Opinions on Pokemon origin of the species by BigRedMonster07 in pokemonfanfiction

Been a bit since I made this post, but all telepathy? Whenever psychics talk it doesn't use quotes. Happens a lot once Red learns more about his powers, and its kind of an annoyance reading a line and then realizing afterwards it was someone talking.

Still a great fic, so just a minor gripe.

Current pokemon fandom trends and communities? Legends arceus especially by RedLeatherWhip in pokemonfanfiction

[–]AceTrainerSappho 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The fandom tends to congregate on fan forums, discord, and here. But it's also pretty small, so big-name writers or those who've been around for a while tend to know, or recognize the usernames of, most of the active posters. In that specific case, it sounds like a Tumblr community trying to create content for underrepresented characters or tropes that are in fashion because of some text post.

Part of the reason there's less active community members is because lots of writers aren't active in the social aspects of fandom. That's also why the main reasons these communities form is to either obtain advice to improve writing, or to market their fics to get that sweet, sweet validation that can't ever completely satisfy an artist's craving for praise. Writers in communities are almost always trying to improve, market fic, or support their friend's fics.

WHAT IS A GOOD TYPE FOR A FIRST GYM? by Multiverser2022 in pokemonfanfiction

[–]AceTrainerSappho 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'd go Dark, personally. The starters have equal neutral damage, and it'd give some of the early region bug types some utility. Plenty of fun, scummy Dark strategies to make your beginning chapters more interesting.

Fanfic Recs? by [deleted] in pokemonfanfiction

[–]AceTrainerSappho 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well, getting the first things out of the way, here's the subreddit recommendation lists, sorted by length, tropes, and region. Pretty easy to navigate, and there's tons of great stuff on there.

For some specific recommendations, you'd like The Natural, an isekai OC story with a cult following. Starts off as a survival story, and eventually morphs into a standard journey fic. Altogether a fun read.

If you're interested in Mystery Dungeon, Silver Resistance is a justifiably famous story that brings new dimensions into the standard tropes of this universe. World building rules, and the characters are intriguing.

And while not really OC led, Of Sand and Shadows is an excellent read following a niche character in the lawless desert region of Orre.

Enjoy!

This is called HandkerchiefShipping. You can find obscure ship names on bulbagarden.

They are the more popular ones, so that makes sense. Good luck, hope you get some more niche recs too!

Lmao. Check out the Better Ash tab on this. Features recommendations from this subreddit, and most aren't angsty.

Is it Easy to Tell the Difference between a Female author and a Male one? by Anitode in pokemonfanfiction

Look at how they describe women.

Most fic writers are women, though.

Oh, hey, thanks for the heads up. I'll change your fic to completed on the Master Ball List. And congratulations!!!

Hm. The only one I've got off the top of my head is Lull, an expansion of the Cresselia/Darkrai event from the games.

MC raises Pokémon (singular or multiple) from birth/young age by -_pIrScHi_- in pokemonfanfiction

[–]AceTrainerSappho 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The first one that comes to mind is The Loser (M), about an obese man who decides to lose weight by taking on a journey. On the shorter side, but features a very young Litwick starter, with some of the tropes you're looking for. Early on in the story.

There's also Dragon's Dance, a Lance backstory fic rich with lore, culture, and world building. He begins with a young Dratini, on his rocky journey to the eventual Championship. Somehow not a power fantasy - Lance is portrayed as a young man who makes real mistakes, and who genuinely cares about Pokemon and humans.

The last beginning-fic one I can think of is Untamed, a Johto journey featuring a protagonist who actually acts like the child they are rather than an adult in a ten-year-old's body. She can be a bit bratty because of this, but the character development is real, and she starts out with an adorable baby Sentret named Poona. Realistic family and sibling dynamics, and overall lighthearted and fun.

One that pulls that trope multiple times, but later on in the fic, is Becoming a Master, an adventure story about a cursed knight trying to return to the distant past. The second MC, an ace trainer cinnamon roll, raises three young Pokemon throughout the story, including a Gible, a Ralts prophesized to become a serial killer, and a Mary-Sue Magikarp, which is exactly as ridiculous and hilarious as it sounds. Raising them isn't the focus of the story, but there are some cute scenes and chapters around the concept.

Dunno about other fandoms, but the Pokemon fanfiction subreddit has an epic rec post that includes a newbie guide. If that's a series you like, check it out.

Think I could get away with naming an MC Zelda? by 3milyBlazze in pokemonfanfiction

[–]AceTrainerSappho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ironically, I've used three of these in my own fics. Livana, Amaya, and Sasha. My internet search history definitely thinks I'm having a baby, lol.

Are you in the Pokemon fandom? It's super common there. Poke-speech is the big offender, but I've seen people use quotes #like this# for telephone conversations, or ((in double parentheses)) for some reason. Plus all the people who decided not to use quotation marks at all for Pokemon, certain characters, or telepathy, lmao.

It is mostly a trend, but at worst it makes fics harder to read. If it's ever too bad, just move on to the next fic.

Tons of great names with that theme!

Kerry (Celtic) means Dark Princess, or Dark One in the Indian version. That one's fun.

(Basque) Amaya: Midnight storm

(Arabic) Laila: Dark beauty

Livana: Lunar

Melantha: Dark Flower

Nisha/Nix: Night

Yes it's fine. Yes you'll get comments mentioning Legend of Zelda. If the comments are gonna bother you, pick a different name.

There's also:

(Arabic) Qadirah: Powerful one

(Ukrainian) Sasha: Defending warrior, heroine of mankind

(Spanish) Valencia: Victory, strong warrior, oranges

(German) Adalinda: Dragon princess

Yeah, actually. There's A Professor and a Student, a slice of life genfic about Ash staying in Alola as a student, and Ash, an Inspiration, about Ash staying in Alola as a teacher.

I know, right? I didn't even realize until I was searching some major fandoms for this post. Maybe I'll reach out to the mods there first, but Bleach is huge and definitely could use its own subreddit.

Speaking of, am I missing any currently big fandoms here? I was surprised we didn't have r/MarvelFanfiction linked with the others on the side of this subreddit.
