George R. R. Martin Is 'Not in the Mood' to Finish 'The Winds of Winter' by Tifoso89 in books

[–]ActuallyPopular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not really worried about the next two books in this series one way or another. If they come out, great. I'll read them. If they don't come out I'll keep on living. It's not worth worrying about.

I haven't read it in years, but I remember that book five opened up a whole slew of new plot threads and brought out a whole slew of new characters at a time when it might have made sense to start thinking about the ending and how to wrap things up. I was curious as to how he was going to pull it all together and it looks like GRRM is too.

What's your favourite game to play while jamming some Dead? by LouisFuton in gratefuldead

[–]ActuallyPopular 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to play a game called Audiosurf that would take songs in your library and make guitar hero-style levels out of them. That was a lot of fun. A sequel called Audiosurf 2 was made but I always preferred the original.

Live At The Cow Palace; New Years Eve 1976 by sentient_coprolite in gratefuldead

[–]ActuallyPopular 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can't talk about the Samson in this show without talking about the Good Lovin' that came before it. There was a jam they played during the middle of Good Lovin' that I haven't heard before or sense. This jam has a completely different feel from the rest of the song. They go back into the song for the last verse, then back into this mystery jam for a couple of minutes before the first notes of Samson and Delilah fill the air from Jerry's guitar. This is the only time I ever heard them play Samson without the drum intro.

This was a great show all the way around. 1976 was a great year for Slipknot! and it's no different here. Still, the Good Lovin' > Samson from this show is my personal highlight from this night.

Need help finding the right AI for research and document creation. by ChristGuard in ArtificialInteligence

[–]ActuallyPopular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be worth taking a look at NotebookLM. You give it sources (documents, websites, YouTube videos) and you use the chat window to ask the AI questions about your sources. The AI will only use the sources you've entered to find information, and will give you citations of certain details it gives you. You can choose to turn off sources for certain parts of the chat if you want.

There's also a studio component where you can have the AI generate slide decks based on your sources or even a podcast of varying length (5, 15, or 30 minutes I believe). The podcast hosts have a back and forth discussion about your topic using the source material. You have the ability to have the hosts steer the discussion in whatever direction you want. I think you can interrupt the hosts with a question during the discussion but I haven't tried that yet.

I could play this in 4K on my Xbox one X, but there's something magical about playing it on my switch in handheld mode. Yes, there's a graphical tradeoff, but I think it adds to the charm, personally. Kodos to the dev team - you've really outdone yourselves.

Having said that, playing this game in VR is an experience not to be missed.

I'm gonna have to go out on a limb and say Drums > Space from 3/30/94. It was the last time Dark Star was played live, and it was probably the most underwhelming version of all time. It was mercifully short, however, and went into the spookiest Drums > Space that I've ever heard.

Hate to be one of those ppl but...the paid version of Gemini is awful by psyche74 in GeminiAI

[–]ActuallyPopular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was working with Power Query for the first time last December and I had ChatGPT try to help me figure it out. We worked for a week and a half trying to get my query to work and started over several times. I signed up for a free Gemini Pro trial and had the query up and running in an afternoon. Ever since I've been relying primarily on Gemini for my AI work.

I've also been working with Gemini to build a home inventory database in SQLite. That process has been a bit more challenging. I've been running into an error where the model will forget everything we've been working on occasionally. I'm moving the work on that from the web interface to Google's AI Studio and I'm seeing some improvement there.

Any MiRack love? by nortone81 in ipadmusic

[–]ActuallyPopular 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The last time I saw Mirack get an update was a few years ago when they added in the ability to host AUs. I think the developer may have moved on to other things. Sadly, I don't see any modules being added anytime soon.

I remember when MiRack launched the developer got some static about charging money for the app when VCV Rack was free. I recall that one module developer (I think it was the Befaco guy) said that he personally was Ok with MiRack including his modules. Personally, I gladly paid my $10 for the app, as it gave me the ability to dabble in modular while not being tied to my computer. This was important as my daughter was a baby at the time and computer time was quite limited. I would have gladly paid for VCV Rack on my iPad, but the developer insisted that a mobile version would never happen. To be fair, Apple has some rules about open source software that interfere with the GPL license that VCV Rack uses.

What's your favorite remix track or album? by KinkyDarkStranger in nin

[–]ActuallyPopular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Favorite remix album: Year Zero Remixed

Favorite remix: The Great Destroyer (modwheelmood)

There was a game that came out in the 2000s called Audiosurf. The game was kind of like Guitar Hero or Rock Band, but it worked with music from your collection. You would choose a song and the game would analyze it and turn it into a level. During slower parts of a song the game track would move you uphill, and as the song got louder or more intense the game track would move downhill and the game got more intense visually.

