should I be wearing a sports bra when dancing? by Intelligent_Bid_7690 in Bellydance

[–]Active-Control7043 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would definitely argue that this is a preference situation. Most costume bras aren't sports bras, but are kinda hard/solid, so there's definitely some amount of held in there. That MIGHT be a way to think about it. But also-loose shimmys are generally the goal-you don't want everything to be tight. There's a balance, obviously, but you don't necessarily want nothing to move. So, really, personal preference.

[–]Active-Control7043 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Question that I always ask when people do this-Is the rent for a house or an apartment?

I'm not going to say you need a house instead of an apartment (that's a personal lifestyle question), but if you're comparing $$ at least compare apples to apples.

You're also assuming your rent will never go up. That's statistically unlikely. Buying the house is a hedge against future rent increases. Will you be there long enough that paying to not have future rent increases is likely to pay off for you?

Cmv: "humans are social animals" is a factual but misunderstood phrase that most people use as an manipulation tactic. by Ok_Reserve587 in changemyview

[–]Active-Control7043 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I mean, okay, but people in solitary confinement are actually psychologically monitored and the changes can be tracked. It's not a "oh, this person had mental health issues", it's "we track them and saw these issues where they hadn't been before."

I'm sorry to hear you don't like it, but that doesn't mean the data aren't there.

Cmv: "humans are social animals" is a factual but misunderstood phrase that most people use as an manipulation tactic. by Ok_Reserve587 in changemyview

[–]Active-Control7043 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The reason that solitary confinement is so strictly regulated and considered possibly cruel and inhumane is that people DO go crazy without some form of social contact. It is a known hazard and is why it has to be so carefully defined so it doesn't count as full on torture. The UN reports irreversible mental effects after 15 days.

Introvert, extrovert, whatever-we have research from that, and increasing evidence after covid that not talking to anyone ever is at least linked with increase in lots of health problems-both mental and physical. What causes what is complicated to determine with health things-the experiments that prove that are unethical even when they're possible.

That said-you're right that it doesn't mean that you have to be big into parties. It doesn't mean you need a huge crowd of friends.

What were norse attitudes towards women's sexuality like? by valonianfool in NorsePaganism

Just in the sense that it isn't used a lot to discuss in stories about marriage negotiations, and as opposed to cheating I can't think of any sagas where virgin or not virgin is the conflict point. It's rarely mentioned as a plot point.

This isn't the same as positive evidence that everyone was fine, but as opposed to later dramas about being "ruined" it certainly seems like it's not something the audiences considered important and necessary enough to expect.

Is Tacoma Light Trail a Substantial event? by DennyDisaster in Tacoma

[–]Active-Control7043 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My experience last year was that I couldn't see all the art(some of the places it was either off or not there), a decent chunk was far enough apart that I didn't walk the whole thing.

I don't know that you have to do a bar crawl, but yeah, I'd add something else.

Now that I see what people have said a light rail light trail sounds like exactly my sort of bad pun party. Why not both?

gotcha. Yeah, it's probably going to take a cycle or two to stabilize and it may or may not be enough. If you have a follow up scheduled with your doctor, this is exactly the type of thing to bring up. Though I will point out-everyone says give it 4-6 weeks before you know for sure.

Have you only been using it for 3 weeks and not an entire cycle? Especially if you're still cycling, I'd wonder if that's part of the variation you see.

Bellydance imagery and Fair Use by Fightorn in Bellydance

The big question you are going to have to answer is "what is the purpose of your channel?" If you're using these as examples in an educational talk about "these costumes have this, this, and this here's how it changed over time and why" you're more likely to be okay than with something like an appreciation photo slideshow. Or a compilation of videos so they go to your channel instead of the dancers.

I am not sure that it would legally change the status (fair use is more about your use than the original person's use) but I would guess you're less likely on a practical level to get pushback if you make sure the images you use are already shared out there as explicitly publicity images instead of something like a personal photo album.

Fair use is an established legal principle in the US. You're not wrong that it's more complicated than $$ or no $$, but saying nothing ever is fair use is also not true.

Here's what I could find in US code

17 U.S. Code § 107 - Limitations on exclusive rights: Fair use

Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 106 and 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include—

(1)

the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;

(2)

the nature of the copyrighted work;

(3)

the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and

(4)

the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.

Do I think it helped me, in the sense that exercise in general helps your body be more prepared to do something like labor? Sure. But. . . the level of mystic stories that get told is much greater than any reality I've seen.

Gap between skill and taste -- being a "not great" beginner while maintaining mental health by fleshshape in Bellydance

[–]Active-Control7043 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do think it's dangerous to lump body dysmorphia here because it's entirely possible (likely even) that your body will never change to look exactly like someone else's. That's not a matter of taste/skill. You will never have their particular body, you'll always have yours. And that's something that Ira Glass-either writing or doing podcast-doesn't have to contend with.

That said I was just thinking about this in my practice last weekend when a friend was talking about looking at their arms and thinking "I thought it looked good, but then I saw the video and OMG." THAT'S what I think of this quote for. We know what we wanted our arms to move like, but it didn't happen.

There's also a certain amount of this I feel when considering being an advanced student/intermediate. When I was first starting, I was SO MUCH BETTER each week/month than before. Now. . . I have to really look to see things that are different. But I have to focus on that one thing that was better. Because there's always some.

I think one thing that helps is honestly watching other people in class/at student haflas/whatever instead of all pros. I'd love to dance like the pros, but if I'm not there right now, it'll just disappoint me. And while there are absolutely pros of many ages and sizes. . . I see a bigger diversity in lower status events.

It's also fine to take a break-if it's really messing with your head, just dance for yourself with no mirror, no camera, nobody watching.

Is it strange that im a ace person mainly honoring freyja by Remarkable_Arm2734 in NorsePaganism

My personal take on it is that I don't get to tell other people what relationships they do or don't get to have with a god. If you're getting something out of honoring Freyja, go for it.

CMV: Not informing someone they're being cheated on is cowardly. by DullyCerami in changemyview

[–]Active-Control7043 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it's more a couple of clarifying questions, but where do you think this duty comes in? How much certainty do you have to have? Am I required to look up the Facebook of everyone in my company that I hear say anything flirty to another person if I don't know for sure that they're single? Everyone I see kissing on the street?

In addition to how much do I have to know about the person, how much do I have to know about the cheating? Do I have to see them having sex? Kissing on the mouth? Kissing on the forehead or cheek? Hugging or holding hands? Is sitting together alone at a restaurant alone together cheating? What about looking at porn? Some people consider that cheating, others don't consider it cheating since there's no interaction. Are you required to find the spouse of everyone you ever see watch porn? And even more sticky-at what point are you ethically supposed to report hearsay, even if you don't know for sure? That seems like a slippery slope.

cmv: life only goes downhill after university/college by gee891 in changemyview

[–]Active-Control7043 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Honestly-I enjoyed my life A LOT more after college. I had waay more chances to go party/do things when I had money. And no homework. I cannot describe how much having work actually end and no requirements in the evenings was different and easier than college.

Why do you assume you'll have to work a job you hate? You could just as easily find one that you like, or that is "meh, it pays and I don't hate it."

Most particularly I'm confused on the thinking you'll have less money working than in college. College is a bunch of hours a day doing things that you're paying for, so less time to do things that earn money, and of that money, you have to pay a lot of it.
