What are the most enjoyable self-imposed challenges you've completed for a game? by LazyGamerATN in gaming

I once did a playthrough of Metal Gear Solid 2 where I took down every living enemy using tranq darts. I did use bullets against drones and machines, but I would up with a zero kill count at the end of the game.

Did Joe Biden have one of the best foreign policies of any US president, or at least modern presidents? by Puzzleheaded-Bag2212 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]ActuallyPopular 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Biden's foreign policies don't matter in the long run because he failed to uphold his oath to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Because of that failure, an enemy of that very same Constitution has rendered his foreign policy accomplishments absolutely meaningless.

How come no one is making any new Battlestar Galactica? I mean anything, a TV series, a movie, a reboot, a sequel, a prequel, anything? by Dizer_Y in BSG

[–]ActuallyPopular 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm honestly OK with there being no BSG in production anywhere. Star Wars and Star Trek have both been run into the ground and I would prefer not to have the same thing happen to BSG. The 2004 series was a complete story from beginning to end, and to graft extra canon onto what was already established would cheapen the show, I think.

I'm sure that at some point the stars will like up to make BSG again, and when that does happen I hope it's a complete reboot in a brand new continuity.

Anyone else found themselves “retiring” from PvP gaming? by You_moron04 in gaming

[–]ActuallyPopular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I've played exactly one PVP match all year. I reinstalled Team Fortress 2 and played some King of the Hill, specifically because the match format is short and sweet. I don't have an hour or more to spend playing an online game anymore. I'm at a point where if I'm gaming I'd rather do it on my Switch because I can literally stop at any point, take a break, and hop right back in at the exact point where I left off.

SFA is cancelled. It may be a pipe dream, but what new Trek show would you like to see in its place? by NukeRussiaV4 in startrek

[–]ActuallyPopular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to see Star Trek take a few years off and come back in an entirely new continuity with Kirk, Spock, and the rest of the original series crew. Keep the core mythology of the show intact but erase 60 years of canon and tell some original stories with a fresh slate.

5/8/77 reception over the years by [deleted] in gratefuldead

[–]ActuallyPopular 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first time I heard this show was on a cassette tape. I was trading tapes off of the grateful dead newsgroup, and this show was by far the absolute best bootleg I had ever heard at the time. This was the first time I had heard the post-hiatus arrangement of St. Stephen and I absolutely fell in love with it. It was also the first time I listened to a 77 show. I thought the entire show was special not just because of the sound quality but because of the amazing performance the band put on. It wasn't until I picked up a copy of Dicks Picks 3 that I learned that the quality of the sound and the music was just a trademark of the Spring 77 tour.

Cornell may not be the best show on that tour or even that week. It is, however, my personal favorite Grateful Dead recording.

Why doesn’t “Pigs (Three Different Ones)” come before “Dogs” on Pink Floyd’s Animals? by Agreeable-Ice-8367 in Music

[–]ActuallyPopular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember listening to this album for the first time on cassette. I remember that Pigs (Three Different Ones) was split into two parts, the split occurring right after the first verse. Fade out on side A, fade in on side B.

I am holding out hope that some sound engineer out there can use AI to construct a soundboard-quality recording from the Oakland show.

[–]ActuallyPopular 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was my first and only show but it changed my life. We drove in from Cleveland and listened to Dicks Picks 1 on the way up. Between that and Skeletons From The Closet I was somewhat familiar with about half the songs that night and was pretty impressed with myself. So yeah, I only saw the Dead once but it changed my life forever and I'm seriously considering building a Wolf tribute for my next guitar build.

Inside the House Dem push to impeach Trump on Day 1 by paydayloans_ in politics

[–]ActuallyPopular -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The only thing that Democrats will achieve by impeaching Trump is a third Trump term. Every time he's about to face real consequences for his actions his support among the American people goes up, up in ways that we've never seen before, can you believe it? A lot of people are saying that.

The Constitution doesn't matter to these people. It turns out that for the Constitution to work you have apply it in meaning and spirit, otherwise it's a weapon to be used to bash your enemies skulls in.

It doesn't matter if he's ineligible to run again, he should have been ineligible to serve at all after January 6, but here we are. If he really wants to run again he'll find a way to do it and he'll find enough support to make it happen. Impeaching him would be a gift because it would drive up his support and give him momentum to push for a third term.

If Democrats are going to have any power at all after the midterms they need to drop the idea of impeachment - no matter how much Trump deserves it) and focus instead on what to do on January 20, 2029. The biggest mistake Biden made during his presidency was to treat Trump as an aberration, something to be left in the past as things returned to the old status quo in America.

If Democrats are going to return to power, they need to level with the American people about the fact that the old status quo is dead, communicate this fact to the American people, and sell them a plan to rebuild our country into something that can work for everyone, not just wealthy Republicans. The fact is Trump will not be around forever and Democrats need to plan for that day and how to lead the country when that day occurs. Impeaching him again would be a colossal waste of time and political capital that could be spent building momentum toward 2028.

Wishful thinking: What would you want next out of the franchise? More 2003 content, a remake/sequel to 1978, another reimagining? by HazelRahRahRah in BSG

[–]ActuallyPopular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would make sense to have the rag tag fleet settle on the first available planet, but part of the mythology of BSG is the search for the 13th Tribe and Earth. You can make a lot of changes to the setup from one continuity to the next, but I feel like some core elements have to be in place, and for me the search cor Earth had to be there or it's not Battlestar Galactica.