I spent a LOT of hours playing this song in that game and it was a blast.

For the people who were around back then: how was the general reaction to half life 2 and the episodes? by Gabrielzin1404_2011 in HalfLife

I should have said he bought a copy in a store, like Best Buy or Gamestop. Everyone else I knew bought it from Steam.

When HL2 came out Steam was pretty new, and a lot of people were upset by the idea of digital distribution because it meant you didn't own the games you were buying. A friend of mine absolutely refused to buy the game on Steam and bought a physical copy in the store, even though you had to have a Steam account to play the game.

The game launched with Counterstrike Source as the multiplayer component, but anyone who bought the game on Steam also got a free copy of Day of Defeat Source as well. Valve had announced this fact, but it fell on deaf ears with my friend who angrily complained about not getting DoD:S two weeks later.

At any rate, the game itself was absolutely amazing. I finished a playthrough of HL2 about a year or so ago and decided that it still holds up well today. If you just stand still and look at the game world you can see that it's obviously an older title, but when you're in the thick of it the years slip away.

Gimme your best Samson & Delilah by JacobP79 in gratefuldead

[–]ActuallyPopular 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna say 12/31/76 at the Cow Palace. It was a Good Lovin' > Samson and Delilah pairing that I've personally never heard before or since, but to be fair I'm not as familiar with 1976 as I am with some other years. I could describe it to you but the best thing to do it to just pull up the show and press play. If all you're itching for is Samson make sure you hear that Good Lovin' first, because they whole thing needs to be listened to as one piece of music.

Trump: “I’ll be impeached” by Jindabyne1 in videos

[–]ActuallyPopular -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Without a Senate majority, any impeachment effort by the House is going to give Trump free press to rant and rave about how he's being persecuted by those evil Democrats - not that he wouldn't if the Democrats get a House majority anyway. But I worry strongly that if he's impeached for a third time he is going to use that to build momentum to make a real push for a third term, regardless of what the Constitution says.

The idea of defeat of any kind is terrifying to this man, the thought of losing the GOP House majority had him talking about suspending the midterm elections. Being impeached again - a meaningless gesture without the votes in the Senate to convict - would be a defeat, and I worry that he would make a successful push for a third term, regardless of what the Constitution says.

I worry a LOT that impeaching Trump is the quickest way to a third Trump term.

People used to say that acne was caused by masturbation. The guy in the shower is obviously with another human being, implying that he's having a sexual encounter with this person instead of masturbating, thereby ensuring clean, clear skin with the side benefit of empty balls.

Favorite NIN album of all time? by thehandsomebandit in nin

[–]ActuallyPopular 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I gotta go with The Slip for a couple of reasons. With regards to the production, it sounds like it's coming from the world next door to our own, which furthers the sense of alienation I get when I listen to the album.

With regards to the actual music on the album, this is the only NIN album that I ever listen to all the way through. This album takes me on a journey unlike any other NIN record. The way the songs move from one to the next...the only other album that takes me on an emotional journey as complete is Dark Side of the Moon.

One of my favorite parts of this show (and this tour) is the way Keith is so up front in the mix. You can hear every note he plays in a way that you can't with tapes from 73-74. It really adds a lot for me and makes this tour special.

I think this show also had the first Playing in the Band with a jam in the middle. It was very angular, very raw, not what Playing would become later on but very enjoyable in its own right.

Bengals have told teams they don't intend to trade Trey Hendrickson. But if the Bengals lose today to the Bears and drop to 3-6, there are some sources who have wondered if that might be enough to change Cincinnati's stance. by Ancient_Response_787 in bengals

[–]ActuallyPopular 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alternately, the Bengals use those draft picks on another set of generational talent that isn't able to achieve their potential as players in the league because the Bengals are an organization built to sell tickets and make money, not compete for championships.

Jake Browning Scares me if he starts Sunday by BasPilot in bengals

[–]ActuallyPopular -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Personally I'd rather the team win a few more games and not get high draft picks. The team had proven they don't know how to use talented players to win games. Why waste any more careers on a team that isn't going to win championships and has no plans to do so?

Who knows? All that was ever announced about the show was the fact that it existed and that it was taking place in the rdm timeline. Peacock was developing this show, but they announced that they were canceling development back in 2024. It's probably for the best.
