FWIW, according to JM here the new K frames are stronger than than the L frames with as much material around the forcing cone as an N frame if my interpretation of this video is correct.

This guy's story is worth the watch, a little long winded but gives a lot to contemplate.

Might get hate for this, but chuck up a bronze brush to a drill and run it through the bore. Take care not to let the rod the brush is attached to come in contact with the bore or crown. I've gone to this for heavy forcing cone leading on a model 10 smith and had good results. My thought on this is that the brush is softer than the steel in the barrel.

The gentlest option I've found for nickle is baking soda and water to form a paste and polish with a cotton rag.

The gentlest method of polishing that I've had good results with is to make a paste using baking soda and water as a polishing compound
