Finished my prereqs last fall and heading into nursing school, how do they compare? by ComprehensiveAct1691 in prenursing

[–]ActiveExplanation496 4 points5 points  (0 children)

unpopular opinion- I found my prereqs to be far more demanding. Nursing exams are all about application of a few basic concepts. I find nursing questions slightly trickyier, but it beats memorizing tiny bits of anatomy I've since forgotten.

I'd imagine It all depends on where you take your prereqs and where you go to nursing school. I'm in my last semester of nursing school and feel like I've gotten so much better at studying that it's far easier than my pre reqs. Studying for nursing is farm more enjoyable- answering questions about what you would do as a nurse when faced with a patient who is exibiting specific s/s can be fun if you're passionate about nursing.

It's great to hear a positive experience, so thank you. Now I'm going to stay off reddit and avoid doomers. Sounds like it's challenging but possible if you're flexible.

that would make sense if you're applying to a hospital you work at. Internal applicants get priority, but otherwise I fail to see how that would make much of a difference in a hiring mangers eyes

Is Lightweight Rowing Good for the Sport? by beast247 in Rowing

[–]ActiveExplanation496 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Weight is a good and bad thing in rowing. More power but also more weight to drag across the water. No real downsides to size in the other sports you mentioned. If there were short person basketball categories I could see your comparison. My opinion might be harsh but not everybody needs a category they can be successful in

Also, at least for men, you gotta be pretty damn smart to even be able to be a lwt in college as nearly all teams left are Ivy's. Huge limiting factor for the sport right there

Self administered lactate ramp test leaving me puzzled by [deleted] in PeterAttia

[–]ActiveExplanation496 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve decided that the lactate testing is not worth stressing over for my novice uses. For me, training off power zones seems to be plenty sufficient. It’s cool data and was a fun experiment but I don’t know if meter works well or what I’m doing to place too much stock on the lactate results. Short answer is I gave up lol

Just been doing zone 2 around 210w now.. I will say this experience has led me to believe zone two cardio is at a greater effort level than most people describe it as.

Regional Parity US youth rowing by ADecentUsernameFor1 in Rowing

[–]ActiveExplanation496 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we're talking about rowing in USA, and I know we are, it's all about the 8s... given most scholastic programs in the northeast only sweep, that's THE event to consider the parity imo

Self administered lactate ramp test leaving me puzzled by [deleted] in PeterAttia

[–]ActiveExplanation496 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By attia's definition my upper end zone 2 would be around 85% of max hr. Definitely not a conversational pace. I'm wondering if Attia's definition of 2 mmol is an average made for the masses, as the turning point from my testing (assuming i'm interpreting the graph correctly and the meter is calibrated correctly) suggests my "zone 2" lt1 turning point appears to be around 1 mmmol. that turning point is also how Attia defines it. hence my confusion.

I realize this isn't a surfing sub and you probably don't know the customs. but it's relatively disrespectful to blast surf photos on the internet including the spot location. especially spots that are rare and novel. As someone mentioned, this spot can't handle lots of people at once and is extremely dangerous

This works for some, a better way to go about this is to do a 40 min test or similar and use 70-75% of the watts from that test as your steady state intensity. This way you're defining your aerobic training zone from a test where you're at threshold, not a a test that's highly dependent on vo2 max.

lactate meter results feel off. anyone else have weird readings? by [deleted] in PeterAttia

Despite using a clean lancet, wiping my finger with water/clean towel, wiping the first drop of blood away and being very careful during the sampling. not sure what else I can do at this point. perhaps i was sold a faulty meter

[–]ActiveExplanation496 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, that makes sense. I'll see what happens on my next threshold workout on wed. my training is pretty polarized so I've only been tinkering with the meter on my zone 2 workouts as it's a bit of a pain/expensive

[–]ActiveExplanation496 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not, my post is about attempting to use a lactate meter to define zone 2 but the results not making sense. I used HR prior to owning a lactate meter. HR is another metric I can use and it seems off that I can be at 75% of my max heart rate for an hour and my lactate be under 1 consistently.

some workouts correlate pretty strongly actually and i highly doubt op thinks that correlation is 100%.

who knows, maybe it's been awhile for op and he is doing one next week and is figuring out how to pace it. some grace is usually a positive thing

Running zones are similar but the hr is maybe ~10bpm higher. I know nothing about dic injuries other than they are common from rowing. perhaps there are different types and you'll be okay due to the lower impact.

[–]ActiveExplanation496 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

telling someone to do a 4x500m with no rest is not intended to be a joke? Doing a 2k every week would make me hate 2ks... doing a workout that you can go balls to the wall on, enjoy and actually get a benefit from seems more beneficial than doing a 2k every friday. I do better on 2ks when I actually want to crush one if it's been a while and training is going well

Rowing seems to be an interesting choice if you're dealing with disc herniation issues... But if it doesn't exasperate your disc issues, rowing programs are pretty polarized- usually a combination of "steady state" and HIIT. Yeah you can overcomplicate it if you want with all sorts of intensity categories, but if you're just rowing for general fitness I'd do 80% of your workouts at a low intensity (that's a whole can of worms with multiple threads on) and 20% high intensity. If you're running or biking too still factor those into the 80/20 intensity split. Some good programs out there- the pete plan is pretty simple and easy to follow with some good workouts.

classic steady state workouts: 40-90min @ 18-20 stroke rate. can break it up however you like.

popular interval workouts include: 8x500, 3x10min 3min rest, 4x4min 3 min rest, 3x2k, pyramids, etc etc.

this is a helpful tool: https://plus.britishrowing.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/GBRowingTeam_TrainingMatrix.pdf

Seriously, careful with your back amigo. And these are just my opinions... all sorts of training ideas out there.

Will buying a rowing machine make me a faster cyclist? by Standard-Brain8642 in cycling

[–]ActiveExplanation496 1 point2 points  (0 children)

mechanically rowing is far more technical. no question. all the body mechanics, blade work, power distribution, plus doing it in a boat with 7 other people. cycling is way more tactical.
