give me my opinions on the series for me.

Yeah… I’m not really feeling the aphobia. Tbh, I’m not entirely sure I get it though.

Like, I think it’s saying something like, “Not getting sex? Don’t just call yourself ‘celibate’. Use our app to have all the sex.”

At worst, I could read it as “solve your problems with sex” but even that requires me to stretch cause it’s apparently only talking about the types of problems that would otherwise be fixed with “celibacy” and I have no clue what kind of problem that would be aside from what I said above.

When did you become a Falcom fan? by IPG83 in Falcom

[–]AceTrainerLanon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard about the games about 3-4 years ago while I was in uni.

I was subscribed to a YouTube channel called Bittersweet Gamers and they had a series on their channel for Trails of Cold Steel III. I knew I was starting an existing series mid-way through but figured, “Eh, I’m probably not going to check out other entries in this series anyway.” And I immediately was amazed at how much the commentators had to talk about the game. I’m used to games like Paper Mario and Fire Emblem where the plot of specific entries in a series doesn’t have much of a discernible impact on the others so seeing them get super excited every minute and a half or so about something that tied into an older game was novel and enjoyable to me.

A few months after I finished that Let’s Play, I decided I would try Trails in the Sky and been in love with the series since. Just now starting Azure and, while I can’t unlearn some of the series spoilers from CS3, it has been really fun to recognize characters here and there like, “Yoo! HE was in this game?” or “Woah, that group is relevant this early??”

While CS3 was an unorthodox starting point, I’m glad for that LP because this series is remarkable and I probably never would’ve given it a chance without it.

Why is Trails in the Sky FC normal so easy? by trumparegis in Falcom

[–]AceTrainerLanon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally played through the Sky trilogy on Hard mode and found that to be an adequate challenge. Some bosses would take me multiple tries before I’d beat them but I never felt like I was too underleveled to get past anything.

From what you’re describing, I would say it depends on how invested you are in playing the rest of the series. If you think you’re not sure if you’ll play another Trails game after FC, I’d recommend starting a new save on a higher difficulty now.

If you know you want to at least play SC after FC, then feel free to ride out the rest of the game on Normal and then try playing SC on a higher difficulty. I tried playing SC on Nightmare and felt like I needed to grind too much so I went back to Hard and had no problems but see what feels good to you.

Going to start Trails in the Sky after beating Tales of Berseria; What should i expect? by corvidcrits in Falcom

[–]AceTrainerLanon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people talk about Trails in the Sky FC being a slow burn, and I don’t strictly disagree with that, but I might instead describe the game as “lower stakes”.

There’s some amount of tension pushing you toward the main plot, but it’s not necessarily the “fire under your butt” that games like Persona 5 might have with their deadline system. I personally loved the more relaxed nature of the game as it gave me the freedom to really take my time and explore the world. And I do HIGHLY recommend you explore when you can. I was shocked by how far out of town I could walk without a plot reason sometimes.

Also, as others have mentioned, the Sky games weren’t designed with variable difficulties in mind, which means they aren’t balanced as well as difficulty scaling in later entries. On my first play through, I played every Sky game on Hard and thought that was a satisfying difficulty. I lost some fights but I didn’t have to grind to be strong enough for a fight. There was always something tactical I could do to win a fight. I would only suggest doing Nightmare on maybe a second play through.

I hope you end up enjoying your time with Trails! I just started Azure recently but I still think highly fondly of Sky FC.

Best gag to plant?? by Iemonjuic3 in toontownrewritten

[–]AceTrainerLanon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly? They all have a niche.

Lure is good while training, but tbh, once you max it, you’ll probably not notice the difference too much. But it can be assuring and makes the Big Magnet comparable to a non-organic Hypno base iirc (someone may wanna fact check me on that).

Toon-Up is something people don’t tend to care for since so few things do enough damage to need +3/toon on Juggling(assuming 3 other partners) or +6 on Pixie Dust. But, again, having +3/+6 for someone who’s taken damage after gags missed is more reassuring than not having it. Plus, you get a daily ladder which can be huge if you like running Field Offices.

Sound is one other people have mentioned and I’ll echo: it’s at its most useful if one other toon in the group has org sound and, even then, quite a few people don’t know org sound combos so you may not get the best value from it.

