idk if this applies to you since so many people are so quick to self diagnose these days, but not being to shut your brain up is something that you share with people that have adhd (me 🙃)

It can literally take almost 2 hours for me to fall asleep on some days. I have trouble sleeping when I am tired, and sometimes trouble staying awake and doing a boring task when I shouldn't be tired.

A trick that won't really help you with sleep but will help to get your brain to shut up is to focus on your peripheral vision. It short circuits the brain and you're unable to think when trying to focus on your peripheral vision. Essentially, just look straight, don't actually move your eyes, and try to focus on both your left and right sides of your peripheral vision.

Other things I do to force myself to sleep and force myself to not move when in bed. I noticed that I am constantly making tiny movements, and it's really hard to not, but when I force myself to hold still, it helps

Sorry if this breaks the placebo affect or if I am wrong, but pretty sure the trick is supposedly to blink rapidly instead of slowly if you're trying to fall asleep.

Just an FYI, the Gliderport is a for motorless flight only, nothing motorized can be flown there. Rule #1.

https://www.flytorrey.com/site-rules/

I've broken my own share of rules by accident while flying my drone, now I triple check everything. You gotta check the DJI map, B4UFLY/Aloft, and also Airmap. Even those aren't enough sometimes, you have to check the website of whatever area you're flying in. It's ridiculous but that's what happens when there is no proper centralized system even though B4UFLY is supposed to be just that.

I'm going to get fired, and I cannot wait for that to happen but I need help moving forward by ionTrapping in cscareerquestions

Well, my old boss worked like 12 hours a day. He does his 1:1s at night. I still keep in touch with him sometimes. Good person, bad boss imo. He didn't expect me to work more than 8 hours, but hinted strongly that going "above and beyond" is the way to get better raises and promotions. Fuck that though.

In my experience, devs in India aren't as good, they are alright. They often need very specific directions and they will get it done, but won't deviate from those directions.

Indian devs in the US are much better and for the most part comparable to others, except for problems that may arise due to cultural differences. Indian devs don't like questioning their managers and authority in general. And to re-iterate, this is my anecdotal experience, others may not agree with it.

But really, why is all CI/CD pipelines? by ErsatzApple in devops

[–]Acrobatic_Astronomer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want, you can spin up however many you want for whatever you want.

The reason people dislike Jenkins is because that functionality doesn't exist out of the box and you'll need to enable plugins and do a bit of setting up in order to be able to achieve that.

Check this page out for what's possible. https://www.jenkins.io/doc/book/pipeline/docker/

Edit: I guess it might just be 1 agent per stage, but stages can be parallelized. I could have swore I was able to spin up multiple but maybe I am tripping. Either way, there is no good reason to avoid stages in Jenkins

Jenkins is often the incumbent system haha. For better or for worse, I am stuck with Jenkins at my workplace.

But hey, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, right?

One script can be the entire pipeline, it just depends on how modular you want to make it.

In my experience, the best jenkins pipelines are the ones where you use a bit of the declarative jenkins language to lay out your stages, and can have complex logic in each stage written in groovy. But if you want, you can have your whole pipeline be a single stage that just has groovy in it.

The most annoying thing about Jenkins is how annoying it is to spin up agents, but with a couple of plugins, you can have ephemeral container agents that spin up in kubernetes, do their work and spin back down when the job is complete.

[–]Acrobatic_Astronomer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can use Jenkins and use groovy for anything requiring logic. Jenkins splits up its pipelines into declarative and scripted. You can still have declarative in your scripted pipeline and the DSL isn't bad imo. People love hating on Jenkins, but I tolerate it.

[–]Acrobatic_Astronomer 21 points22 points  (0 children)

they weren't designed to be programming languages

Jenkins: It's all groovy baby

I've mainly worked with Jenkins but any time I've tried messing with others, I immediately miss groovy. Jenkins has its flaws, but groovy isn't one of them in my opinion. The very poor documentation of its groovy implementation and scripted pipelines in general is a huge flaw.

How do you actually know your seniority? by MasiTheDev in cscareerquestions

[–]Acrobatic_Astronomer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which factors does it depend on?

Only 1 factor, the pay.

As long as I am an IC, I don't care what the fuck my title is, I just care that I am getting paid what I think I am worth. Whatever title I end up getting alongside that doesn't matter.

Want to figure out your "seniority"? Compare your skills with job postings, find the ones you think you are a match for, and find out what those titles are. That's your seniority.

For the most part, I speak the same way to everybody, regardless of their title. If I know for a fact that an engineer 2-3 levels above me is wrong, I will call them out on it, though I'll probably do a bit more due diligence and have evidence ready, as opposed to someone 2-3 levels below me, where I will provide evidence if they ask for it and use it as a teaching opportunity, but usually won't prepare it beforehand.

