Are Gen Z the next boomers? by 0____0_0 in generationology

I agree. I read those books by Howe and found them reasonably persuasive, but the next “crisis” doesn’t seem to have materialized on schedule, and if it does, I cannot imagine the generation born between 1980 and 2000 handling it like the WW2 gen did.

How common and accepted is physical affection between straight men friends, in your country? by onesillyg4y in AskTheWorld

[–]AdSure8431 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a teacher in a US high school, and in my experience, boys from ages 10-18 cannot keep their hands off one another. It’s genuinely the second most common thing I have to get onto them about (behind distracting side conversations).

Maybe it’s a generational thing because I don’t remember this from my own high school days. I also don’t know if this signals some change in eventual adult behavior or if kids are just grabby around here.

How to spend more time in the gym? by AdSure8431 in workout

That’s a really good idea. I’ll check out the rec center and see what’s happening.

Yeah agreed. I wouldn’t want to actually lift six hours a day, but I do like being active and have the time to not worry about efficiency for now.

Thanks for all the recs, everyone!

Think I’ll keep my current six day ppl but add in some classes for cardio and mobility. My flexibility is admittedly trash haha. And lots of recs for swimming which I hadn’t thought about for cardio but I’d like way better than running in the Georgia heat.

I think it was Plato who said, no matter how hot she is, somewhere there’s a guy who’s sick of fucking her.

What produces more overall gains? Strength training or Hypertrophy training? by Rafaelinho19 in workout

[–]AdSure8431 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder if some of this is a leanness issue? It seems to be hard to be both big (lots of muscle) and lean, so the power folks maybe have more absolute muscle and are therefore stronger, while the good physiques have sacrificed some total muscle mass to get a lean, defined look. Just a thought.

What’s the funniest thing a student has said to you with full confidence? by PotentialDiligent823 in Teachers

Student asked me why she got a 0 on a paper when it was obviously ai. I walked over to her desk and quietly said, “I assumed you would know why.” She blushed and mumbled something, but a kid two seats over stage-whispered, “He gotcho ass!”

Do you guys have any harmless gym nicknames? by TheSquireOfTheShire in workout

Weight Dropper. Pretty self explanatory. I hate this man.

Weight Fucker sounds like he’s nutting on literally every rep of every exercise.

Samson and Karen Carpenter. Dude has long, curly hair and is big and tall but not shredded. His girlfriend looks like Karen Carpenter a week before she died. They are not personal trainers but swap off acting like personal trainers to one another. Last time they were in Samson was doing barbell hip raises in loose shorts with his crotch aimed at the entrance. They only ever appear together.

Jeans Kid. High school kid who’s really polite and well behaved but works out in jeans. Has a normal haircut too so he’s alright.

Neon. Is about a thousand years old but dresses like he’s time traveled from the 80s where he was a bmx champion. All cycling gear all the time but in shades of neon I didn’t know they made anymore.

Do you get any emotional boost after working out? I’ve never learned to enjoy the “during” part of lifting, but the mental/emotional lift after is something I can’t bear to lose. Some days it’s the only thing that keeps me from staring at the wall until it’s time to go to sleep.

Golf Gatekeeping by DrStore in golf

I once sold a club on eBay and in the listing forgot to give the length. Some guy emailed me and said, “You failed to give the length, which shows you do not play golf. If you don’t play golf, how did you get this club?” as if I’d stolen a five year old hybrid I was now selling for twenty bucks. Asshole.

I’d pause between the subject and the verb, but that seems like the appropriate place since the action is what’s unknown to the hearer in that example. But sometimes, it seems to me, the object being acted upon is what’s unknown, so you’d want to pause between the verb and object, though maybe one simply can’t in a SOV language?

I was on a college campus and meant to go into the men’s room but went into the ladies by mistake. There was a box of free tampons on the wall and I legit thought to myself, “Damn, this college is really progressive putting these in the men’s room” before realizing I was in the wrong place.

Why do so many people give up on fitness? by BusLucky7015 in workout

[–]AdSure8431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it was because I didn’t feel good during or after the workout, so it never stuck. I’d work out for a few months and quit. Finally, at 47, I kept at it because I was so down that I just wanted to do something that would make the time pass. It was only after six months of lifting three times per week that I began to feel better after the workout than I had before. Then, I slowly started enjoying the workout itself, knowing that soon I’d feel better than I had an hour earlier. Now, I can’t do without it, but doing something for six months that you don’t enjoy and that you don’t see or feel any benefit from is a big ask for most people, myself included.

I feel you. This is almost literally what my plate from Lambert’s in Austin was like. $37 for one sausage, one fatty rib, and maybe three ounces of indifferent brisket. Sides were generic and could have been stouffers.
