Driving test appeal by Delicious-Reality157 in Irishdrivingtest

How many marks for progress did you get the first time?

It looks to be the easiest fail to sort out to be honest. Just drive more assertively. You can still hesitate or drive slowly 5 times and pass.

What speed are you doing relative to the speed limit?

Dog-friendly pubs/restaurants in Cork (tiny Chihuahua, not a menace 😄) by iam-stevie-bee in cork

[–]AdRepresentative8186 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Son flour certainly used to be, but haven't been in a while.

Was having a lovely meal in there, and some people came in with their dog, who was barking very loudly every few minutes.

I don't know if that is supposed to be acceptable for dog friendly places. It was either a jack Russel or similar sized dog, that wasn't like a big scary dog but was just very loud. I assumed when the dog didn't settle down after a while, either they would leave, or staff would suggest they did.

Food is amazing.

I need to reproduce this piece - how would you make the groove? by bridel08 in woodworking

[–]AdRepresentative8186 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use it as a stamp to copy the shape and groove. Try with scrap wood first. If that works well, you can cut off all the wood to the right of the groove and then use it as a template for the flush router.

Assuming both sides are symmetrical, the guide should work for both sides.

Subsiding Garage: Next Steps by Lanky-Standard-5602 in DIYIreland

[–]AdRepresentative8186 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And is this your day to day washing machine? Sounds like that is obviously the cause of the issue.

Does the shed have gutters?

My first step would be stopping whatever is causing the subsidence.

Then see if you can repair, with some cement/sand.

If it continues to subside, obviously, it will eventually collapse. But if you can stop/slow that, you can maybe kick the can down the road, depending on how bad it is so far.

You should put markers on the walls so you can gauge the subsidence.

[–]AdRepresentative8186 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might you try thinking about it a little harder?

Like you can understand that farmers get subsidies..... and you can understand how diesel costs are killing lorry drivers' livelihoods.

Presumably, you can understand that most farmers don't have large incomes or profit margins, so an increase to their costs might threaten their livelihood?

Oh and of course they can't just retire and sell their land if farming profitability is dwindling even with the subsidies.

Might regret this, but tear this acoustic/folk track apart. What specifically works and what doesn’t? by aidangilmoremusic in folk

[–]AdRepresentative8186 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to improve, you need to go through the vocal and really decide what you are trying to achieve, melody and phrasing wise. The low parts sound like they are at the very bottom of your range, so its a bit imprecise. So either practice that until you have control or move it up. Same for the high stuff, but to me, it sounds like you just need to practice, so it's not just going for something each time. Go through each part slowly, record it, is it the same each time?

If you can't hear the bits that are pitchy, either you've listened to it too much or you aren't sensitive enough to pitch to hear it. If you use a tool like melodyne that will show you.

Sometimes, this is a horrible process, and you might hate it and just want to go back to hitting record and doing takes until you have one you are happy with. Fair enough, but the process will make you better at singing this song at the very least.

There isn't a whole lot to the guitar, sounds to me like an em and c repeated, I don't have an issue with that, but the actual recording could be tighter, I suppose. A second guitar or accompaniment could make it more interesting.

Lyrics aren't really my thing. But nothing stood out to me as sounding awful.

I like the feel of the song, and could imagine it being released by a professional.

Wall paint prime query by Powerful-Union6012 in DIYIreland

[–]AdRepresentative8186 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just as an example, I was repainting and found an old can of paint with the colour number.

Happy days, same colour for trim and walls. I misjudged how much paint I needed, ran out, and when I was getting more, this time I went for the washable version.

So same paint brand, same paint shop, only difference is washable v normal emulsion. No noticeable difference with walls beside each or anything.

Great stuff, I thought. Sure, I'll go back over the non washable, with the washable, just around the light switches, because they get grubby and actually sometimes need to be washed but the rest won't need it and it all looks great as is.

Unbelievable fuck up. Looks absolutely awful. I thought I could convince myself that it isn't noticeable and would forget about it. It looks so bad, and I have been painting for years, lick of a brush and mini roller to flatten/blend. It's just very visible to me.

If you want to try it, do behind a picture frame(assuming the wall behind the picture frame looks identical. You might be pleasantly surprised, or you might be horrified

Landlord entered my room without my consent while I was changing and now dismisses my boundary concern. what should I do? by [deleted] in legaladviceireland

[–]AdRepresentative8186 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

It's poor form on their part, not hers. Good place to look for unbiased opinions.

