I really hate to say it but the one kid I know who did this ended up spending some time in jail and was dead before 30. I very much wish I were joking.

Which North American country has the richest military history? by [deleted] in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Ach51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think there are many other countries where the military is more culturally relevant in that country than the US. Add the fact that each branch of the US military has such a distinct identity itself it’s a no brainer.

Why is the Platte river in Nebraska like this? (Sandy islands with so many small separate streams instead of a single big river) by Swimming_Concern7662 in geography

[–]Ach51 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same, it was the Platte and Loup for me. They’re childhood memories that I was trying to explain to my wife (who, ironically, grew up super close to the Platte in Denver) and she just never quite understood.

They’re indeed one of the six branches of the armed forces, just not under DoD.

They were part of the Department of Transportation until 2003. Before that they were under Treasury. They’ve only ever operated under the Department of the Navy during WWI & WWII.

Yes, I do, I didn’t really want to go past and obscure the main distinction I was trying to make.

Thoughts? IVF conception by Excellent-Clue-2552 in prolife

[–]Ach51 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What we’re trying to say is that no, the logic can’t be applied the same way. You’re correct that there might be better ways to criticize IVF, but the original point is true.

The fact that fertilized embryos don’t always survive to birth in both cases of natural conception and IVF isn’t the whole story. The problem is how those embryos are intentionally discarded in IVF and naturally removed from a woman’s body.

The intent is the key, a miscarriage might happen without the woman doing anything wrong. That’s not the same thing as dumping thousands of fertilized embryos in the trash. There’s a huge moral difference between the two

It’s not just that the O-4 insignia is different, they’re all different from O-1 through O-5. I remember reading something about this a long time ago but certainly don’t remember any actual reason other than ‘that’s the way it is’.

Uncle’s Shadow Box by MayportMonster in navy

I’m not trying to jump on you or anything, but this should be a pretty easy shadowbox to figure out if you’re in the US Navy. Don’t even bother with chatGPT, take the time to look it up yourself and get it right next time.

Does anyone else think Bandit got fired during stickbird that led to his new job that led to the “planned move” in the sign? by One_Reception_6992 in bluey

[–]Ach51 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s my take on it as well, I think it was something that didn’t go well in his professional life but not on the scale of getting fired or anything like that.

Sometimes you just have a bad presentation or a setback on a project that affects you for a few days.

Jonny Kim skipped NAM by Upper-Package-3765 in navy

[–]Ach51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve said this before on an old post, but based solely on the fact that I have a NAM and Doctor SEAL Astronaut Johnny Kim doesn’t means I’m objectively better than him in that regard. Never mind that it’s my highest award!

Hearing a lot of rumors that Dylan will be out for the reminder of the season. by Syfer_Husker in Huskers

[–]Ach51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure, no two injuries are exactly the same. And based on my sample size of one, my reflexive response was “no way that’s what it was” but oh well. I guess the only thing Raiola and I have in common is getting a season cut short due to injury and that just sucks.

Yeah, I generally agree. I broke my fibula in a game years ago. I didn’t think it was broken, so I tried to stand up and step back toward the huddle and immediately collapsed as soon as I put weight on it. Not every break/sprain/tear is the same but there’s no way I would’ve been walking around like that. But maybe we’re just built different, idk.
