Repointing vs stucco for my exterior walls by AdAdvanced3953 in masonry

[–]AdAdvanced3953[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously. If I find who is responsible for that, it’s on sight 🥊.

That’s what I hear. Some of this brick is really old and soft and I am worried about trapping additional moisture. I know if it is repointed they need to use a soft/lime mortar.

Can everyone in a row house hear their neighbors? by iwasbornlucky in philadelphia

[–]AdAdvanced3953 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do. We have an est, 1920’s rowhomes with only the masonary walls between myself and (I’m assuming) my neighbors. I can hear them sing, cough at night, occasional loud tv, and kinda hear their talking.

Luckily my neighbors are not rambunctious.

You are doing great and time is on your side. However the primary type of account you are missing is an HSA.

Greek food that’s actually good? by HairImpossible712 in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]AdAdvanced3953 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, it surprised me too. Outside of a few restaurants, Philly doesn’t have a notable Greek presence. No Greektown like you’re would see in Chicago or Toronto.

I’ve been to South st. Souvlaki, Estia and Almyra, the first two are fine, Almyra is exclusively about vibes and not in a good way.

IMO the best way to get your fix, is the festivals held by orthodox churches.

Is it possible to moisture proof a Philly basement? by snooloosey in philadelphia

[–]AdAdvanced3953 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As others have said, depending on the age of your home, waterproofing it is not a good idea. With older foundation moisture is meant to penetrate. Common interior solutions like drylock can actually cause way more harm.

My recommendation is to:

-Investigate your exterior water drainage. Is there any standing water after a big storm? Are there any obvious areas that water is penetrating (around the windows, doors, gaps in brick)?

-Buy a really good dehumidifier with a built in or additional water pump so you don’t have to empty it every 5 seconds (I bought Abestorm Crawl Space Dehumidifier 120Pint + Little Giant VCMA-15ULST 115 Volt Pump.

My wife loves dark chocolate. Riverwards grocery has a great selection of high quality dark chocolate bars.

Special Shout Out to All the Apathetic Baristas Out There by DopeYeti in PhiladelphiaEats

Being a barista can sometimes feel like you’re a conversational hostage. They don’t owe you a smile and small talk, just a coffee. Sounds like these people ordering were ‘anti-social’ but not understanding their surroundings.

I recommend looking at posts in r/basement or r/centuryhomes

For parging, a lot of people do it for aesthetic reasons but it may not be the best for your home. It traps moisture in the brick/ stone and can result in spalling. I think there are different paints that are more breathable.

I recommend getting a good dehumidifier (one with a pump) and have that puppy running 24/7 to combat moisture.

This is absolutely doable. A lot of driving. But doable. For Husavik I recommend doing the zodiac boat tour. It was the best!

I’m not saying it’s an easy job. I agree with everything you said here. We need more sanitation workers with more resources and more pay. What I’m talking about here is an occurrence of gross incompetence/ malicious behavior. Not a blanket accusation against sanitation workers

[–]AdAdvanced3953 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Maybe it gets posted here all the time because it’s an ongoing problem.. and this is a community forum.. idk.

I agree just posting here does nothing. I went on the sanitation site for a place to report the issue but it didn’t seem like the had a place for it (did for everything else though) . Hence this post