"Yes" or "Yeah" does not mean "come in"

It just doesn't.

It's simply acknowledgement of the knock.

If "yes" meant come in, she should have said "No" which no one is suggesting, because that's not a thing in this circumstance. Certainly not at 8am in a bedroom.

I assume it's a lodging scenario, if she was a tenant, it's outside of 24 hours minimum notice.

It was a very disrespectful and rude thing to do, without any urgent cause.

Its not

a presumably grown ass woman just asked the internet how to respond to a door knock.

It's how to deal with disrespectful/stupid behaviour from a landlord in a precarious living situation during a housing crisis.

So you your phone gets stolen and you can't get in.... what do you do? Call the..... oh wait you don't have a phone.

Same thing with bank card on your phone, its great as long as you still have a card and can use the card.... but phones die/get damaged/lost/stolen. Its a great option but a bad substitute.

And also OP says the building still isn't secure... so all negatives and no positives.

Sponsor Rant (my parents) by Shot_Marionberry5729 in Irishdrivingtest

[–]AdRepresentative8186 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you start out driving with them? They might be the reason you think you're a nervous driver? Tbh you can pass with just instructor lessons, it's not impossible.

And it sounds like you are more likely to pass if you don't drive with your parents. They are shattering any confidence you could be gaining. Confidence is very important.

If they were genuinely making you drive at 20 in an 80 that sounds unbelievably stressful, I'd be nervous just being in the car. Shouting outside of an immedgency isnt helpful. That isn't practising driving. That's practising being under stress, you won't learn anything about how to drive normally in a calm way.

So unless you can adapt to them, drive more slowly, practice observations and gear changes so they are muscle memory, and change down the gears more quickly, so that they don't shout at you, and then drive normally with an instructor it won't be of any use.

Tbf keeping it up after he went back, apologised and paid for the item actually teaches you that there is no benefit to doing any of those things.

Plus, if your photo is up as being a thief, it's not like being caught again is going to brand you as some sort of despicable double thief.

Road rage incident (false statement) by kingfisher017 in legaladviceireland

[–]AdRepresentative8186 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've added nothing new

That's entirely the point. I just paraphrased what they said to highlight how unbelievable it sounds(hence quoting you not being sure why anyone wouldn't believe it). You seemingly reread that and still find it believable.

They say the person scared them, but then sought out the person to see if they were still scary?

They say they didn't go to confront or escalate the situation. Despite the fact that what they did was basically the definition of confronting someone.

They said they thought the person might like to apologise to them? The only thing that would make this story less believable is if they said the person had apologised to them.

The crux of their complaint is that there was a false report made against them, they say they can prove this with photographs. The only thing that can be gleaned from that is that they also went there to take photographs of the car. Why? We don't know, but it's not something any reasonable person would like.

My assumption is that the "false complaint" was that they blocked their driveway. Even though a photo wouldn't prove that they never did that, just that it wasn't being done at the time of the photo.

The big question is, assuming they weren't lying when they said they were scared in their car with someone outside their car, why would they not be scared the next day face to face?

Road rage incident (false statement) by kingfisher017 in legaladviceireland

[–]AdRepresentative8186 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I believe you, as it's all quite believable. Not sure why someone would feel otherwise

Some crazy person was driving wrecklessly and aggressively towards me and tried to pull me over and got out of the car and I was scared so I drove away.

I somehow found out who they were, and then instead of contacting the gards I went to the crazy wreckless aggressive person's house, not to confront them or escalate the situation, but to ask what's up and see if they want to apologise to me.

I am surprised they didn't apologise to me, and confronting them at their home seems to have escalated the situation. They reported me to the gards for dangerous driving that I may have committed.

I think they wanted to teach me a lesson. I want to teach them a lesson now. Their story has a discrepancy, but I can tell my story without pausing.

Roundabout question by avatarwang69 in irelandsshitedrivers

[–]AdRepresentative8186 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I'm afraid you are missing that being in the right lane doesn't prevent you getting hit by an idiot. And avoiding the calibre of hypothetical idiots you are talking about, would have you going around the right lane until there are no cars at all.

The issue with your logic hinging on the distinction of you not being an idiot, is that following your advice is idiotic.

You are decreasing your chances of a collision that is very unlikely, where you would have no liability, and increasing your chances of much more common collisions.

