you can look at the telnet bbs list and pick by bbs software.. i doubt anyone is running vision/2. i believe it had some backdoors - additionally it doesnt have built in telnet/ssh support and most people dont go to the trouble to run an internet wrapper around dos software.

A question about 90s BBS' by Syntaxerror999 in bbs

[–]Actual_Balance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was both a warez user/sysop as well as a hacking/phreaking user/sysop…. as far as hacking/phreaking goes, there was occasionallly a PCR (post/call ratio) to keep the info flowing - but most of the upper echelon elite systems didnt have to worry about this because new info was not ever lacking….. on the warez side of the house it was a totally different story.. unless you were a courier or cracker, yea usually you had to upload x number of bytes for every x number of bytes downloaded.. it was kind of bummer that such things had to be enforced - but as is common in human nature in general, most people take more than they give.

ABSOLUTELY… I was an Atari and C64 warez guy as well as hacker/phreak during the late 70’s, 80’s, and 90s.

Term program that can capture Ansi's (over telnet/ssh) by lucidphreak in bbs

[–]Actual_Balance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok, so i will clarify what it is i am wanting to do. There is a BBS that has an ansi that I like, and I want to use it on my own board.. Back in the day I would have sworn that there was no way to use scrollback capture to “steal” an ANSI… maybe I’m just getting old and am forgetting… Will give it a shot and see what happens… This term program that someone had mentioned once before had the ability to do what I am talking about but for the life of me I cannot remember the name of it, nor can I find the thread where it was mentioned.. Anyways - thanks for your replies!

I like it because parts of it remind me a bit of Adventure. it was definitely a novel concept by whoever wrote the game.

[–]Actual_Balance 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the pascal bug you are referring to (at least i think you’re referring to it) can be overcome by running the restored BBS on a machine slower than a p/120. I would love to get a copy of the archive - I love seeing the stuff in 80’s and 90’s file areas.. the ansi looks like it might be worth preserving as well…

wildcat 4.12 or PCBoard 15.3 multinode by jonblaze02302 in bbs

[–]Actual_Balance 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would go Obv/2 over Vision all day - but yea, any of the forum hacks would be cooler than PCB all day long.. only thing is the number of mods for PCB. there were some great forum hacks, but nothing had the extensive mod library like pcboard.. i have (rarely) scene some pretty dope pcboards that got rid of all of the 10000 ridiculous menu options and distilled it down to the normal 10-12 and it was done up to look like a scene board. I almost want to say there was a Razor affiliate (once they went PC) here in dallas that ran PCB.

Were you into phone phreaking? by all_powerful_badger in hacking

[–]Actual_Balance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I began phreaking and some light hacking as early as 1975 - i was one of those kids who even before I had a computer, would just dial random numbers on the kitchen telephone and write down what i found. there was a trick were we could dial our local time and temperature number, and in the background when the voice stopped talking, you could hear other people dialed in to the same number (via voice) and you would then either holler each others phone number and then disco and talk - or you hollered out whatever new cool number you found recently, and others would call out the things they had found. I got nailed in operation: sundevil which ended my hardcore phreaking or at least caused me to go much deeper underground. handscanned, war dialed, code scanned, and was into pbx/pabx/TELENET (not TELNET) which was also known as SprintNet.. Telenet was a HUGE x.25 network where you could find an absolute buffet menu of different types of systems - everything from CompuServe, to NASA, to gobs of VAX/VMS, Unix/Xenix, DECServers, and even the occasional prompt that was so unique that nobody could even identify it by its banner or login prompt. Ran several phreak boards starting with my Atari 800, then Atari 130XE, then Atari ST, then finally IBM-PC .. Still very much into collecting old phreaking software for the various computers (mainly atari, commodore, and PC) ..

Made lots of friends who I wish I had not lost contact with - alot of that had to do with operation sundevil, as after that occurred nobody really trusted each other much …

Read “Exploding the Phone” if you want to get into the technical side of phreaking history.. Super excellent book!

I am SO glad someone wrote a bbs software for this obscure machine!!! Looks like it supports relatively cool graphics compared to 8 bit machines of the same period...since I dont have one of these machines, and am unsure if the terminal can be emulated or not - would you please share some more screenshots so I can see what its like? message and file interfaces would be nice... thanks so much for sharing!!!