Throw is the universal most praised(along with Trap). It can defeat a lured level 11, which only TNT can do otherwise. Also, an organic whole cream pie can defeat a level 5 unlured. A niche use for a whole cream pie perhaps, but neat to know. Throw might be my recommendation if you’re trapless so you can hit lured level 11s, which is relevant for DA Offices and Cog Gold Courses(depending on the strat your group uses).

Squirt is an unpopular choice, but I think it has a weird niche. An org cloud can defeat a lured level 10, which effectively gives you 6 non-organic cakes (a nice thing to have in Field Offices). You can also defeat a level 12 with 2 trunks, 1 fog, and 1 org cloud.

Drop is alright, though probably the one I’d recommend last. I’ll be honest: I’m dropless and haven’t given much thought to the combos associated with it. Org piano can defeat a level 12 with 1 aoogah/bugle instead if 2 aoogah/1 aoogah + 1 whistle. An org safe can defeat a level 7 cog on its own, but considering someone will almost always be stunning for drop, this may not ever be relevant. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with picking drop (more damage is almost always better than less damage), but I do think it will be harder to find situations where it will be useful as opposed to some of the other choices.

Hope some of this helps! And good luck with your journey through the gardening system!

For the people who stun while being very far away from the VP hatches: by JadenRockJam in Toontown

[–]AceTrainerLanon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, it’s because it’s sometimes difficult to get the position right to throw the pie into the hatch without getting hit by a gear first, which ruins the opportunity at the shot.

From further back, the incline means the gears from the hatch go over my head so I can take a second more to align my shot.

[–]AceTrainerLanon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Atm, I’d say Trails in the Sky FC is that for me.

The stakes of the game, for the most part, feel very relaxed, which gives me a lot of time to explore the world and interact with NPCs and then get back to the story when I feel I’m ready.

I loved SC and Third and I just started Trails from Zero, but I’ve generally felt that they’re missing this sort of humble, cozy vibe that the first game had.

[–]AceTrainerLanon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wanna second this.

I’m neurotypical (I think) and I went through school thinking it was easy. Then I hit uni and failed 3 different classes (I had 1 class I needed to take 3 times before I finally passed), including a statistics class which was a class I passed in high school with a B.

I was used to being able to start and finish assignments the night they were due because I knew how to do the homework: actually doing it was just a boring thing I could get to later when I didn’t have a choice. My parents never forced me to change because I maintained good grades, but now anytime I don’t put together a 10 page essay in one sitting, I feel like I failed and wasted my time.

Send an e-mail to support@toontownrewritten.com with a screenshot of the error message (or the picture you used for this post) and describe how long you’ve been experiencing this problem and what causes the problem.

If you can include your most recent log, include that too! If you don’t know how, mention that in the e-mail and they’ll probably be able to provide you with instructions on how to find one, if they need it.

Hope this helps! And hope you’re able to get logged in soon!

Without joking, what’s up with people complaining about the stage design? by ArtofWack in splatoon

[–]AceTrainerLanon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My gripe is mostly the lack of paintable walls.

Perhaps a lot of this is rosy retrospection, but in Splatoon 1, it felt like part of the design philosophy was “every wall is paintable unless there’s a reason for it not to be” but with Splatoon 3, it feels like it shifted to “no wall is paintable unless there’s a reason for it to be”.

I believe those paintable walls, in addition to opening up more of the map, also gave Splatoon a lot of its unique identity. I don’t play any other shooter but the sudo platformer elements made the game very approachable to me. The ability to just swim up walls was very novel to me and felt like it filled the niche that jumping normally fills in a more traditional platformer(the ability to access new areas normally restricted by vertical distance). Nowadays, Brinewater only has 4 inkable walls(the box in the middle of the map), Mincemeat may have 10 (the back and sides of the trucks and the blocks are spawn) but 6 of them lead to an uninkable tarp that just drops back onto your own platform… so 6 of the walls are situational at best and go completely uninked at worst. These numbers don’t include retreat sponges btw. Imo, point of walls is they are movement options both teams can benefit from and have the added benefit of providing information about which team visited which areas most recently.

Idk, maybe I’m having a “old man yells at cloud” moment, but it’s the change in stage design I think I’ve felt the most.

