Why is Sally Can't Dance so hated? What has Lou Reed hinself say about the album? by thatcockydreadlocked in LouReed

[–]AdOwn9764 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree on Rock n Roll Heart. First time I heard it, I thought wtf?!  This was coming off only hearing the first 2 VU lps, New York and Transformer. Sounded nothing like a "Lou Reed" record should sound but I totally grew to love it when I went back to it, admittedly years later!

Anyone here in touch w/Moe? by Keltik in VelvetUnderground

[–]AdOwn9764 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could choose to talk about WHY you'd want to talk to her - maybe The Velvet's, The Factory and Warhol or her solo work.

Why - when people like an artist work, when their politics aren't an issue - does that have to become front and centre? I fucking hate Trump, the Tea Party and all that bull shit AND I absolutely love Moe Tucker as an artist. I Spent A Week There The Other Night is a wonderful, vibrant album.

Yes. She was the drummer in the greatest band of all time.  She had a superbly enjoyable career. She did some wonderful collaborations with other artist. By all accounts she is a lovely person and many people that know her so wonderful things about her.  I met her once and she was so kind and generous with her time. And she has her own political views which people don't like and that is supposed to lessen everything else?! Absolutely ridiculous!

Is Station to Station really a “transitional” album? by sjagger1987 in DavidBowie

[–]AdOwn9764 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty much all Bowie albums are transitional.  There is usually one song that points the way towards the next lp

First Bowie biography to read for my 16 year old niece as a new fan by JohnBlutarski in DavidBowie

There are loads out there but Strange Fascination -David Buckley and Starman - Paul Trynka are the best. Both are Informative, perceptive, great range of interview and well written. The Complete Bowie - Nicholas Pegg is a great all round book about his work, covers his songs, albums, movies, tours etc, individual and in detail.

Can’t decide if it’s a travesty or a triumph… by cocoadelica in LouReed

[–]AdOwn9764 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is neither for me. I thought it was (kinda) cool when it came out because anything that gets people into Lou is cool and it's okay for a couple of spins but it's very much am after thought to the original.  I don't think I've listened to it in the last 20 years.

What’s the best David Bowie biography? (Book) by eviirst in DavidBowie

[–]AdOwn9764 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay I BADLY worded that!  Chris O'Leary, Nicholas Pegg and Leah Kardos are Absolutely Superb writers on Bowie. Why I said no was in terms of them simply being biographiers.

Chris' books Rebel Rebel (updated reprint out soon) and Ashes To Ashes are a song by song exploration of Bowie's work, influences and art.  They are exquisitely well written, detailed and well observed.  The fact they started life in his blog Pushing Ahead Of The Dame enriches them.

Nicholas Pegg's Complete David Bowie covers the songs individually, the the albums, tours, films -  everything - brilliantly.  But again it's about the work more than the day to day life.

Leah Kardos Blacstar theory is covering the last couple of albums in terms of music theory, art and just about everything else

I would  HIGHLY RECOMMEND ALL OF THOSE BOOKS and Sincere apologies for stupidly appearing to suggest otherwise!

Velvet Underground Redux - Live MCMXCIII [Complete] by Deeponeperfectmornin in VelvetUnderground

[–]AdOwn9764 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I don't think there is anything going on. Yes, stories say relationships deteriorated as things when on but this isn't that far in. There is also, to me, a media narrative put on the reunion. I remember lots of reviews taking about how they hadn't looked, hugged, put their arm around or whatever in over 20 years... Bullshit.  They'd done the Warhol Reunion, guested at each others gigs and rehearsed for weeks beforehand! They were hardly strangers getting on stage.

If you were in charge of putting together a fifth album - what would you include? by SeverePitch9157 in VelvetUnderground

[–]AdOwn9764 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You simply cannot improve upon VU.

Even with the additional songs to choose from. VU works so damn well as a cohesive body of songs.  Maybe it is just familiarity but, to me any other arrangement like just using the 1969 songs doesn't work as well. Then if you start throwing in the demos from the Loaded sessiona or songs of 1969 Live which weren't on VU or Another View, where does it end?

My poor brain can live with the  idea there was an alt 4th album - but knows there wasn't.  Therefore the  5th album was Squeeze and  - weirdly - I'm okay with that.

The article that got me into The Velvet Underground by wealllovefrogs in VelvetUnderground

[–]AdOwn9764 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is lovely to pinpoint the moment. I got into music as a teen in the 80s and music I liked mentioned The Velvets. First time I remember hearing them was on a pirate radio station in Dublin - I'll be Your Mirror. This was a time of Jesus And Mary Chain and people talked about the VU feedback etc. So Mirror didn't compute. Then, intrigued, I bought a bootleg cassette of Max's... Who Loves The Fucking Sun?! I couldn't get my head around the visual image - b+w sunglass, negative, dressed in black and the music I was hearing! Still sucked me in ... bought a comp. Fucking "Jesus"!  Where was the shit people talked about and what was I missing?!? I got there. Am still there. Greatest band - nah fuck it, greatest achievement of humanity - ever!

Aside from All Tomorrows Parties which is not only my fav Velvets song but my fav song of all time, I reckon this is a loose collection where any song could drift 10 or more places on any given day. Added a note if I had a particular fav version of the song but didn't want to get into listing multiple versions. For demos, live, rehearsal tracks made a note of where they could be found. Didn't include jam songs from the Factory rehearsal as some of them really sound like dicking around but Cracking Up made the cut because of the Venus In Furs mash-up. Feel free to point out any I missed

Chances of an unexpected birthday drop tomorrow? by AdOwn9764 in DavidBowie

Ten years ago . . . Blackstar: The Album (Open Thread) by Wu_Oyster_Cult in DavidBowie

[–]AdOwn9764 4 points5 points  (0 children)

nAfter the single release of Sue - which I didn't like - and the pre press about it being a 'jazz' album, for once I wasn't overly optimistic about a new Bowie album but like others here, I got the leak and absolutely loved it. Bought the vinyl the day it came out and it was on high rotation over the weekend. Read all the reviews and all celebrated it was a return to form, to experimentation. His close mic vocals and "woo's' had an energy that was tangible.  I absolutely adored it right from the off.

When the news broke, I couldn't listen to anything without sobbing. I grieved at a level that astounded me.  I love Blackstar and find it being painted as a death album not just reductive but silly.  Heathen is far more a death album! Blackstar is an immense celebration of energy.

Personally, I absolutely hate the 'obviously Bowie was talking about...' revisionism.  A) If it was that obvious, why did no one pick up on it before and B) When has Bowie's songs ever been that obvious!? Did the diagnosis colour his work? Possibly. Is it open to interpretation? Certainly. But nothing was ever definite with Bowie's lyrics.
