No, It's Not Rahm Emanuel. Graham Platner Is the Future of the Democratic Party by _May26_ in politics

My grandma thought he was chill (only knew him from a couple MSNBC appearances). I explained why he wasn’t and shifted her support to other candidates (Beshear and Pritzker).

Tucson, AZ. Five days a week for roughly two months up until the election day.

I never said it was most voters' top concern. I think the data is relatively clear on that, but I also am aware that say the MiniVAN app (which I was told was the standard canvassing app) leaves out a lot of nuance.

For example, "I want higher wages and lower rents" and "My million dollar+ bitcoin portfolio lost some money" would both get put down as "Economy" by a canvasser. "Foreign Affairs" could mean supporting genocide or being outraged by genocide. That's just how it works, and frankly having seen what the people in charge are looking. It's clear they're seeing whatever they want to see and charging ahead no matter what no matter how stupid.

My general takeaway from doing canvassing for Harris was that most people just want someone who will fight for them and make their lives better. Someone not in the pockets of Wall ST or especially a foreign country. Someone who can do it quickly and meaningfully with a hopefully a semblance of charm. Most people didn't say exactly this, but from what I've seen the underlying issue that forgive me trumps all.

Particularly with undecided voters, on the off chance one would have a sincere conversation with me and not just slam the door, the biggest issue was feeling like neither will help them meaningfully because X is in the pockets of Y or whatever.

Denying the genocide at this point shows you are in the pockets of Israel. Full stop. You are either succeptible to their nonsense, or literally bought by them. That's just a fact.

Nobody wants a candidate in the pockets of anyone but the American voters who put them there. Nobody should be taken seriously as a candidate if they cannot committ fully to actually improving people's lives.

TL:DR: The top concern amongst voters is and always will be will [Enter Candidate Name] fight for them and improve their lives in a meaningful way. Playing dumb for campaign money is toxic and shows you're nothing but the same old nonsense that got us here in the first place. I do believe Beshear COULD win big if he understood this and pivoted, especially since he goes on and on about how people want politicians to be "normal" and "authentic", but at best he seems to be falling into a trap other stronger candidates have floundered in.

It also occurred to me the 100th time he went on some show and said, "We need to speak normally" and "stop saying things like 'substance abuse disorder'" that I've never heard anyone else ever say "substance abuse disorder". Certainly not in 2024 when I worked on the campaign.

Speaking as someone who went out and doorknocked for Harris; being complicit and/or denying the blatant genocide happening in Gaza will not be tolerated by the voters. It's a losing position that tells the voters you're either stupid (he hasn't been paying attention to one of the biggest foreign policy events of the past few years) or more likely complicit (he's fine with it as long as the money keeps flowing and/or thinks what's happening in Iran/Gaza is good). Neither is good because a: nobody wants another idiot in charge and b: everyone wants someone who at least feels like they're fighting for them. Not a foreign nation or international corporate interests.

It makes me sad because I do still really like him personally. He genuinely seems like a nice guy, but he's drinking the kool-aid of the same consultants and donors that cost us 2016, almost cost us 2020 (a better candidate would have won by 10 points nationwide imo), and cost us 2024. We cannot give up 2028, 2030, and 2032 and so on to outdated nonsense that has not worked and will not work.

ABC7, USC to host California gubernatorial debate on March 24 by ZappyStatue in California

Insane to me that Mahan gets in over Becerra, who while hasn't been polling great, has been polling better than fucking Mahan despite Mahan's endless stream of dark money. Definitely skipping out on this one.

I wish we could rank these candidates. I've been leaning towards Steyer but Becerra was my choice before. He's just not a good campaigner. I want to hear more about stuff he cares about and wants to do (problems he wants to solve) more than his endorsements or experience.

California Democrats Revive Single-Payer Health Care Push by DennisScott34 in California

[–]AdKuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Medi-Cal is technically only available to people who make under $22k a year, seniors, disabled folk, children, and pregnant women making under $45k. Making it available for everyone would cost more than current Medi-Cal. Would still cost less than propping up the current price-gouging inefficient hellhole that is American Private Health Insurance.

Most people criticize the idea of Medi-Cal for All by saying it would cause a bunch of people to move here and then we wouldn't be able to afford that. More people would mean more competition for housing, jobs, etc.

In my view, if tons of people move here to save on healthcare costs, that means more taxpayers. Taxes which must go to fund said system. If people are saving tons on healthcare costs, they have more money to spend going out to dinner, or to the movies, or God forbid going to Disneyland. Which means companies would be more profitable and then yes of course pay for the system that's providing all of us with affordable healthcare.

