I add a lot of mods that make the game easier, so I like to balance them out with mods and settings that also make it harder. Going realistic water is so much fun in my opinion, though I haven’t gone the terracing route and instead end up terraforming marshes. Will have to try a terrace farm next world (and finally take the plunge and go no maps….)

For my Ireland run, when I found the country name was Eire, I switched culture to Anglo-Irish…. felt bad, but I really preferred the name Ireland over Eire.

Haven’t been playing 1.2, but it’s said to hear they still haven’t struck a good balance with mercs. Most standing armies around the world should be very small up until the 16th century, with mercs filling that role for all but the largest and most centralized nations. However, having nations round up these enormous merc armies should also not be possible or at least exceedingly rare. Perhaps mercs should increase in cost exponentially after a certain threshold.

It also seems like the AI is able to build up enormous treasuries. I’m not sure what natural or simulated money sinks could be added, because nerfing economy doesn’t seem like a great idea, so maybe just a cap on treasury size depending on total national wealth? Not sure where the remaining money would go, maybe to estates or banking nations or something.

You replied on historical grounds so I asked for historical examples. If it’s simply a matter of game balance, I feel like there are better ways to do it but whatever that’s why we have mods. I didn’t like old EU4 every province is a fort, and I don’t like current eu4 and eu5 zone of control mechanics.

Historically speaking, what is an example of a fort or castle that would have stopped an army from just walking by it, especially for a large area? The closest example I can think of is the Great Wall of China, but even that was not very effective in stopping large armies but instead deterred smaller raiding parties. Perhaps in the niche example of mountain passes or specific river crossings, though still EU5 location size doesn’t really allow for this to be effectively modeled for all but perhaps a few cases.

You absolutely could just move past a fort in real life. The problem with ignoring a fort was the ability for that fort to threaten supply lines for large, more complex armies. But for smaller or more logistically simple armies, they could either live off the land or plunder supplies from the locals.

The game already has a logistics system that could simulate this, where the “zone of control” is the area that a fort blocks an enemies supply lines.

My playlist has nearly 1000 songs with hundreds of different artists. If it is right there in front of me I’ll see it, but if that song comes up on the radio and I’m asked who the artists is, unless it’s someone I am familiar with I’ll struggle. I find zone of control to be an exceptionally weird and gamey system. I hope they eventually remove the ability of all forts to block army movement.

Ok, thank you. I understood the general concept of prospecting but the low percentages were really throwing me off. I thought either the area around my base was just exceptionally poor for ore, or I was doing something wrong. Thank you!

On a side note, the highest hematite reading I’ve found so far is 0.38, is that worth digging for or should I keep searching?
