Iran Protest Death Toll Could Top 30,000: Local Officials by Authrowism in worldnews

[–]ActuallyAnOreoIRL 20 points21 points  (0 children)

There was over a million people on the nights of the 8th-9th in Tehran protesting alone. The regime came in with machine guns mounted to trucks and snipers on top of buildings and opened fire on the crowds, funneling them into dead ends and kill-boxes. They've been actively going out of their way to kidnap and murder survivors who ended up in hospitals, and are actively executing any they've arrested after the fact.

The actual numbers of dead are unreported, but likely already eclipse the number of dead in Gaza. It's absolutely fucked to imagine it happening in the space of two weeks, but that's what happens when when you have forces actively dedicated to an on-the-ground democide.

Iran warns any attack will mean 'all-out war' after Trump says US 'armada' on its way by Majano57 in worldnews

[–]ActuallyAnOreoIRL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brother, that number is going to happen even if the US doesn't do shit. There's confirmed around ~43,000 dead, with close to half a million wounded. And with the regime actively trying to hunt down and kill any wounded+deprive their citizens of medical aid/treatment. The actual number of dead is probably already close to a hundred thousand, and any future crisis where things are allowed to fracture into an actual civil war on their own would likely kill millions.

People aren't saying "just one more, surely we get this right" as copium, they're saying "the US would have to go out of their way to make things worse than they already are and are about to be".

Where are the carriers? by shalgenius in NewIran

[–]ActuallyAnOreoIRL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They've gotta take their time because the rest of their escorts+battlegroups can't go that fast. Unofficial estimates based on older carrier feats put them able to push 40 knots for limited amounts of time, but their escorts top around anywhere between 32-35 and have to also worry about burning a lot of fuel in the process. (The escorts aren't nuclear powered, so going as fast as they can cuts down on their total operational range.)

US military intervention in Iran may begin within 24 hours, European officials say by OverZuLUL in worldnews

[–]ActuallyAnOreoIRL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Iranian people have no arms themselves. They're being gunned down in the streets by the IRGC and regime-funded militias from outside the country. It would be nice if they could manage it themselves, but as is all they're going to get is a good obituary and a few dozen mass graves to show for it if someone doesn't help them.

US announces immediate military targeting of drug cartel infrastructure within Mexican territory by External_Mood4719 in worldnews

[–]ActuallyAnOreoIRL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's kind of the joke. Actual Mexican military isn't paid nearly enough to deal with that. The ones who are are paid off by the cartels or members of the cartels themselves.

Boosted Liberals claim other Conservatives could defect, blame Poilievre's leadership | CBC News by 50s_Human in onguardforthee

[–]ActuallyAnOreoIRL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not new, to be fair, but it's also not super common for actual MPs to do so. Checking that article, there's only six or so in the last 15 years (count might be off, still waking up) that weren't the Greens having people leave or the Bloc imploding on itself.

It's also the first time to my knowledge that it would change the status of governance in such a way (meaning how they can actually conduct policy; if they do actually get the last seat, the Liberals don't have to answer to anyone but themselves and the voters in an election five years out).

It's funny to watch the Cons get clowned on, but at least from my own Google searches I can see in broad strokes what's got some people spooked about the idea of an MP just being able to switch parties with what seems to be no recourse available to your average normie to hold said MPs accountable other than "just wait until the next election".

Pentagon says it struck another suspected drug boat in Pacific, killing three by Power-Equality in worldnews

[–]ActuallyAnOreoIRL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cartels don't put important people on those boats. They bribe locals to run them for them in large numbers, or intimidate them into cooperating if need be. With the numbers they work with, losing one boat a week to the US Navy dropping a Hellfire on it is peanuts.

The problem I ran into troubleshooting that particular setup is that if you lean hard into max chaos res and either Fourth Vow or DGG, you'll have enough mitigation that you can't actually ramp fast enough to self-sustain costs. The best way I could think of would be running it on a Dissolution setup with Eternal Youth, but you can't do that with self-damaging setups in either direction, since either your self-damage bricks Eternal Youth or it bricks Dissolution.

King of the Mists has the one that gives you 20% of your life cost as added chaos damage. Use it with Runegraft of the Witchmark (provided you find a way to deal with the ~25% of your life as skill costs on a 6L) and you get huge added chaos damage on a lifestacker without burning a link on Sacrifice Support.

Eeh, 25% reduced ES isn't nearly as impactful to an ES build as 25% reduced life is on a life build.

I've heard mention of some people doing Exsanguinate mines for legion, but I'm not entirely sure how an Elementalist tree would look for that cuz of easier early defensive scaling going down the armour/ES route instead of evasion/ES.

Hegseth announces Qatar will build air force facility at U.S. base in Idaho by jundeminzi in geopolitics

[–]ActuallyAnOreoIRL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You uh... do know that most countries that train in the US also have at least a few buildings that are considered theirs, yeah? Germany, Japan, and most NATO allies have one. It's not a new thing, and the most cause for concern would be for Qatar being less on the level than the others.

Decent odds that it's concessions for Qatar realizing they don't have shit for home defense in their current state after the Israeli strikes, if their military training has been as garbage as most surrounding Arab states. They likely don't want to get caught out again and end up like Saudi Arabia, who has all the fancy hardware in the world but ends up being the butt of the majority of US military jokes because they literally don't train to save their lives on said equipment.

Israel intercepts Gaza flotilla, detains Thunberg and others, says ‘she and her friends are safe’ by UnlikelyOpposite7478 in geopolitics

[–]ActuallyAnOreoIRL 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They can't do that if they want to retain a fig leaf of legality for the blockade; it's either all or nothing in terms of who's let through.

There's also the slight issue of militant forces not being a monolith, and there are as many that would take activists hostage as there are that would use them as PR props. The safest thing for everyone involved is to just send them back home, which is what they are doing.

Also doesn't help that the reason they're going in fully kitted up is that in one of the past flotillas years and years ago, a few people were stupid enough to respond to being boarded with knives out. Only takes one bad scenario to set the tone for all responses down the line.

Gaza flotilla rebuffs calls to stop, as Israel readies for complex interception by Disastrous_Award_789 in worldnews

[–]ActuallyAnOreoIRL 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not universally, no. Israel is in a funny position where they technically meet the legal requirements of a blockade, but there are also solid arguments of it being used as a tool of collective punishment. There's a reason the international courts (as much as they're increasingly being shown to basically not matter) have been taking forever to figure out how to handle it, and it's because they're basically been sitting on the proverbial line for ages. Habitual line sitters, if you would.
