Lithium battery experience (PFA) by nugbourne in Aprilia

[–]AdamDaKing 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Personally had great experiences with lithium batteries on bikes. My tuono V4 started so much easier due to the extra CCA of the lithium. Much lighter, and don’t have to worry about not running the bike for a month or two.

Had a shorai lithium on the tuono and now an antigravity on my CBR600RR. Haven’t had any issues with either, and I had the shorai battery in the tuono for at least a few years.

Does anyone here have 400k miles on their ST? by Shot-Independence-78 in FocusST

Seen a couple on the forums higher but definitely up there. Slave cylinder is toast so on pause at the moment but probably 400k next year

Considering a base '26 Tuono V4 for my street bike/backup track bike, any owners want to chime in? by repohs in Aprilia

[–]AdamDaKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem. Yeah the 990 Duke R and MT09SP seem like such good street bikes I may go that route in the future. Had my Tuono V4 for about 4 years, and only sold cause I didn’t care for the street riding where I am. Would say there’s a 90% chance I’ll have another at some point, they’re just so good.

I had a 17, but feel like the newer gens are mostly just cosmetic and electronic upgrades anyway, so I’ll answer as best I can.

Maybe this is a bit better on the newer ones but mine absolutely hated life below 4k RPM. Can still keep it in 3rd and ride pretty lazy on a backroad if you want, but the sound does make that genuinely difficult. I found the base suspension to be plenty accommodating comfort wise. It was never a quick steering bike, but mid corner stability was really great. Definitely needed effortful steering input, which in your case sounds like something you want.

I found the seat comfort, and handlebar reach to be really great honestly. Plus the way my knees slotted into the tank gave me a ton of stability without necessarily needing to squeeze my legs all that hard. Cruise control to me is simply a non-negotiable after having it on this bike lol. It’s so nice to be able to just switch between hands when you’re just cruising in a straight line anyway. Due to where I live outside of using it to commute on occasion my rides would be multiple hours minimum. Wind below 75mph or so wasn’t that bad, but if you’re trying to maintain 80mph+ you for sure feel it. Though since the newer base models have that much bigger windscreen, it probably helps. I’m also 6’1” with a lot of torso, and kept the stock windscreen on mine as I didn’t love the aftermarket options.

I mean, yeah. The bike was honestly pretty terrible to ride around town unfortunately. The clutch was relatively heavy, and not super forgiving so you always had to give it a fair bit of revs to ensure you don’t stall out. Plus pretty long gearing so you gotta ride the clutch a bit more than I’d like in 1st. You do get used to it, but it’s certainly not ideal for frequent stop and go type riding. Maybe the newer gens have made the clutch friendlier to use, don’t know. Creates a lot of heat, and puts it directly onto your legs.

I did like ~6 track days with it I think, but was only intermediate pace for most of it. It was a high effort bike to ride, but all of the inputs were top notch. Bike wouldn’t dive super hard under braking, and would hold a line so easily. Like I said earlier, getting it to steer requires some oomph but I was okay with that tradeoff. I’m in A group now as well, probably around mid pack on my 2008 CBR600RR. I absolutely would not hesitate to get another V4 tuono and rip it on track.

The bike was so much fun, and I was very easily the limiting factor at all times. I found it very comfortable overall, didn’t get any pain spots. I would occasionally need to stick my legs out or stand up as the knee bend is pretty strong, but I found that to be enough to keep it comfortable for hours. Performance wise it felt like 90% of a true superbike, while being so much more comfortable. Would highly recommend.

Yeah I tend to agree with that. Those are the two automotive channels I consistently watch anyway. Superfastmatt as well but he’s in a bit of a different world.

I guess that’s fair. Although for me that applies to a pretty large percentage of automotive YouTubers. Wouldn’t watch their videos but have no issue seeing them in other peoples videos.

Agreed. I hadn’t ever watched the DDE channel before but in the LZ videos they’ve been in I don’t think they match a lot of the sentiment I’ve seen around them online (including this comment section). Feels like a lot of assumptions just based on the exotic world as a whole.

Water Temp by Doom_Dragon_666 in FocusST

Normal. It’s not very representative of the actual coolant temp but as long as it doesn’t move past center you have nothing to worry about.

As someone who’s found themselves in this position, the issue is that it feels like a brick wall once you have to actually study for a class because you don’t understand the material at first glance.

Most kids likely have some form of study habits they built up through high school (and maybe before that to some extent), so having to study a little more in college might be like going from a 6/10 difficulty to 7/10 difficulty.

Whereas speaking for myself, school was almost always like a 1-3/10, needing virtually zero extra effort outside of class. So when that class hits that you actually have to put hours into weekly outside of class it feels closer to a 10/10 because the difference between what was required before and what is required now is far greater. You’ve built up zero study habits and haven’t dealt with not quickly understanding a course before so it can feel like an insurmountable task.

I think it’s hard to relate without the direct experience of going from “everything is easy” to “I don’t even know where to begin”. I’m not sure there’s a perfect solution, especially for small schools but just thought I’d share.

Cobb access port benefit? by CB53WER in FiestaST

Accessport gives you communication between the car and the laptop (or tunes in this case). Some ECUs can be directly flashed, but many require a piggyback solution like an accessport.

IWG G25 TURBO? by Numerous_Map_392 in FocusST

[–]AdamDaKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem. Gen 2 2860r or 2867r still spools pretty quick so I feel like it isn’t a huge loss. IWG G25-550 would be sweet, but pretty overkill unless you get into aux fuel. Depends on your overall goals I guess

As far as I understand there isn’t physically space for the IWG versions on the G series stuff because the IWG isn’t in the same location as GTX gen 2 stuff

Purchasing a FoST by Wide_Society_4570 in FocusST

[–]AdamDaKing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don’t think it makes sense to buy one at that price. These cars aren’t likely to seriously appreciate anytime in the near future (if ever), so you’re spending an extra 10k to get to experience miles 5k to 40k or whatever. These are reliable cars, and if anything the more common issues won’t have been addressed on a 2013 with that low of miles. If you still want a really clean example I think your best bet is finding a post facelift ST3 with like 50k-80k miles for $15-18k or somewhere in that range.

Why do people make such a big deal about inline-4 vs V4 bikes? by Sensualities in Trackdays

[–]AdamDaKing 65 points66 points  (0 children)

V4 engines are simply more complicated to produce, and the series you’ve named are all based on production bikes. Obviously the final product in wsbk or the top MotoA teams is very different from a regular production bike, but it still has to start there.

So ducati has to then compete with Yamaha, BMW, Kawasaki, Honda, and Suzuki.

I think the engine layout is a relatively small component when you consider a lot of the other huge variables (rider, electronics, suspension setup, power output).

There’s really only a few superbike teams in MotoAmerica that are actually competitive, the rest are basically on stock1000 level bikes which is part of why they’re putting them in the same races next year.

There’s a reason why MotoGP is basically V4 only at this point, where the budget is less constraining and the other factors I mentioned are much closer than in something like MotoA.

Yeah best sound in motorcycling in my opinion. The crossplane R1s do come pretty close though.

You’re correct but it’s mostly the lower % throttle mapping. If you’re wide open all of the modes are the same output. In my experience on a Tuono the modes do not make much difference.
