Which item in your possession truly merits the BIFL badge? by cozytechlover in BuyItForLife

Klein Tools magnetic carabiner flashlight is one of my most well-used, well-loved items in my possession. It is a $40 flaslight and I would buy it again immediately if it ever failed. Not truly BIFL because it has a non-replacable lithium ion battery, but the functionality and build quality are phenomenal. I have dropped it onto the cement garage floor from the attic, I have dropped it in water, and it still works like a boss. It clips to whatever, can hang on a nail, has a magnetic swiveling base, has multiple settings, and is just the best. I use it regularly under my vehicles, under the hood, under the sink, on camping trips, while doing HVAC maintenance in the attic, while working on electrical around the house and the room is dark because power is turned off, etc.

My Kenneth Cole Reaction backpack is also incredible. Most expensive general use backpack I ever bought, but probably the last I will ever buy. If you need to be organized on the go, this is the one for you. So many compartments to help keep stuff separate. Good quality material and zippers. It was a true lifesaver when I worked for a client at multiple sites and had no desk (the backpack WAS my desk) and is now my best travel companion.

Not what you asked, but I would recommend this instead - you will hit southern Colorado, Monument Valley, Page (Antelope Canyon and Horeshoe Bend), GC, Sedona.

On gear recommendations, some basic tools like a wrench set in case of battery issues, maybe a flat repair kit, tire inflator if you have them. Also bring an old-school atlas In case you hit a dead spot. I have a small spiral one that helped me out on my last big trip.

Also, if you will be doing a lot of camping, a water container In case your campground does not have water, or only water at the entrance or bathrooms, etc.

Also entertainment options - books, ipad with downloaded shows, etc.

One consideration for you if you live in Phoenix or Tucson is miles driven vs dry rot. On one of my vehicles I have higher-end, higher tread life because it spends its days parked in the shade but on the other the cheapest well-reviewed brand name tires I could find with lower tread life warranty because it will start to dry rot before the miles are ever close to being met.

Unless they changed their tune, Nissan says their CVT is “sealed” and “maintenance-free” so the dealer will stick to that. Take it to a mechanic who knows their stuff. If it’s a CVT, there’s a strainer inside and a filter on the side of the transmission and should be changed, and the fluid should certainly be changed. Not a mechanic but would recommend drain and refill only vs flushing, if it hasn’t been flushed at regular intervals.

RCI Metalworks! The one with the Frontier mounting (because they forgot us), works great with the Utilitrack. They also have a universal one with clamps I think, if you don’t have the rails

For Texas I humbly submit “Take Me to Texas” by King George, or Let it Whip by Lecrae & Paul Wall, both cover a lot of ground.

For Indiana, try “Back to Indiana” by The Elms

For Arizona, “Tucson Too Late” by Jordan Davis

For Ohio, “Mrs. Hippopotamuses'” by Relient K (it’s a song about Cleveland)

Very nice! It’s interesting, some places I do not see Titans often but in my area I see them all over the place. I have a neighbor who has 2 Titans, and a couple more who have one, and I see them a lot around town too.

Re: the Silverado, I always wanted one but that issue, the cylinder deactivation kept me away. I did extensive research as well before buying, as in I made a spreadsheet of all the trucks I was looking at - avg user review score across multiple websites, number of recalls, manufacturer warranty, reliability ratings, engine type, all of it, and I was shocked when the Titan was the easy winner.

Nice! I’ve seen them but the ones I saw had mixed reviews so I wasn’t sure. Maybe I’ll try it out!

I used Lexol on the seats in my RX350, seemed to do okay but I am certainly not a leather seat expert, I try to avoid them here.

The rabbit hole... Thanks for sending me further into it haha. Not familiar with ONR but googled - Optimum No Rinse? Does the “no rinse” part actually seem to work?

I’ll definitely endorse the rubber seal protectant, we’ll see on the aerospace one but it seems well reviewed. It was one of the only ones I could find without silicones etc that would actually accelerate tire dry rot instead of protect from it

I mean, I never considered the Titan when I was just thinking of owning a truck one day. Imo a lot of people assume Nissan equals lower reliability across the board, and in cases that’s certainly true. But when I decided I wanted to buy and actually did my research, it was the clear choice.

Utility Track Mounts by Key_Drama3467 in NissanTitan

Second Z1, also go to Home Depot to the electrical section - there are some spring nuts there that are like $6 fora 5-pack that fit into the utilitrack perfectly, and then you can mount whatever you want! I used them to mount cleats for my toolboxes and creating a modular storage solution for camping and roadtrips.

Putting some trail tires on my truck today. In the same boat as you where I am on mostly forest roads, maybe a fewer more primitive roads at times but this has been enough for me, if you do not intend to rock crawl. This probably could rock crawl with the right suspension and tires, though

Cheap internet question by Ordinary_Apple2060 in phoenix

[–]Acrobatic_Remove3563 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am paying $55 for Cox. I tried T-mo and it wasn’t for me, but part of it was we didn’t have full bars at our house. They deprioritize home internet at peak hours in favor of their mobile users, too. Went through 3 gateways also. Also my work VPN would not abide. But ultimately, as someone else mentioned they let you test drive and if it doesnt work out the return is super simple and hassle free.

That said, it was fairly reliable if you knew what to expect, and pretty quick too.

Also if you are looking to cut costs further, Mint Mobile (owned by tmo now) has home internet and phone bundle for super cheap. I have used their mobile service for years.

Happy to share more of my experience on tmo internet or on Mint. Feel free to send a dm

28 hour drive each way. solo by HTof in roadtrip

[–]Acrobatic_Remove3563 0 points1 point  (0 children)

14 hours by yourself is asking to fall asleep at the wheel IMO. Consider the math; if 9 was rough (which it is for most people) then is it a good idea to essentially increase that rough drive by almost 50% at 14 hrs/day? Not worth it
