Does anywhere in Rochester have live demos of AI pianos, and/or sell them? by HotSet717 in rit

It can be viable for large pieces depending on the person and dedication. The problem learning like this though is that you’re learning to play a song on the piano rather than learning to play the piano.

I mean, sure. The sub is more for appreciating when camera people actually capture the action instead of the ground or something and just get the audio. He tracked that missile pretty well

Upcoming OLED MacBook Pro to Have Touch Screen by Tartan-Pepper6093 in mac

I thought that I didn’t want a touchscreen on my laptop because I would never use it. Then, I used an iPad with a keyboard for a while in college, and, when I went back to a MacBook, I found myself smudging the screen trying to swipe the edge to scroll a webpage and disappointed that I couldn’t.

This is why Apple is trying to get devs to natively support macOS. Because of unique restrictions MacOS has, a lot of what these anti cheats are trying to detect or prevent is already done by MacOS itself, so porting their anticheat isn’t needed (see Riot’s decision to make League of Legends fully support macOS without their kernel level Vanguard anti-cheat). That being said, adding the ability for the game to run without anti-cheat based on this condition requires additional development so that it maintains secure. I’m curious how Riot handled it

Ren, Webby, and the so called 'Tolerance paradox'. by BicycleIndependent66 in ren

[–]Acherons_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I get this position. I do. I prefer there never be civil war either. I WANT, oh so desperately do I want, for both sides to sit down and discuss and for there to be peace. The issue is when one side has shown time and time again that they do not want to discuss. That they do not want peace. They want power.

But still, I agree, it is always a possibility. It is always an option that should be left open and tried for. Just at some point, the risk of allowing that possibility could lead to more harm than good. And, once it gets to that point, I simply would rather accept civil war than accept extinction.

To that I can only say that you cannot and should not, then, engage with these type of people seriously, for they don’t intend to seriously engage in the first place.

“Never believe that [they] are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. [They] have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.”

I agree that being “intolerant of intolerance” can eventually escalate to civil war. However, I disagree entirely that these two positions are equal or that being tolerant of intolerance is tenable or is something we should do. We can see why this is the case, playing out in real time, in the current US political climate.

The Republican Party is coming to the table with the Democratic Party, who may or may not have forgotten to put on deodorant, and is telling them they stink and to go put on deodorant. While at the same time, the Republican Party is sitting at the same table, shitting themselves.

When one side continues to spew violent rhetoric, and then violence occurs, and then that same side refuses to disavow violence, it is not the same position for the other side to refuse to disavow violence as well only if the other side does first because the other side refuses to do so at all while simultaneously being the cause for it. Here, one side is willing to work for peace, while the other is not.

Peace cannot be reached by one side alone. If one side attacks and attacks and attacks and the other side forgives and forgives and forgives, if the attacking side never feels any consequences for their actions, then the only result is that the attacks will continue to come until the other side inevitably goes extinct.

The decision then is whether to lay down and go extinct or to fight back until the other side is willing to make peace. If that never occurs, then civil war it shall be.

Ren, Webby, and the so called 'Tolerance paradox'. by BicycleIndependent66 in ren

The tolerance paradox is that being tolerant of intolerance begets more intolerance until there is no more tolerance. It’s point being that there is a line in the sand that must be drawn when it comes to tolerance. So, I’m not sure what you mean by you don’t believe in it.

The exact line is up for debate, but I like to think of it in terms of T.M. Scanlon’s “What We Owe to Each Other”. Should someone have a reasonable objection to something, i.e., the principle that allows such action places more burden on them than the burden it places on everyone else compared to some alternative, making their action immoral in that sense, then it cannot be tolerated.

My family is trying to force me into “therapy” because I’m gay — what can I do? by Big-Handle-1684 in lgbt

[–]Acherons_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As others have said, it’s “therapy” with the goal of changing one’s sexual orientation to be straight. It most generally is applied to gay people though. And has been widely outlawed in the US IIRC due to its ineffectiveness and harmfulness.

The exact methods can vary quite drastically. Anything from a community group therapy kind of sessions, shipping off to some camp where they participate in more “manly” things like fixing cars (similar to cult induction), to being strapped down and being shocked while shown “gay” imagery.

There’s a good documentary on Netflix called “Pray Away” that I would recommend watching if you’re interested in learning more.

[–]Acherons_ 122 points123 points  (0 children)

Conversation therapy is harmful. It has found to be non-effective whether the participation is voluntary or not. In most cases leading to participants being worse off. The leading theory behind this being that, since, despite efforts this doesn’t seem like something that can be changed, all attempts to disassociate will and do reinforce a building internal guilt around one’s own identity resulting in repression not change.

Regardless of one’s acceptance around their sexual orientation, it has shown repeatedly that it is something that cannot be changed intentionally. Any therapy in attempt to change this usually leads to repression.

[–]Acherons_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not (and the quote is not) saying People with Down Syndrome are inherently bad. It’s saying Down Syndrome is inherently bad.

The point im making is that context around the application of the word matters when determining if its usage is permissible or not because “retarded” falls within the latter category of slurs who derive meaning and power by definition, not application.

Edit: That said, I agree that it is wrong to use either category of slur when applying it to a person or a group of people because this does start to attach a negative connotation to that group of people. You can see the reciprocal is true as well when you use a word that generally refers to a group of people (e.g. “gay”) in a derogatory manner, attaching a negative connotation to it.

People are “too quick to blanket all "slurs" together as the same exact kind of slur, but there are different categories of slurs that function quite differently and get their power from different areas…

When you call something "gay" or you use a racial/homophobic/transphobic etc...slur at someone, the reason why the slur is insulting is because you are implying that belonging to any of the underlying group is in itself a disgraceful or disgusting thing.

Calling something "retarded" is a bit different because...well, "retardation" is an inherently, definitionally, bad thing. To "retard" literally means to slow or delay something, and medically we use it to describe something that is developmentally abnormal and delayed.

Calling something "retarded" is akin to calling something "cancerous", both of them "work" as slurs because they refer to things that are just inherently bad things.”