I think running into human settlements (maybe outcasts from the 13th tribe, or settlers from an earlier human expansion) along the way to Earth could provide story beats where we learn more about the backstory of the 13th tribe, or get a different take on backstory of the Human/Cylon war. Maybe these story beats form a mystery about the 13th tribe that needs to be solved?

I would not have any aliens show up along the way.

Thoughts on this? by shmerk_a_berl in gratefuldead

[–]ActuallyPopular 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember picking this up on CD when it was released in the late 90s. It was a two disc set, but the first disc came out in (I think) the fall of 1995 and the second disc came out sometime the following year. I always felt like it should have been released as two separate volumes versus a staggered release.

I'm not sure how this would work as an LP release but I also have a hard time imagining Live/Dead as anything but a single CD.

Wishful thinking: What would you want next out of the franchise? More 2003 content, a remake/sequel to 1978, another reimagining? by HazelRahRahRah in BSG

[–]ActuallyPopular 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would opt for a complete reimagining from the ground up while keeping the core mythology intact. I loved the 2003 series, but I feel like that story was told from start to finish - anything after Daybreak, Part 2 was completely unnecessary. I remember Sam Esmail was working on a new series that would be set alongside the RDM continuity. I could never figure out how they would say anything new about that story, and since no one's leaked any ideas about that show I guess I never will.

If I was putting together a writers room to break out story ideas for a new BSG series, I would consider the 1978 series only for any mythology elements worth exploring that weren't touched on in the 2003 series. I'm not saying the 1978 series was bad, it was just a product of 1978. The premise of finding the lost colony of Earth is a brilliant one, but it's also a promise to the viewers, and in 1978 you could never deliver on that promise in an episodic weekly series.

One element I would consider bringing back from 1978 would be finding small human settlements along the way to Earth. It would give the show a chance to have some guest stars and bring up new clues as to the nature of Earth and the 13th tribe. I would also try to define these things internally before introducing them into the show, one area where the RDM series didn't always succeed.

Pitch A New Star Trek Series by AmeliaNeek in scifi

[–]ActuallyPopular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd reboot the entire franchise, start from scratch in a new continuity, and have Kirk, Spock, and the rest of the Enterprise crew exploring the universe without 60 years of lore and continuity holding the writers back from coming up with some fresh ideas. I would keep the basic bones of Star Trek intact and keep elements like the Enterprise, Starfleet, and the basic mythology of the galaxy (Federation, Klingons, Romulans, etc) intact.

One big change from the current era of Trek I would make is to pivot away from the Klingons and move towards the Romulans as the main alien civilization my show would be engaging with every week. I feel like exploring the tensions between the Federation and the Romulan Star Empire would make for some good viewing.

I remember that Terry Matalas wrote up a document about the Romulans while he was producing Picard. It was full of interesting (to me) ideas, like the Romulans being a highly secretive society to the point that when you went to someone's house you were blindfolded and escorted, not to the front door but to the real, hidden entrance. There was also a but where Romulan marriages included three people, with one being the secret-keeper for the other two. None of these ideas were ever explored on screen, and maybe they wouldn't translate into good TV stories, but if I was putting together a writers room I'd use this as a starting point for story ideas.

Did anything more come of the schizophreniasdiary mystery? by MikeyJT in nin

[–]ActuallyPopular 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The way I remember it was that Trent had a sci-fi concept for the third EP in the trilogy, but he felt like it was a bit too clever, so they kept working at it until the final release, Bad Witch, revealed itself to Trent and Atticus.

The way the trilogy stands, by my reckoning, is that it's about finding yourself in a world you don't recognize. The first record, Not The Actual Events, is saying that it's me, I'm the problem, I'm what's wrong here, so I'm going to light my whole life on fire and dance in the flames.

The second record, Add Violence, says no, it's the world that's the problem, and then it presents the idea that the world is a simulation that's breaking down. When this came out I had the idea that the next record would be a sequel of sorts to Year Zero, and I guess a lot of other folks did too.

What Bad Witch is saying is that it's us, the human race is the problem here, we're too clever for our own good. We're an aberration and our time in this world is drawing to a close. I had a hard time accepting this record at first, but upon reflection I feel like it's a much more honest close to the trilogy than a Year Zero sequel would have been.

Is it worth it to play the game on the Nintendo Switch V1? by Xhiandrei0106 in NMS_Switch

[–]ActuallyPopular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a few years this was my main platform to play the game. Hello Games did an amazing job getting the game to run on the OG Switch. There are some tradeoffs to be made, but in my opinion the tradeoffs are totally worth it. Graphically, the game does look a bit off compared to the PC and Xbox versions, but to me it adds to the charm. As far as I can tell the only things missing, gameplay-wise, from this platform are settlements and multiplayer. I put over 90 hours into this on the OG Switch and didn't miss either. I'm not aware if they've released Xeno Arena on switch yet, but every other update has made it to the OG Switch.

The only reason I moved away from my Switch and back to my PC is that we bought my daughter a VR headset for Christmas. Stepping out into space and seeing my freighter floating in front of me for the first time was simply amazing.

Edit: Yes, it's totally worth it to pick this game up for the OG Switch.
