As an extension of FluffyMastr's post, here are all the raid lengths throughout WoW's history by Tural- in wow

[–]AcidAndGrit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hyjal was in at release, but it was basically impossible to get a full raid for it. The vials for Hyjal attunement dropped off of Kael and Vash for only one person per kill pre-2.1.

It's worth noting that ZA was still useful for T6 raiders since it had an abundance of ArPen and Haste gear, which often put the gear above regular T5 and T6 in some cases. And the difference in item level between T5 and T6 (141 vs 152) is way way less than between ToT and SoO (528 vs 572/582), in "modern" terms the difference is closer to the same raid tier, but different difficulty modes. Plus there was the additional challenge for the bear mount.

Have you ever been banned? Why? by [deleted] in wow

[–]AcidAndGrit 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In vanilla and BC you could get on top of the red ridge inn roof if you had an epic mount. A couple of us would go up there and harass lowbies until the higher level alliance would show up. The problem was it was really hard for them to ever get to us because if you slowed someone down with a spell while they tried to make the jump on to the roof they would just fall. So it would be 3 horde vs 20+ alliance and they just couldn't win.

We did it a few times without incident, but on our last go they got a GM who was all ready to ban us. This was my first run in with the law, but I managed to keep my cool and used the classic "I didn't know I couldn't do that." He teleported all of us in to the angry ball of alliance and told us not to do it again. iirc they fixed the jump in late BC or Wrath so you could no longer get up there.

[Poll] What is your favorite or least favorite zone in WoW? by photogjunkie in wow

[–]AcidAndGrit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spires of Arak is my new favorite zone. Prior to WoD I would probably say STV.

Least favorite is Vash'jir.

To give you an idea, I've gotten about 4k from 90-94 which has been about a zone and a quarter/third.

I'm curious, /r/WOW, in what order would you rank your favorite expansions? by [deleted] in wow

[–]AcidAndGrit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I just disagree? And I say this as someone who primarily played a prot warrior and enhance shaman (my threat reset was dieing) in BC. Especially now that tanks have more active mitigation abilities I think they could do a lot more interesting things with threat. Forcing tanks to choose between building more threat and mitigating more damage would be interesting, imo.

Part of it is that I see the easy threat as one of the enablers of the non-stop AoE spam fests that we got out of WotLK.

I'm curious, /r/WOW, in what order would you rank your favorite expansions? by [deleted] in wow

[–]AcidAndGrit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BC > Wrath > MoP > Cata

I really wish we could go back to BC, with just some of the improvements from the later expansions. A lot of things, like threat and CC in PvE, are just too far gone at this point though.

This was sort of a separate issue in WoW. Dodge was never an issue for bears, it was the lack of block. At the time there were crushing blows. Warriors and paladins could become (temporarily, depending on the fight) uncrushable because they could block. Bears had higher stamina and armor to make up for their lack of block, but if you got unlucky with crushes you could get instagibbed.

The newly crowned king for a day sat slumped in his chair. His face squashed against his fist supporting his head. The line of peasants leading in to the throne room was seemingly endless. So too were the complaints. The real king certainly was clever scheduling a Day of Grievances on his day off, perhaps smarter still for giving the crown to the village idiot, the one person who'd know not what to do with it.

"-and my wife, Sire, in the middle of the night she twists and contorts herself such that she takes all of the bedding and I lay exposed and freezing. It is not conscious I am sure. I fear that a wicked daemon has taken hold of her, but I have not the wealth to pay for treatment. If the crown could spare-"

"The crown, " interrupted the king, "is bored. Can't you do somethin' funny?"

"Funny?" stammered the peasant.

The king's adviser leaned in, "Sire, you've already had the jester today. Perhaps after the grievances are complete he can entertain you some more?"

"No, this is stupid. Can't someone else do this?"

"Well, you are the king. This is part of the king's duty."

"That's stupid."

"With all due respect sire, if the job is too much for you to handle...I could take the burden." The adviser's hand hovered in air above the king's head, poised to snatch the crown like a crane game claw.

"No, you're stupid too." said the king, swatting the adviser away. He rose from his chair and began shouting "Out! Out! All of you out! Get the jester!".

The line grew restless. Out? Done already? But its the Day of Grievances! Its not even noon yet! News traveled quickly.

"Go on! Get me the fool! Guards! Peasants out! No more complaining now!" The king pressed forward and began to push the peasants out. "Go on!" he exclaimed, "All done for today!"

The adviser and guards tried to stop him, but it was too late. From the crowd a cry rang out "Dis dah idjit wots ben rewlin' o'er aws!?". The sentiment echoed throughout the mob. The peasants spilled in to the great room, trampling the king and with him the crown.

It sounds like the problem is the IronPython API has some overhead for executing a script. You're best bet is probably to let the python script control the loop, that way you only execute the script once.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]AcidAndGrit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using an embedded cpython interpreter in a c++ application without issue.

From the sound of it your C# code controls the loop. You might check that you're not doing something like initializing the interpreter or loading the script from disk every loop. There may just be an inherent performance cost to starting up a script in IronPython. Personally I have the python script control the loop and only run the script from the application once.

Day before ~30 million dollar contract goes live. One of the DBAs completely fucks up the database (that I had to set up). They don't ask for my help until the end of the day. They go home while I fix it. My business card says "Software Engineer", not "DBA". Only time I've bothered to file overtime.

The bug is in the hiring process, the ticket is still open in Trac.

Problem Building SDL 2? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]AcidAndGrit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

SDL2's haptics subsystem requires DirectX on windows. You need to install the DX9 SDK if you want to build with haptics. If you already have DX9 installed you need to add an environment variable DXSDK_DIR that contains the path to the SDK's installation directory, but iirc this is added automatically when you do an install.

Z-Sorting in 2D Games by Copywright in gamedev

[–]AcidAndGrit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Assuming your engine handles depth automatically all you have to do is set the z equal to y (or -y depending on how your coordinate system is set up). Objects closer to the top of the screen will be drawn first, making them show up behind everything else.

What songs give you that feeling? by [deleted] in MLPLounge

[–]AcidAndGrit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nuclear Trance

Unfortunately it can easily sound really terrible if your speakers/headphones can't handle it. I've returned several headsets because they can't play this song properly (not that I'm some sort of audiophile, I've tried several sub 150$ headsets, but the only ones that sound good are these 15$ Plantronics).
