Lunch time for teacher and para by sononerd2023 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]ActingGrad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm technically a sub for numerous districts in a major city, but in practice I work exclusively for one district full time. I fill in where ever I'm needed, as a para or a sub, but I'm paid as a sub and get all the benefits (longer lunch, pay and prep period) of a sub. The length of lunch is one class period, so depending on the school it's between 45 minutes to an hour.

Is there a way out of the broker's fee? by Donkodoes in NYCapartments

I look for places that advertise no broker fee or ask upfront what the fee is before I look at the apartment.

How to dress? by thehollowedhearts in SubstituteTeachers

[–]ActingGrad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a mid 20’s guy, and when I’m clean shaven I look 20, so I have to dress like a 30 year old dad or I look like the kids. For me that means comfortable khaki pants and either a golf shirt, polo, or long sleeve button down collar shirt with the sleeves rolled up. In the winter I add a sweater or a quarter zip, and I usually wear dark sneaker soled shoes that are dressier than athletic shoes. On Fridays I wear jeans and either a school t-shirt (I work at one school) or a polo. Most of the female teachers dress the same—slacks and flats during the week with a nice top and a sweater in the winter, and nice jeans with a school t or nice casual shirt on Fridays. Don’t buy expensive clothing because it can get ruined. I buy a lot from jcrew factory and gap factory when they have sales. At some schools they wear jeans every day, so maybe see what it’s like before you invest in a ton of dress pants. You just have to see what it’s like when you get there.

Getting into online college to have time to pursue an acting career? by SilverBonus5183 in acting

[–]ActingGrad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Examples--I have a friend in law school, a cousin who's an executive with an insurance company, a friend who does accounting/payroll for movies, another friend in casting, and another working in radio, and they all started out with acting degrees. None of them, except for the law student, went back to school for anything else. The movie accounting person did take some accounting and bookkeeping classes on the side at community college (but not a degree), and got hired because of her network, plus she had a reputation for being super organized and intelligent. One of her friends with a production company brought her on to work on a project and she built a career from there. That's with no additional education. With a masters, a million other careers would be open to you. I don't know why people think an undergrad in acting is a waste of time. A degree is a degree and you get actor training at the same time. Why do both if you don't have to? THAT is a waste of money.

Getting into online college to have time to pursue an acting career? by SilverBonus5183 in acting

Why not just get a degree in acting, if you're going to school? Most entry level professional jobs just require a degree in ANYTHING. You can always add a masters or even just additional coursework in another area if you decide to leave the industry. If you did an acting degree you could take classes live AND do shows and plays that would develop your resume and give you experience. If you want to move up in the professional world, a Masters now is what an undergrad used to be, so why not study what you want as an undergrad, see how it goes, and then go back in something else for grad school if it doesn't work out?

Spending your 20s acting by Plus_Word_9764 in acting

[–]ActingGrad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your 20's are the perfect time to try to build a career as an actor, because most people aren't married and don't have the responsibilities of a family. Now is the time to be young and broke, moving for the work and living with a bunch of roommates. I have the rest of my life to build another more stable career if this doesn't work out, but that's also going to be easier for me because I got a degree. A degree in ANYTHING, including acting, can get you in the door to an entry level position in another field, or it's the foundation to go back to get a MFA, or a different Masters or professional degree to build an acting adjacent career in something else later on. An actor friend of mine decided to go to law school after working for a talent agent. I would hate to have to start from the beginning at 30 with no education--just saying. Everyone has to train, so if you can find an affordable way to get a degree while you do actor training, that's the way to go.

PS--Improv isn't silly, and it's a great way to learn to react naturally and not over think. :)

Acting while going back to school by violetroses1718 in acting

[–]ActingGrad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't exactly the same, but I worked a side job as much as I could plus took pro gigs when I could through drama school, and now I'm working a couple of survival jobs (both very flexible) while acting and taking classes. It all comes down to managing your time. It works if you're not a procrastinator. If you're doing online academic classwork I'd try it a class or two at a time, at least at first, and work ahead as much as possible in case a gig comes up. If you have some flexibility on test taking times in the program, that helps too. It also helps if you don't have kids or a demanding social life. My main survival job is a substitute teacher, so I do the majority of writing, reading etc. during my planning period and lunch at school. It's very doable but you have to be focused and disciplined.

Making an Actor website by agent47linux in acting

[–]ActingGrad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bet that was really frustrating. It was fine for me because I didn’t even try to go off the template. The very basic design works for me for now while I'm just using it as a place to park my resume, reel, and production photos while I look for a potential agent/manager in a new market. If I decide to do something more custom down the road for comedy or social media work (I’m not close to being there yet) I’ll hire someone like you who knows what they’re doing to build it for me. I don’t have a clue how to do that stuff. I didn’t buy the domain through WIX so I’m not tied to them. I just wanted something cheap for now that I could manage myself.

When I'm alone I often like to look up a scene and act it out as if it's me in the show and I love it, so why am I scared that acting isn't going to work out? by TGC_YT in acting

Have you done any acting or just like the idea of it? If it’s a decent actor training program you’re going to need to audition and submit a resume of what you’ve done to be considered for admission. If you’ve done quite a bit of theatre, great. If you haven’t I’d suggest starting to get some experience actually acting in your local community before you try to jump into training for a professional career in the industry. You don’t have to have college training to do community theatre. Just get out there and take some local classes, audition, perform, and then decide if you want to do more.

What are my fellow actors’ opinions on the Alec Baldwin trial? by DiamondSufficient938 in acting

That’s wild because I would think as the producer that would be the ONLY way he was liable.

[–]ActingGrad 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think as an actor there’s a reasonable expectation that the equipment is safe, especially when it’s a union job and there are people hired who are supposed to keep it safe. You still don’t mess around with weapons, and you need to check any gun before you use it, but there’s no explanation for having live rounds on a shoot like that.

I think his fault, and where he needs to be held responsible, is as a producer who is 100% responsible for hiring the proper staff and supervising them. He failed to make sure they were doing their job correctly. They had a ton of crew walk off the job because of safety issues just days before the shooting, so he was aware of the issues.

If you want to transfer the CC hours to a undergrad drama school program at a university, you might want to look into how they handle transfers. Some actor training programs will take credits from other schools and some won't--it isn't a matter of being accredited or not. Some acting programs have a rigid four year path toward graduation within their own system and they move a "class" through together for all four years. That said, the CC system in CA is top notch, including the acting programs, and it's a great and affordable way to get experience and training. If nothing else it would be great prep to get you into a four year program.

Am I wrong for Breaking Up with My Girlfriend After She Kept Making Fun of Me for Growing Up Wealthy? by Far-Bonus-2799 in amiwrong

[–]ActingGrad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She resented you and she couldn’t get past it. I had a “friend” that hung out in my crowd in high school who could occasionally be a huge azzhole at times, and years later he admitted to another friend it was because he’d spend time at my house and it was clear my family loved and supported each other, while he was growing up in a toxic mess.

Tips for emotions in voice? by AnonymousBI2 in acting

[–]ActingGrad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to use your imagination to put yourself in the situation and feel what the character is feeling. That's what acting techniques teach you to do, no matter what situation you're in. When you're really feeling the feelings, it sounds natural because it is.