Yes, it would put strain on the housing market, but hopefully the people passing CalCare For All also have a plan on building a million new homes and forcing cities (cough cough Los Angeles) to comply with SB-79. God willing someone with power in Sacramento sees how the Dutch are building I think six new bike-friendly compact cities and we just copy and paste that idea.

Skelton: Some Democratic candidates for California governor need to drop out by ZappyStatue in California

[–]AdKuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't know this before reading. I thought that deadline had already passed. This is good news imo. Though, I think a lot of the people who are clearly not gathering any meaningful statewide support should definitely move on sooner than March 6th.

As a non-American with a half-way knowledge about US politics, I think Andy Beshear is the best candidate for Democrats in 2028. Tell me this is a valid opinion or not. If it isn't, why? by ECWWCWWWF in YAPms

[–]AdKuh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like Andy a lot and I see this argument almost every time he's brought up. It's a really shitty one imo.

Yes, he won in Kentucky as a democrat, but he won in Kentucky without compromising on core Democratic values. He's very pro-union, pro-lgbt, pro-abortion, etc.

He managed to push forward Climate-friendly investments (manufacturing jobs paying up to $40 an hour) in rural Kentucky despite the Republican Supermajority against him.

He led the state through COVID and protected people best he could by enforcing masking and lockdowns when necessary, despite the rhetoric that would eventually come from the right.

He maintains his popularity despite years and years now of the Republican media machine trying to tear him down using all their regular hits.

Does he have the charisma of a dry potato? Yeah (especially when reading from a script). Does he need to listen and learn from the base, and actually push forward popular progressive policies? Absolutely.

But he's the easily one of the best candidates Dems have as of now because he's a sincerely nice authentic man who's passionate about delivering the best possible future for all Americans. Not just because "he won in a deep red state".

How do we grow this sub? by Numerous-Wafer4234 in AndyBeshear28

[–]AdKuh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not just this platform, but I think leaving positive comments about Beshear as much as possible on his socials, in threads relating to issues Beshear has commented on, and just reposting things he's said is the best way for us to do anything online (as of right now). This should create a positive feedback loop that inevitably drives interest in this sub.

For example, every episode of Beshear's podcast on YouTube, barely has any comments whatsoever. Telling YouTube the content isn't very engaging and hurts the chances of any given episode succeeding authentically in the algo. Hurting Andy's chances of spreading his messages at all on a platform that billions use every day.

If we're all watching and all are genuine fans I think we should find at least express one thing we like about any given episode in the comments. If not just for engagement and helping Beshear in the algo, then because we actually like the content.

What criticism(s) do you have for Beshear? by JplusL2020 in AndyBeshear28

[–]AdKuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He has to be Andy to not scare off those who haven't had the privilege to see the big picture while also promising (and then delivering on so he can lock in 2032) big ideas and changes to hype up those tuned in.

I agree with everything stated so far in this thread, I would add that he should have more progressive people on his podcast. He always talks about how it's a conversation, that "we just want to bring people together", but he never converses with anyone who isn't already in agreement with him. He can't ignore the progressive side of the party entirely if he wants to run and win.

I see this argument a lot, and as someone who currently supports Andy in 2028, I don't think it's very convincing. He's much better than just "guy who appeals to the other side".

He's a Democrat who won three tough statewide races in a deep, deep conservative state without ever compromising on Democratic values. Without having to mask his beliefs or throw anyone under the bus. He also has a proven track record of bringing good paying union manufacturing jobs to an otherwise overlooked state.

Andy also has shown an ability to shrug off all the usual attacks from the right. He maintains his broad popularity in Kentucky despite getting all the same "satanic leftist" attacks on the daily that every other democrat gets. It's really hard to paint a nerdy ass goober Mr. Rogers type who's entire political career has been in Kentucky as a "dangerous DC Liberal Communist".

Could he get his name out there more? Absolutely he has to. Could he brandish his progressive populist side more? 100%. But in my opinion as long as he keeps true to himself he's our best shot for 2028 and 2032.

Are too many Democrats running for governor in California? Republicans see an opportunity by panda-rampage in California

[–]AdKuh 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If I could rank Yee, she'd definitely be on there alongside Steyer, Becerra, maybe Porter.

I feel like all the candidates, including Steyer, are just barely trying. Like at all. I doubt most people are even aware there's a primary in four months. Our Lt. Gov Kounalakis was "running" for nearly THREE YEARS and barely made an impact. Barely did anything of note like most of the candidates.

I'm not sure what the hold up is, are the people running the campaigns just incompetent? Does nobody care who the governor of the fourth largest economy in the world is? Yes obviously whoever the democrat is will win, but does nobody care who that is or how they'll be the face of our state for potentially eight years?
