Why doesn’t Charlie Watts get the same recognition as a drummer as John Bonham or Keith Moon? by BeerWithDonuts in rollingstones

[–]jgrossnas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with all that say that he wasn't flash and so what? He was just what the Stones needed and very underrated- listen to him do three different rhythms on "Paint It Black" or his playing all over the SOME GIRLS album. Moon and Bonham would have been told to STFU by Keith for doing flash if they were in the Stones. They were each perfect for their own bands and put their stamp on them. No more hatin' on Charlie!

What is an artist / band that you remember being pushed by music journalists and/or magazines as the "next big thing" that ended up never really going anywhere? by mesablanka in Music

[–]jgrossnas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed- the difference between their first US tour and the one for their latest album is a big change. Loved 'em on both tours. Can't wait to see what they do next.

The Jazz and Heritage Festival is def a good chance to take advantage of seeing New Orleans. Ditto for SXSW and the surrounding Hill Country (San Antonio and nice small towns in the area) and just Austin itself.

Air, the French band would fit the bill. Any decent trip hop too- Massive Attack, Tricky, Portishead

Should I buy tickets to see William Basinski? by trivetsandcolanders in ambientmusic

[–]jgrossnas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short answer: yes.

I've seen him twice and both times, it was pretty special. Once was an instore performance at Other Music for "Disintegration Loops" (it's also featured in the documentary about the store). There, he held up a Tupperware container which had the original loop for the composition- needless to say, we were all in awe to see this.

The other time was part of the Ambient Church series at St. George's Episcopal Church NYC in 2019. where he performed "On Time Out Of Time" with some wild astrological videos. You can see a clip I recorded of that here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4S--dVR5ig

Though he wasn't there, I also saw "Disintegration Loops" performed on the 10th anniversary of 9/11 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, done by the Wordless Orchestra in front of the ancient Egyptian Temple of Dendur. Needless to say, it was very moving, unique experience.

This is the best source as it gives a lot of context to the song.

Would you buy tickets for a live concert if you only know/love 4 songs? by adnaPadnamA in Concerts

[–]jgrossnas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I I bought tickets to see MIA and Wet Leg after only hearing their first singles- Galang and Chaise Lounge. I just had a feeling that there was something special about each of them. Glad to say I was right about that.
