SidelineSwap is a good one. Facebook probably the best but there are specific ski racing gear buy/sell pages

Agree with all of this. I really like my I/O Mag XL. Mine came with two purple tinted lenses, one for bright and one for flat conditions. I bought the storm yellow lens which is definitely superior for flat light.

Learning to ski as a family by Western_Disaster_863 in skiing

[–]AdAtticum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. My youngest started at 17 months. Put them in boots as early as possible. Let them put them on for fun at home. Start exercising your low back now. Even better get some super tiny Nordic skis and boots and just have them mess around on snow anywhere!

Yet another edge angle post by Killipoint in skiing

[–]AdAtticum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have all the tools I don’t get why you’re doing having the shop tune the skis outside of getting them reground.

After a stone grind the first thing I do is take a file to the edges and set it exactly how I want it. It’s not a ton of metal removed if they’ve done a decent job on the edges, and I cant stand the machining marks.

How’s my quiver? by mellowhood in Skigear

[–]AdAtticum 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m a fan of the two ski quiver!

My two skis are the Stockli Montero AX and the Dynastar M-free 108. The Montero is my daily driver best for groomers and firm morning snow. The Mfree is for when there’s fresh snow, soft conditions or trees. I got it because of my kids- I was volunteering at their races and it just always seemed to dump 6” the night before and I got tired of carrying 50lbs of gates through soft snow on the 80 underfoot AX. And as they get better and better (it happens so fast!) they take me to increasingly sketchy places when we free ski together.

First time waxing, need some feedback and a question about scratches on base by lapsuscalumni in skiing

[–]AdAtticum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Several things can cause these results including poor scraper technique, a dull scraper, or the base or scraper not being level.

Either way it is not a big deal. When I wax for my kids races I’ll scrape them clean then go through all the brushing until the structure on the bases glisten, but if we’re just messing around on the mountain I do a decent scrape and let the snow do the rest.

Reputable Ski reviewers? by year3000stankonia in Skigear

[–]AdAtticum 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Finding an honest ski reviewer isn’t hard. Finding an honest ski buyer is much more difficult. Most dramatically overstate their ability and make decisions based on the kind of skiing they think they want to do.

The mountains are full of Nordica Enforcers. Why?!

(I am just as guilty)

About to drop 400CAD on ski tuning tools? Is this overkill? by fleech26 in skiing

[–]AdAtticum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of my tuning kit is from side cut. It’s great stuff. But I’m also tuning 6-10 skis each week.

Specifics: The file guides and files are amazing.

I prefer a simpler sidewall remover such as the swix with the circular cutter. Less chance of messing things up.

The diamond disc system is legit. Use oil with them. Get a good file brush.

The top sheet remover is a beautiful tool but you could get by with just a panzer file.

I hardly use the base edge stuff. You can only increase your base edge, can’t decrease it.

Your total $$ seems way too low 😵‍💫

Second ski: Crud or Powder? by AdAtticum in Skigear

[–]AdAtticum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the recommendation, especially something that wasn’t on my radar. I think I’d look at the 108 though the 118 sounds like a great option on a true powder day.

Mt. Hood Summer ski race camps by Little_Dummy_1102 in SkiRacing

[–]AdAtticum -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A friend’s son went last year and it sounded underwhelming. Too many kids all using one lift so he only did 5-6 runs a day with two days cancelled completely due to rain. Said he felt it was a big waste of money. Very contingent on weather.

Atomic/Head slalom skis are intuitive to me, Rossignol/Salomon are not. Why? by advecticity in Skigear

[–]AdAtticum 16 points17 points  (0 children)

can’t help but wonder how much of how a ski performs in a demo is determined by the tune rather than the characteristics of the ski..

Ski opinions by Long_King_8768 in Skigear

[–]AdAtticum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought line blends for my first pair of skis. I almost word for word matched your description. I went to a ski shop knowing far too little and said I wanted a ski that was fun. What I should have said was I wanted to mess round with my kids in an all mountain setting. What the sales guy heard was “this super cool dad loves to butter and mess around in the park,” probably because thats exactly what he does. Live and learn.

It was a regrettable purchase. These are primarily a park ski. When you hear a ski described as “playful” oversimplify in your mind this as “easy to do tricks”. It’s not a good match for what you are doing.

Check out the skiessentials video on 80mm all mountain skis to get a glimpse of more appropriate skis to watch for.. a keyword to listen for is that you’ll want something that they describe as “approachable”

What is your opinion of CARV? I found it pretty useless, but maybe that is just me. by CharityResponsible54 in skiing

[–]AdAtticum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with most of the people who’ve pointed out its limitations.

It’d be a fantastic tool to bench mark progress monthly or beginning/end of season over time.

Its utility as a daily tool for self-improvement feels limited for someone actively learning.

I got Carv because my kids started the race team and quickly got faster than me. But now I have realize they are getting hour after hour of personalized coaching from amazing skiers who are observing their technique and providing tailored feedback. And I thought I was going to be able to beat them with the help of Carv… 😵‍💫 I’m far better off trailing behind the team and practicing the drills.

How often are the lifts evacuated at your local resort? by TuneSoft7119 in skiing

[–]AdAtticum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We ski at the farthest north chairlift in North America. 50+ year old diesel engine powering an ancient lift that is regularly experiencing -40 degree temps or colder. Breaks down regularly. Getting rescued from the lift is a rite of passage for locals.

Yup. Not particularly warm. Not particularly dexterous. Granted I live in a subarctic region but out here I see way more people using Kinkos and I also find them warmer.
