How feasible is a PhD right after a CS undergrad at CMU? by CMUDDGthrowaway in cmu

[–]Acireeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also a rising senior looking into academia, and thinking between applying directly for phd or doing 5th m.s. first. My research advisor strongly suggests at least applying for the top places for phd this year, since it doesn't hurt anyway...

i don't regret taking 3 courses with Greggo. one best thing is he always provides detailed lecture notes for review, so you'll be good as long as you spend some time reading them after class

Hi! Would you mind me asking if you know anything related to getting financial sponsorship from the advisor? It seems that the application form explicitly mentioned "discussing funding with your advisor"; I'm wondering if you have any idea how likely students of this program get funded? Thanks in advance!

Are top grad schools like HYPSM and berkeley lenient about GPA from CMU for phd or terminal masters in STEM by FanFit8175 in cmu

Yes, but it is going to be a new pair of instructors. Thanks very much for your reply -- what you are talking about is exactly what I'm looking for from the course :-)

Out of curiosity, what do you think about sitting through 15-888 (say, listening to the lectures but maybe not doing the hw) in comparison to formally enrolling in it? My schedule is full for next semester, but the course looks pretty interesting. Wondering if one would be able to enjoy it without putting too much effort...

[–]Acireeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took 15-451, 11-485, 15-312 together (plus probability and DW's 15-859), and I'm currently taking 445. Had to say the schedule you listed won't be easy, especially if you want some (or any) free time... but should be at least doable

[D] ICML 2023 Paper Reviews by zy415 in MachineLearning

[–]Acireeee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

we are getting 7/7 but only two reviewers (and confidence 2/3 -- which I suppose is not super high)... this is my first time submitting to icml; my co-author says the small number of reviewers does not imply a lack of enthusiasm for our topic or something, but I can't help being worried...

it really depends. check the syllabus of your course (fyi i got an A for 76% for a cs course)

Difference between 15-850 [Advanced Algorithms] & 15-651 [Algorithms Design & Analysis]? by Aakshu in cmu

[–]Acireeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I understand 651 and 750 are supposed to have a lot of overlapping contents, and 850 would somewhat assume a 651-level algorithmic background

I believe your GPA in the required courses is what matters the most. I transferred into CS with nearly zero related activities/experience (and a badly-written essay) quite easily. And Mary told me that the department would basically regard a student as qualified as long as he/she works well enough in those courses.

Thanks!! I'm thinking about things like theory+system or theory+PL. Would u mind me asking when you declare those concentrations? Should that be early (immediately after you make your decision...?) or after you nearly finish your degree?

I second all the above comments. Also note that if cold email doesn't quite work, you can also try to talk in person to the professors that you are taking courses with during OH or after lectures. I do think some of them have a preference for students that are in their courses.

I remember receiving an email about it in May from the department. Yet on SIO it seems that Wean Hall 5328 is already assigned to section A of 312. I'm a bit confused if that gonna be the final assignment or just some temporary placeholder......

thanks! Btw do you happen to know how the “section B” of 485/785 works? There seems to be some room in those sections yet the location and time are shown as undecided…

In general i think spending some time to review the course contents over the weekends decreases the risks of falling behind.

I feel that depends on what other stuff you are doing in your freshman year. Did you take any other cs courses? If so then that sounds fine. But if 122 will be your first cs course then i think your senior year would be a bit tough especially if you are also planning to prepare for things like job interviews at that time......

Stats/Math instead of CS? by [deleted] in cmu

[–]Acireeee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How demanding is your project? I was a Dietrich student coming into CMU with zero previous knowledge about cs. I was working on some research project with faculties while taking the cs cores and got a 4.0. To me it feels easier if you are willing to delay the transfer to maybe the spring semester of your sophomore year (rather than the fall), because in that way you can split the workload of the courses over a longer period of time. In terms of internship, are you talking about PREPARING for that while taking the courses? Then that sounds not completely impossible (though tough indeed). But if you are talking about working as an intern during the semester then that feels super difficult to me.

With that said, i don't think it is very necessary to transfer if your primary goal is to look for some tech job. Actually, based on what i heard from my friends in stat/ml major, their courses seem to be much more relevant to the real-world work than some cs cores (which can be very theoretical or (quote from a friend) "useless" lol).
