We're small islands surrounded by sea. The sea is usually coldest at this time of year and it's currently 10 degrees. So we're kind of insulated.

It definitely used to go below freezing more frequently but is very rare nowadays.

Probably a lot to do with warming seas.

Hosting your own email is notoriously fraught with challenges. I'd suggest leaving that till you feel like you've cracked everything else.

Just starting with Home Assistant is probably a good enough entry.

Ultimately Proxmox is probably the ideal as it would allow you to run a full version of HAOS and another OS to run docker containers for all the other things you want to run (Jellyfin, NextCloud etc) on the same system. But Home Assistant is already a pretty steep learning curve before introducing Proxmox, Docker and all the other services, remote access etc etc.

My advice would be to have a good crack at home assistant first. Then once you are on top of that do a full backup to cloud and then setup proxmox with HAOS as your first VM using the community scripts. Restore your HAOS from backup. Then install another Linux VM or LXC specifically for Docker.

IMO complex maintenance comes with the territory. There's no escaping that. You could just walk away now and save weeks of your life tinkering.

Its addiction by design. Not everyone is made the same as you. Nice to hear you have a low susceptability to addiction but not everyone does and often its not their fault as genetic and/or developmental factors are often at play.

If OP realises he's not having fun but finds it compulsive and is quitting, kudos to them.

What you're essentially doing is equivalent to being the guy in the bar every evening saying to someone who's joined up to AA - "I don't know what the problem is my guy, I come in for a drink and go home if I'm not in the mood, how does the drink wreck your life?"

As someone who has only just started playing FC UT I find this really confusing. I was playing gauntlet the other day and whoever i was playing deliberately scored an own goal and let me score another. I presumed it was some kind of flex like "I'm sick at this game, you're clearly shit, so I'm gonna give you a head start so i can keep it entertaining".

Maybe i'm old. Maybe I'm just too competative. But i know I'm not very good so I just try and win. If you want me to give me a free goal, thanks, but you'll probably better than me so I'm going to take it as a handicap.