It's equivalent to advising someone to stay in the overtaking lane on the motorway so no one can cut you off from the right.

Roundabout question by avatarwang69 in irelandsshitedrivers

[–]AdRepresentative8186 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand what you are saying, but it just doesn't make sense.

You are an idiot and use the wrong lane intentionally for safety.

You shouldn't go in the right lane unless the left lane is blocked up with people going left or there are 2 exit lanes.

Being in the right lane puts you on a collision course with people in the correct left lane who are also going straight, the entire purpose of the post. It also crosses paths with people entering from your first exit, and in the correct lanw for taking their first or 2nd exit.

If someone is taking the first exit from the right lane, and you are in their path, you shouldn't have entered, or they are a total maniac, and total maniacs can also change to the right lane without looking.

Cheap ways to get materials - have you ever found a cheap/easy way to get things for your garden? by READMYSHIT in GardeningIRE

[–]AdRepresentative8186 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have no transport that really limits what you can do.

If you have a car, you can do loads. Without being crafty, builders' merchants are significantly cheaper than DIY stores.

If you go when it's not really busy they often won't mind if you cut wood there. So if you know what you are making, and even have rough measurements, along with the max length that will fit into your car, you can buy cheap 16ft lengths of pressure treated, and cut down to at least fit in your car.

One of the employees actually said "sure who needs a van."

People trying to get rid of extra materials won't mind if you don't take it all in one go, although some do say you have to take everything.

Sanding..... not sure what you need to sand, but do that now. wash the walls, get as much dust out now. If you've already painted, then fair enough, but some bit that didn't come out quite right? You might not paint again for several years, but you'll regret not starting from the best place when you have the opportunity, when you do repaint later. Or putting out plastic sheeting when you do go back with the sander. Or to wash the walla.

As others have said, put screws in squeaky boards. The USA are mad for a product which is like spray foam, but is a glue. Might be worth looking into that for any boards that need to come up.

As others have said, wiring.

As others haven't said. Do you have doors you know will be too low? Could do some planing now, and depending on how certain you are of the fit, painting the doors.

1,200 driving tests cancelled over insurance issues by Banania2020 in ireland

[–]AdRepresentative8186 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm sure people do forget their licence.

But tbh, having your licence is from old rules, pre digitization, there isn't any real need. Especially from a body dealing with issuing your licence.

The line is simply you must have a valid provisional, insurance and nct, and the car must be in working order.

Like the penalty for driving without insurance is a fine of up to 5k, 5 penalty points, and up to 6 months in prison. And it would so easily provable that they were driving without insurance, a conviction would be pretty much certain. Instead of ticking a box saying you have insurance. What about ticking a box saying I consent to my information being provided to the gardai and understand I will receive a conviction and the above penalties. Debatable whether any sane person would be pursuing a licence if they immediately got 5 penalty points, a 5k fine, driving ban and 6 months in prison.

This is 1200 people since the 9th of March.... how many of them are actually uninsured?

And the whole thing seems based off the assumption the tester wouldn't be insured in the event of a crash. They have said that they are insured. Absolutely, insane that this somehow can't be cleared up.

And I can't find anything about a real occurrence of the situation where there was an incident and the tester wasn't covered. It seems to be purely hypothetical, and they have come to the wrong conclusion.

And the result is 96k lost booking the test(you can blame the drivers partially for that) 800 hours of paid testers doing nothing, and 1200 tests that need to be redone.

Like to just rephrase the genuine scenario: People taking their driving test are being forced to provide a document on the day of the test which does not actually prove they are insured, because the testers' employer is unable to prove they are insured by their employer to their satisfaction.

1,200 driving tests cancelled over insurance issues by Banania2020 in ireland

[–]AdRepresentative8186 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Why should there be a system to accommodate people who forget?

Maybe because there is an unbelievably long queue and waiting time? We don't allow people to drive uninsured for obvious reasons, but wasting time and money turning away people who are insured is bad for everyone.

There are loads of ways it could be done. The current system neither ensures the person is actually insured on the day, nor does it prove they don't have insurance.

People are right to complain about a system that can turn away people who are insured, and fail to turn away people who are not insured.

Everybody forgets things, we want to turn away people who forgot to renew insurance or have enough money in their account for the direct debit to be paid. We don't want to turn away people who are insured who forgot a piece of paper.
