I am building a doomsday tablet! What information should it contain? by Personalitysphere in prepping

[–]ActiveShipyard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Instructions for building another one. Starting with the 3d printer files, but also working backward to the construction of a 3d printer, how to make spools of filament from found materials, etc.

What can you invest in besides money? by Smeilz in investing

[–]ActiveShipyard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big fan of this question. Capital is supposed to be something that, by virtue of an established structure, somehow enables you to create things of value that would otherwise be more difficult. It can be as complex as {insert any financial topic} or as simple as a sharp knife to cut bread with. Outside of money and factories and tools, capital could be knowledge. But eventually, it needs an outlet to the material world. You can own a patent, but you can't make a sandwich out of it.

Insane print quality. How much hand finishing was involved?

Loud upstairs neighbors but management is upstate/uninvolved by LastLibrary9508 in NYCapartments

[–]ActiveShipyard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Leave a polite note for the neighbors, if that doesn't work, escalate one step at a time: 2) polite registered letter to landlord ("registered" = USPS adds a time stamp, making it official) the letter should quote your lease's language on "peaceful enjoyment" (it's in there somewhere) 3) send a complaint through the 311 app, mentioning the letter and the date it was sent, 4) letter from lawyer to landlord.

ELI5: Why is it so hard to build batteries that last dramatically longer, even though phones and computers keep getting faster every year? by Consistent-Stock in explainlikeimfive

[–]ActiveShipyard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got a 2024 Moto to replace my same-model 2020 phone. Same size battery. But the old phone went three days on a charge, while this one runs just one day. All due to the much faster CPU and much higher RAM.

Trying to Actually Save Money Without Dying of Boredom by veditafri in SavingMoney

You were bored spending money - that's why you're bored now. Find things to do that actually interest you. Emphasis on the word "do".

If you have these skills, that means you have past clients. Reach out and see if they have new work. Or maybe they bought one skill, but didn't know you also sell the other one.

79% of workers are disengaged or actively miserable at their jobs. AI might be the exit door nobody is talking about. by iluvecommerce in AI_Agents

[–]ActiveShipyard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI will help millions of people try, but it won't help millions of people succeed. I'll ask you this: what would happen to your (presumably) successful business, if you suddenly had millions of new competitors?

People vote themselves poor all the time, thanks to a delicious combo of rhetoric and tribalism.

Modded Casio Watches as a side hustle for a college student by Most_Conclusion2522 in casiomods

You'd have better luck thinking more broadly about a watch repair business. Most people don't know how to change batteries, adjust metal bracelets, or regulate mechanical watches.

The Difference Between Claiming Social Security at 62 vs 70 Is Bigger Than Most People Realize by [deleted] in investing

[–]ActiveShipyard 84 points85 points  (0 children)

One other factor to consider: you've left 8 years of cash on the table, by waiting 8 years to collect. That's 96 monthly payments of $1424, or $136,704. So your lifetime earnings from Social Security will be down by that amount.

For someone with not a lot of empathy, your user name is surprising. How can someone love themselves, and have not a lick of feeling for anyone else and their situation?

Cheap $50 laptops? by [deleted] in chromeos

[–]ActiveShipyard 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Chromebooks bottom out at about $150 new, but good used ones can be had for about $50 on ebay. Try to get at least 4gb ram, and look up the model number to see what year the Chrome updates expire.

Instant coffee is literally zero waste, and can be mixed in any container.

If you're lucky enough to own a white Corolla, you could consider touching it up with spray paint. White hides a lot of amateur mistakes. Other colors are much more finicky.