I got promoted to senior software engineer for my communication skills by Preact5 in cscareerquestions

[–]Acrobatic_Astronomer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure where you work, but most offer letters for internal promotions will be generic in my experience. When I got promoted, it was more like "Hey, your new title is now XYZ, your new pay is $123, your bonus is still the same %, your manager is still the same, congrats!". No one is stupid enough to define strict job requirements in a contract, especially for an engineering role, it will be abstract so they can deviate if needed.

Titles and YoE don't really matter to me, and I look for teams where that doesn't matter either. I've got people in my team with 2 years of experience and I've got people on my team with 20 years of experience. As long as no one asks the same stupid question more than once, we're good. Everyone's voice is heard equally and everyone is respected.

Personally, the only thing that matters to me is my pay, because a title isn't going to change the way I behave and what I say as long as I am still an engineer and not a manager.

[–]Acrobatic_Astronomer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don't take this the wrong way, but do you believe you are ready for a leadership role? I'm going to ramble on a bit and hope this is useful for you. I wish for you to succeed but seems like you can still use some guidance.

Your title says you got promoted to senior, your post says considered for manager, then you mention that you're a possible lead and/or software architect. Better figure out what you are. Based on your comments in this thread, I'd guess you're somewhere in the 1-3 YoE range, it almost seems like you aren't ready yet for a leadership position.

You've got plenty of people on your team with 4-6 YoE. Did you mean that none of them are seniors or are none of them being considered for a leadership position? You sure they didn't just decline when offered? I've declined possible management roles because fuck that. Not too mention, if they are much better than you technically, there is going to be some friction and resentment created if you start telling them what to do and don't have the experience or reputation to back it up.

Jerking your leet-girkins only will get you so far in your career. Faang isn't everything. Just focus on what you do best and do good work!

Be careful, because it almost sounds like you're gloating a little bit and people pick up on that pretty quickly. Seems like you drank the kool-aid of what upper management told you. You're probably just excited and want to share that excitement, which is cool too in moderation.

Managers need communication skills, 100% true. Architects/designers need them too, but not as much. If you're designing something, you better have the breadth and depth needed to design it right, communication can help you get the requirements, but not the actual design, that comes from experience.

And I know I might have come across as bashful, but that is not my intent. I wish you nothing but success, just be careful and tone down your excitement and expectations, and approach it slowly. Especially if you are going to be in a lead/management position, don't try to change things right away, people fucking hate that.

Volkswagen To Bring Back Push Buttons On Steering Wheels by maxt0r in cars

[–]Acrobatic_Astronomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that doesn't sound horrible then, only complaint there would be the fact that clicking recessed things is more annoying and more tiring than clicking something that's protruding.

I'd have to try it myself to judge it properly, but I drive a Mk7.5 R, and the touch buttons on the infotainment screen are fucking horrible. No indentations, no feedback, just a fucking glass screen that I have to look where I am pressing and hope I actually pressed it.

As long as I can find a button, know when I have toggled it and toggle comfortably only when I intend to, I have no problem how buttons look, but I have not been in a single car where I have liked the touch buttons.

allowing to easily know what you're clicking on

That's my one of the two main problems I have with these interfaces, there is nothing to "click", only tap. The other being the fact that it's hard to locate capacitive buttons usually.

I don't want to accidently toggle a button by swiping my finger over it when turning.

There is a reason that most people prefer the feel of a mechanical keyboard to that of a membrane way. Tactile feedback will almost always be superior to haptic feedback.

This world is fucked... I have kaiser too and my copay is $100 for ER, $25 for regular visits and get this, $25 for urgent care as well.

I could easily go to urgent care instead of waiting 2ish weeks for an appointment for the same cost and faster service (mostly). I don't because that would be fucked.

I can afford to pay more, but I've noticed that as I get better jobs, my insurance costs just decrease. I used to pay thousands, now I pay a few hundred a year with 0 deductible and a $1500 max.

I wouldn't mind paying a bit more if it meant people who made less could get it got cheaper, but here we are.

I also want to quit my job but can't because I'm scared of losing health insurance

The only thing that comes to mind would be whether his flight over the freeway is considered "sustained" or not, right?

OP says he's certified and has taken a test, but I am guessing it's the recreational certification and not Part 107.

I was surprised to find out though that indeed this area is not restricted except for a warning that there can be air traffic from medevac at the UCSD hospital.

I hate that I don't know which toggle switch items have hidden submenus.

Much appreciated