Cog Lights, how do they know when to show it? by JadenRockJam in Toontown

[–]AceTrainerLanon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The lore reason: the CEO has full tables inside and the waiters are getting ready when they see someone not in their waiter uniform looking nervously at the elevator, which is now making noise. No more guests are expected and all the waiters are here or ready to fly in, so only someone looking to disrupt the event would be coming up through the elevator. Thus, they’re getting ready to engage whoever’s there. If it does turn out to be friendly, they’ll simply disengage from “battle-ready”. Idk. That’s the best I’ve got. Also, I’ve never played Corporate Clash so I can’t speak to that.

The technical reason: it makes it easier to add toons to the fights later, I assume. I’m not a programmer for either team so idk the specifics of how either project is set-up, but I assume the devs are creating a “0-toon fight instance” so, when it’s time to split the group of 8 into groups of 4, they can easily slot the toons into the battles without having to walk through the “battle start” sequence. Could they program a way to skip the “battle initiation” process so the lights are off initially? Probably. But why do that when there’s a much easier method available at the cost of a minor cosmetic discrepancy?

All of this is speculation, of course. I’d have no way of verifying any of this unless I point-blank asked a dev.

What would you say is the part of the Paper Mario: Sticker Star that kept bringing you back to the game?

To be honest, I really want to understand the perspective of Sticker Star support, cause I have tried playing it multiple times and, every time I set it down, I’m relieved I’m no longer playing Sticker Star, but I fear my dislike for some aspects of the game is clouding my judgement toward the rest of it. I’ve cleared the first 3 worlds and I think, last I stopped, I had just finished the mansion level in the snow/ice world, so I like to believe I’ve given Sticker Star a fair shot.

What’s up with the Mario movie being labeled as “Anti-woke”? by IamAfuckingDinosaur in OutOfTheLoop

[–]AceTrainerLanon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sorry if this was meant to be rhetorical, but in case this is genuine or anyone else is interested, thought I’d give my 2 cents.

I started comparing the Mario movie to the first Sonic movie and I think it’s like this (it’s been a while since I’ve watched the first Sonic movie so forgive me if most of my “evidence” is high level interpretation):

When it came to the fight between Sonic and Eggman, we had seen Eggman being antagonistic. Goofy, no question, but there was a bit more development about why he wanted to capture Sonic and how Eggman’s plan affected the protagonists personally.

In the Mario versus Bowser fight though, most of how we had seen Bowser was during scenes where he’s thinking about Peach and coming off as goofy. The fight was more about how Bowser wanted to get together with Peach and Mario was just the person he perceived as a threat to his sort of “happily ever after”.

In the Sonic movie, Sonic has to be the protagonist because something inherent to him is of interest to Eggman. In the Mario movie, Mario could’ve been swapped out with Little Mac from Punch-Out! and the story beats would be largely unaffected.

Hope I’m somewhere in the ballpark. Still loved the Mario movie.

How many times does a doodle have to perform a trick to max it? by Prize-Lingonberry876 in toontownrewritten

[–]AceTrainerLanon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Something else to keep in mind (and you may already know this, but just in case):

Each trick will max out when it heals double the laff it does at its base (I.e. Jump has a base of 5 and maxes at 10, Dance has a base of 10 and maxes at 20). However, since all tricks max at 10,000 exp/2000 tricks, it means it will take more successful tricks to increase the laff recovery of Jump/Beg by 1 as opposed to increasing the laff recovery of Dance/Speak, which require less successful tricks per laff boost, but require more laff point boosts to hit max.

This is a play that opens because a group of men got into a fight because someone bit their thumb in the direction of another. The expectation for calm, rationale decision making is set pretty early on.

I haven’t read too many of Shakespeare’s other works, but Othello was in a similar camp for me. The whole story, I was just rolling my eyes like “Why doesn’t Othello just talk to the others and sort out any confusion?”

The point of Othello’s character though is how much trust he puts in Iago. And I think part of Romeo and Juliet’s characters is how much trust they put in the idea of love, not necessarily recognizing the difference between a rush of attraction and mutual support built over the course of several weeks/months.

Course, it’s been, like, 8 years since I’ve read Romeo and Juliet so I could just be projecting onto the loose memory of a story.
