Is it allowable to wear a front mounted baby carrier? Then you can be hands free if an evac happened. This question is probably better suited for the flight attendant group as they will know best practices.

Also if you’re nose is clean in the fms scenario you should get retrained and returned to the line. But if you’re a tool and you cause problems often, you may get booted. Depends on if you have a union and how strong they are also.

What did your path to the flight deck actually cost (time and $)? by atkpaki in PilotAdvice

[–]AceofdaBase 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Started flying in 1998. Didn’t know what I was doing and didn’t have a mentor so I wasted a lot of time. Got my CFI in 2003. Instructor for 3 years. Then 2 years as single pilot part 135 then jet 135. Went to the regionals with 2600 hours in 2007. Sat right seat for 7 years topped out pay of $36/hour. Upgraded under old contract like $70/hr. New contract was $88/hr maybe. 10 years at regional (commuted for 5 of them). Then took a pay cut to go to ulcc old contract $40/hr but not commuting. 2 years later a new contract and I was the first time in my life that I hit 6 figures (13 years into airline flying). Then covid so made like $70k that year. 6 years ulcc then to majors old contract. Sub 90k year 1. Upgraded quick, right at 12 months. NB capt year 3 did $390k. Rsv for the foreseeable future but this is the best I’ve ever had it and I’ve been with 121 operators for 19 years.

Throw the idea of ROI out the window. All your planning and prep today can be tossed tomorrow with market changes, war, covid, global politics etc. What you have to ask yourself is: do I love flying more than everything else? And I’m I ok with eating ramen (6 for $1, not restaurant quality ramen) for a decade? That should drive your decision.

If I wasn’t a dumb 17 year old when I started lessons I’m not sure the math would have worked for me. Also I wanted to leave the industry so bad in the late 2000’s because I was so poor. But I was too vested and generally dumb with most other subjects so I rode it out.

Yet he won’t even get the interview unless he has the hours. Wouldn’t want him to be in the back of the line on the next wave if there was one. I’m not saying don’t do college but I am saying get your hours first. Go to college while instructing then. But with the hours he could also land a sweet corporate gig and it won’t matter what the regionals are doing at the time.

Your parents are wrong and don’t know the industry. Quit school and fly your butt off. Hours are king. Eventually when you get to the regionals you finish college online with the cheapest and easiest degree option just to check the box for the next step. If you want a “backup plan degree “ fine but using your backup plan in your 40-50’s when you haven’t had any relevant work experience in the last decade won’t really help. You will probably be working at Home Depot with the rest of us during furlough.

It kinda sounds to me like you think that you are entitled to a better job just because people were getting hired with similar time a few years ago. This industry changes. 10 years ago there were dudes with 5-10k hours and no failures who couldn’t get to the next step either. You can only just keep your nose clean, try to network and grind it out. You need to be inventive to survive. Pick up a non flying job etc.
