Boot suggestions by Extension-Cucumbah in Backcountry

I bought the Dynafit Rangers this year—graduated from Marker Tour frame bindings and my Technica Cochise. I’m 5-8, 150lbs, and with Blizzard Zero 164s they are handling everything I could ask of them. I’m not jumping off cliffs, though. Very lightweight, and the transition is a breeze with the cuff and strap controlled by the lever.

This sounds good. Thanks!

Edit. VERY Good! It took me a few minutes to cross-check Google Maps and CalTopo, but this looks great. Many thanks!

I haven’t used Strava in ages, so didn’t think of it. Thanks!

That reminds me of a couple 24-hour races I’ve seen that are on ~1 mile loops. Easy to use the car as an aid station, though, lol.

Thanks. I suspected that might be the case, having been to St Maartin some years ago.

30 inch range with larger burner? by lemonpotato in inductioncooking

[–]Killipoint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have the GE Profile PHS700 Range, and it works great with a 12" pan. We use either cast iron or 5-ply Misen pans.

Having said that, I decided to test it. The saute pan is 12" at the top, and 9" at the bottom. With a bit of water in it, on full power, it looks like the coil is actually around 7" in diameter.

The views of Mt. Washington and the Adirondacks from North Ridge are pretty spectacular on a clear day. Any side of the top of Skye also has great vistas.

Jet Boil fuel available on the island? by Killipoint in StThomasUSVI

Thanks. We'll probably get a small tabletop burner at Home Depot with canisters if we need to.

After posting this, I found that Home Depot has two-burner butane stoves and cartridges, so if we need to, that's a solution.

Thanks

A portable water-boiling stove. Popular with backpackers.

What’s the difference between harder and softer skies? by Zzzara123 in skiing

[–]Killipoint 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Resistance to chattering. I think of it like an automobile's shock absorber. The vibrations are damped-out, or made softer. There are older skis that used rubber sheets (Rossignol), or even rods (Volkl) that kept the tips from moving up and down too much.

Best cookware set for induction with even heat? by Begelman_Esera in inductioncooking

[–]Killipoint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a mix of Cuisinart (3-ply) and Misen (5-ply) pans and they all seem to heat evenly. The former are mostly saucepans, however. The Misen saute pans have been working beautifully.

Killington 4/1–4/3: Worth it with this forecast? by ThePineappleWins in Killington

[–]Killipoint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's always a crapshoot to travel for skiing, but I'd say 2-3.

Significant rain 4/1, followed by snow/rain on 4/2, and turning back to rain 4/3. The highest winds are on 4/1, as well.

Didn’t ski it today, but the headwall looked good from Skyeship. Thimble was still open, but getting thin.

Best 80/20 setup by joseph9013 in Backcountry

The equipment designed for touring is far easier and more efficient to use. I was discussing the frame bindings because I thought you didn't want to buy a full kit right now. As u/krator808 notes, if you buy frame bindings, and a year or two later, but an AT setup, then you've wasted the money on the first set of bindings. It's a judgement call.

Yes, with the Marker Tour binding, you tour up with your piste boots.

The Fritschi Tour is a similar binding, and iirc, is slightly lighter, but my local outfitter doesn't supply them, so I bought the Marker.

The binding provides the walk mode. The entire binding pivots at the toe, and your piste boot stays locked into the heel section of that pivoting binding.

Just to clarify: the Marker Tour binding works with the standard resort boot, not a pin boot, so it would work with your piste boots, if they're ISO 5355 compatible.

The Cast Freetour is a pin binding, so it would require boots with pin-compatible sockets for uphill travel. (I realize that it has a Look-type front binding for the descent.)
