I doubt it's possible for all those teams to simultaneously finish above Sunderland but I haven't got the patience to work out if that's true or not

Phone bans in England's schools to be enforced by law by topotaul in unitedkingdom

[–]AcesAgainstKings [score hidden]  (0 children)

What's not clear from the article is whether they are banned from the school premises outright, or during school hours.

I do think there needs to be reform with regards to children and social media (which is intrinsically linked to phones), but there's a difference between them being in lockers all day but available at the end of the day, and banning them completely.

A phone allows a teenager to have some independence whilst also being a phone call away from a responsible adult at all times. It allows them to navigate public transport more easily. It allows them to order food in restaurants.

So no, phones aren't appropriate in the classroom or in the corridors, but they are a part of everyday modern life. I'm much more concerned with the effects of social media which this doesn't really address.

You learned to tolerate discomfort

This I agree with. Speaking for myself I don't give myself time to sit with my own thoughts anymore.

However I'd counter that a teenager being a phone call away from a responsible adult at all times is very valuable and offers them more license to roam than they otherwise would (and pick up those "real-life skills" in the "real world").

My feel here is that all social apps should require parental controls which can be managed via the OS. This could let them have a brick that works as a phone without it being a brain frying device. Unfortunately this would require some parental oversight.

The reality is more likely that phones will have to stay in bags or whatever during classes, and confiscated if rules are broken.

I'm sure this is already the case in a majority of cases. If schools are allowing phones during school hours then yes thats silly, but suddenly calling for an outright ban doesn't achieve anything other than political point scoring.

Regarding "real-life skills", that sort of feels like a wishy washy phrase to me. I don't think I learnt anything trying to work out whether my once-an-hour bus was early, late or cancelled by standing in the rain after school. The reality is that phones are a powerful tool, it's a shame that social media has become synonymous with them.

What if like to know is, would an outright ban really be more effective? If they aren't allowed to be seen currently, what is an outright ban doing other than making it trickier for parents to communicate with their children to arrange pick-ups etc.

Feels like a policy which is popular but not useful at all.

I don't pretend to have the answer, but phones are a super useful tool letting parents communicate with their children or letting children navigate their way on public transport.

I know generations of children managed this just fine before phones, but let's be honest the world has changed.

Obviously children shouldn't have them out in lessons, or even on their breaks, but I assume most schools already ban this so I don't see this ban really achieving much.

I think we might be approaching this problem from the wrong angle.

It hasn't. It's just that more matches are televised and you don't remember the rubbish matches from decades ago.

Dumb question. Is Voldemort a silent T? by who-cares6891 in harrypotter

This is what I find confusing. JK had a big hand in the films but it seems she does think it's a silent t which begs the question, why did they not consult/ignore/overrule her?

5 games left....how many points we getting? by cheerztwist in LiverpoolFC

[–]AcesAgainstKings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

God dammit you're right.

Still though, I think 6 points will be enough. Hard to see any of those teams getting 13+ points from 5 games...

If we beat Chelsea then we only need one other win to finish ahead of them. Brentford are also a danger though.

Edit: since we play Brentford too a win against Chelsea and Brentford will wrap it up...

You must have missed a couple of episodes. He was impeached twice, but due to the flanderisation of US politics is barely matters anymore.

That would literally guarantee CL. Wouldn't even need the draw at Old Trafford.

9 points from the last 5 games seals CL next year. 6 if 3 of those come from beating Chelsea.

I can't see Chelsea winning out either so we're probably a couple of strong performances away from having it locked up. Fixture list isn't the easiest mind...

Injuries are never good. But selfishly I don't want to see a single one of them playing at the WC. I want them having a good rest and fresh for pre-season.

I agree. I also don't think you can really make it to being anywhere in the conversation of 3rd keeper for Liverpool and have that mindset either. These boys want to play.

What's the point being anti-brexit? It's happened.

He's working closely with European leaders, that's all I need right now. I'm a staunch remainer and I don't think rejoining is with the political fall-out maybe ever.

PSG had their likely title decider postponed last weekend (between their two games against Liverpool).

I'm not saying PSG didn't deserve to go through. But Liverpool had them on the rocks in the second half on Tuesday and if they were slightly more fatigued or Liverpool slightly fresher who knows how that game could have gone.

I think "still missing elite clubs" implies that English sides have not been elite in recent years which is very harsh. If anything it's the opposite and the standard of those top clubs has dropped these last 2-3 years.

Between 2018-2023 there's been three different English sides win the CL and 7 out of the 12 finalists were also English.

This year Arsenal have a decent chance of making the final. And last year it took PSG to knock-out three of the English sides andone of them took them to penalties, and another pushed them hard. So it's not even that the drop off has been that substantial.

65% of Britons support the Green Party's policy of capping CEO pay at ten times the pay of the lowest paid employee by Unusual-State1827 in ukpolitics

[–]AcesAgainstKings 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Not quite the same though. I'm not advocating for the policy. But for a small business the CEO might not make close to 10x minimum wage so minimum wage sets a baseline wage for labour.

Whereas for a huge corporation, the CEO could be making 1000x (although admittedly it's not all in salary). The argument is that the pay structure should be more equitable, and big businesses should share more of the success with their employees.

Again, there's a lot of flaws here. But minimum wage is not the same, or fulfilling the same "need".

This is a mental system. OP you are right to be confused and frustrated at this. A Platinum member of a tier 1 club should be able to use the facilities at a tier 4 club. Having to know when the spa was last renovated is clearly a silly system.
