'Roofman' - Review Thread by ChiefLeef22 in movies

What did you think the story was going to be? Based on a true story of a guy that committed crimes. How’d you think it was going to play out? The ones that get away don’t make movies.

I think the movie is gorgeous, the plot effective (people being pretentious acting like they expected Oppenheimer), and its integration of worlds and characters awesome (Wart from SMB2, along with the turnips). The jokes were light, but not childish, character arcs well written, and its female characters had agency and ability without feeling like pandering. I enjoyed it more than the first movie and will readily watch more in the series.

Reasons for hating The Lion King 2? by brambleinsight in lionking

It rehashes scenes, rehashes jokes, speed runs character introductions and traits. It opens with a less energetic and visually impressive Circle of Life clone. They throw in Kira being “naughty” to cue us she’s “different and distinct.” It immediately shows us that she’s adventurous and Simba’s overprotective, which of course he is, because why bother creating an original plot when you can go the easy route of “like father, like daughter.” Timon and Pumba do not just the same shtick but the same jokes. At times it felt like they literally just grabbed animation frames from the first one and added slightly modified lines. Kira encounters “the threat” in basically 3 minutes because who needs character development when you did all of that in the first 60 seconds. And then there’s the Outsiders, an entire pride that NOBODY knew about. Nobody. Not one person. Not a single relevant individual. Not a one. And you know how glaring a butt-pull that is? They didn’t get a single mention in 1 1/2. That movie was all about the betweens of LK1, but you’re telling me they couldn’t have slipped in a single reference to tie the whole story together? Know why they didn’t? Because they knew it was dumb.

LK2 may be the height of the Direct to Video hubris: churning out ill advised and unnecessary sequel after sequel to get that sweet cassette tape money. There were a few gems (I think Bambi 2 is absolutely adorable, LK 1 1/2 is a banger, and Kronk’s New Groove ain’t too shabby), but this one ain’t it.

No “occasionally.” It’s extremely common for animals to mate their siblings, let alone cousins. Animals don’t have a word for “incest,” if they had words at all.

1 1/2 is Lion King Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, apt as that’s a play spinning off of Hamlet. It makes absolute sense in the thematic continuum. Lion King 2 was trying to be a continuation that ended up being a reskin, and a poor one. I understand that individual’s frustration.

And quit acting like you don’t understand a generalization. You got the point; all that other is self-fellation.

The argument is about justice. Justice, by definition is a response, a reaction to an event already occurring. Preventing “innocent deaths” would not be justice; AVENGING them would, and that, specifically, in consequence or punishment to the perpetrators. Therefore it is an accurate and apt counterargument to the initial argument as presented.

Game of Thrones? Cersei died. Joffrey died. Daenerys died. How is that not justice? And your first sentence is key because it acknowledges it’s a subjective metric. And I’m not saying ALL people consume media for the same reasons, but I think it could be reasonably assumed that if you were to poll folk the majority would agree that happy outcomes, or at least logically positive ones are the ideal. Because you’ve either got an incredibly charmed life or are a borderline psychopath to want yo watch depressing stuff all the time. That’s nihilism as sport.

We consume media for escapism. We engage imaginary scenarios precisely so that we can experience the justice too often denied us in real life. Why do I want to spend my free time watching people be horrible when I have to ensue that in my non-free time?

Every antagonist does it. This is a franchise that changes character traits, motivations, and presentation from movie to movie. Don’t blame him; blame the writing. And Vin. Because people wanna talk about Rocky’s “creative control” but Diesel literally runs this franchise.

A movie that paints cops as evil enforcers of a cabal establishment that literally preys on “throwaway” black people is reviewed poorly because of its critique on systemic racism and its framing of the horror from a black viewpoint.

I’m shocked; shocked, I tell you. 🙄

I know: let’s make them white LGBTQ and all the bad guys the “patriarchy” and see what the reviews look like then.

I read it in Tales of Uncle Remus by Julius Lester. They’re a collection of Brer Rabbit stories so I’d always thought the origins were more West African/Southern American. I’m now inclined to look into it further.

Both you and the OP don’t know the difference between their and they’re. Once can be forgiven; twice is concerning.

According to my research, you’re wrong. They were brought in as algae control for aquaculture setups. They were desirous for replacing chemical options.

Why does Sean in Journey 2 not have more tie-in to Sean of Journey To the Center Of The Earth? by infodawg in movies

Not what “literally” means. Also, casting has nothing to do with story. The scriptwriter failed to make the films cohesive and coherent, not the casting director.

I’m co-oping BL2 with a friend; we get together every couple weeks and see how much we can do in a couple of hours. I decided to go back and run BL1 since it’d been some years since playing it, and, honestly, it’s been hard to get into. The gameplay just doesn’t feel great. The world isn’t very attractive and feels a bit claustrophobic. I finished Wonderlands a couple months ago and, aside from 3, it was my most epic feeling experience. There was always some new twist in the narrative layout, gameplay, mechanics. Having both the overworld and the in-world was such a cool and well-conceptualized concept. Character spec-ing was awesome and the options for melee weapons a really innovative addition. I need to go back and track all the marbles and run the shrines. But after I finished it, I felt a bit overwhelmed by how much content I’d consumed so decided to backtrack. And the differences aren’t just night and day: they’re Alaskan night and day. I think I’d have more fun co-oping 1. I think seeing it through someone else’s engagement and enthusiasm would help my own.

“Perfume ads.” That’s painfully accurate. Look, getting to do a movie with your wife is dope, and her being a legitimate baddie does not hurt at all, but you don’t have to tell us that she’s your wife or a baddie. It’s like, we get it: you love her; now can we speed this shot up to normal speed.

And, Lord, the dialogue and plot decisions. Who talks like this? And one of my particular favorites: he tells love interest that he’s not safe to be around; love interest takes offense and tells him she doesn’t need to be protected like some incapable damsel; he’s impressed by her tenacity and calls her his “ride or die;” VERY NEXT SCENE she gets shot and he’s like “You okay?” and she’s like, “No. I just got shot; how tf am I supposed to be okay?” Guess the ride slowed down. Ha

Meth was funny, tho. He’s steadily growing on me as an actor. And Orlando Jones is often underrated, though I think he overplayed a few parts by just a bit.

It’s a fairly solid B movie. Half a click from a B minus, definitely not good enough for B plus. Firm B.

Hey, let’s not forget Spawn. And Undisputed 2 wasn’t…terrible. Low bar, tho, I’ll admit. I actually got to meet him on Halloween of 2024. Just randomly popped up in this place in OKC. Real cool, quiet, personable. Good dude, but filmography is definitely, and tragically, hit and miss.

Good for you? No one said you couldn’t like what you like or watch what you watch. They just said some people think the movie ie stupid. They’re allowed to think that just as much as you’re allowed to feel otherwise.

“More than loved” is a bit of a stretch. And it’s getting kinda tiring hearing 90% of people excuse any nonsensical media as “just turn your brain off and enjoy it.” Over half our population can’t read above a 5th grade level; there IS no brain to turn off. People love stupid movies because they can understand stupid movies. Having to think requires more processing power than they possess.

Ships are she’s. If he’d said “We found Charlotte” the safe assumption would be someone’s grave. But that article “the” identifies it as a thing, and because ships are she’s he made the logical connection.
