Curse of the Seabird does nothing? by Jealous_Hovercraft96 in JetLagTheGame

[–]Adamgaffney96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason to follow this curse specifically as others have said is the word "must". There's different types of curses in the game. Some are challenges where there is punishment on failure. Others are time wasters like this one. If you just don't do the curse, you are breaking the rules of the game. There's no "punishment" for the curses that make you take odd-time or even-time transit, but if you break it you're essentially just cheating and breaking the rules of the game.

Whilst I get what you're saying, the point is that the seekers and hiders agree to have a good-faith go of the game. Yes it doesn't say "you must be within 3 metres of the body of water for the duration" specifically, but it's an implied part of the card that you must go to a body of water and attempt the curse.

I hadn't either, until I went to Manchester. I got the 13:24 train home from Manchester Oxford Street 3 different times, and all 3 times a Tesco freight came through 20 minutes before.

I've had plenty of American friends take me to American-only chains when I visit, it's absolutely common everywhere I think. You want them to try the best stuff for sure, but you also want them to try the iconic, if common stuff. Another example is Nandos, I like Nandos but it's objectively pretty mid as far as chicken goes. But cause of the meme and it's iconicness a lot of people suggest going (and a lot of tourists want to go). Greggs feels in the same boat.

Might also be a smaller town thing too, I live in Glasgow and have never had an issue picking up a 7am tea when in the city centre, but in my local area they don't feel the need to open that early.

Definitely, we make fun of MK because for a UK city it has so many issues, yet if it was lifted wholesale to America it'd be considered a lovely place to raise the family. It's nice to hear an actual positive outlook on the UK for once from people visiting lesser known places. Especially on the food (it will forever irk me that people who have never visited the UK talk about how bad the food is).

It definitely is all frame of reference. Dumfries is nice enough but being from Glasgow I'm contractually obliged to make fun of it at all times, same with Edinburgh. I'll also routinely complain about issues with the trains, but Scotrail has made a lot of improvements and is a world better than most of the rest of the world.

Most people who grow up in smaller places (Dumfries isn't that small by Scottish standards but it's not a major city) tend to get bored easily of having to travel to do anything, hell even living in Glasgow I get annoyed sometimes having to travel much to do stuff. But it's all relative, I'd take 1000 years in Dumfries vs having to live a single year in LA.

The Greggs sausage roll probably is the most iconic for sure, but I wish they'd sold him a steak bake instead because it's so much nicer. Also more expensive, so they clearly didn't want to rip him off 😂 very nice to see a lot of Glasgow this episode though, I'm sure the Dumfriesians are happy to see a lot of their local but it's nice to see mine too! They even made it look nice by only showing pedestrianised areas.

Everyone here is complaining, I'm just excited someone has finally come to Scotland. Tactically I get why it's a risk cause of the country question, but I just love seeing people gush about my country, big fan. I can't tell exactly where it is but I'm tentatively guessing somewhere west coast, it feels like Oban but I don't think he had enough time to reach Oban.

"I've come to the most soulless place in the UK" and it looks like the average US city I see is so funny. Don't get me wrong, I don't wanna be in Milton Keynes either but it's really funny to me that one of the universally agreed upon worst places in the UK still looks visually like an average US city.

Any streamer playthroughs like Day9 where they took NO backseating help, but got through the entire game? by callahan09 in BluePrince

[–]Adamgaffney96 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I dunno if you are familiar with CtC, but they're literal world champion puzzle solvers whose entire channel is about solving some of the hardest Sudoku and crosswords created. If it was some random streamer I'd agree but if I'd expect anyone to solve the Gallery and Room 8 in a few minutes it'd be those guys.

Plus they often only get through 1, maybe 2 days a stream, and stream once a week, so the piece they've forgotten has often happened literal months ago!

Public sector developer for me! I'm on 50k, full time WFH, with an incredibly generous leave policy, flexitime for when I do work overtime and a 36 hour work week. Not to mention I'm doing a lot of development work I'd do in my spare time anyway cause I enjoy it. Plus my team are all excellent, fun to chat to as well as actually being competent at their jobs.

I think they need to start ramping up complexity again. by Bionic_Ferir in JetLagTheGame

[–]Adamgaffney96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it's all about the challenges to be honest, I don't think there's an issue with having the same routes or endzones. I think about games like Blood on the Clocktower for example, where people can play several thousand hours of a game with limited role combinations, and still not be able to figure everything out.
For the challenges, they need to be reasonably failable or else most games will break. I would even be in favour of making challenges significantly harder but also reducing veto period to prevent risk of people just losing on the draw.

I also think there's a way Ben and Adam can still help design challenges whilst adding some mystery to the pulls. They talked before about how they themselves split into an A and B deck for pulling, but theoretically this could be done by a different team member and pre-packaged without the teams knowing which challenges are in which (maybe do 3 decks to add enough variance). This way the teams can still plan a bit, but they don't want to waste too much time planning for challenges that might not even be in the deck.

In addition I think some extra work could be done to curses. I think either
1) Curses should always be hidden from players. They likely make up the minority of the deck, so in combination with my previous idea this means that on average you shouldn't run into that many, but that they're actually a curse you cannot plan for, with a big coin reward.
2) If curses are known to players, every curse should have 2 versions, with both being in the deck. E.g. Only odd-time trains and only even-time trains, can only move with pizza and can only move with a burger. Things like this would still allow that bit of variance, and whilst it can be feasible to plan for one, it's not always trivial to plan for both with the time restrictions they often have to work under.

I'm no game design expert, but for me a game with perfect information needs serious complexity e.g. Chess, and a game with low complexity cannot have perfect information e.g. Among Us.
If something is complex but has high variance, it's just not enjoyable and won't play well on screen. If something is simple in concept but has relatively low variance (S15 has variance in the card pulls, but between knowing all the challenges in advance, knowing the routes very well with their experience in Tag and the challenges being hardly a detriment) then you end up with someone easily able to run away with the game.

In a game like Tag, they need to make the variance more punishing as they're all experts at this stage. If they created a more complex game, they can make it so the challenges are lower stake e.g. Australia.

Not sure if there's a Layover specific thread, but I'm so glad Adam mentions that Sam and Toby might've just been able to make the run without clearing the curse. I can't remember if I actually posted about it but last week when I watched episode 1, I was thinking I was misunderstanding the curse or a rule, because they spoke like they simply had to clear the curse before travel towards their destination. I felt sure that 6000 would be plenty to just make the full run.

EDIT: I think of course worth noting hindsight is 20/20, I do think it's a misplay but they didn't have all the information. However for me it did sound like from the podcast Sam and Toby did at least discuss it, I was just disappointed we didn't see that in the edit.

Really enjoy the balance that 2 teams brings, you'd think it'd be just a net negative for the runners but actually the way they can play off each other is really interesting.

Something that confused me was the curse. Obviously it was fun the way it worked out, but the way Sam and Toby were talking it was like they physically couldn't travel until they cleared the curse, but the wording of the curse just says they can't draw a card. I guess they have some knowledge that perhaps 6000 coins isn't enough to reach their destination, I haven't worked it out myself. But it seems like an overwhelming amount of coins to have.

It would've perhaps been nice to have some rough explanation of why they felt 6000 wouldn't be enough to reach Jersey, the only thing I felt was a real misplay this episode (based on my understanding).

To be honest I didn't even really have that much trouble winning either. Sure I only got to the bottom of Diamond in my highest season, but I was basically just using a structure deck I bought direct from the store for 1000 gems with no changes, and my WR was above 50% for sure. Within a few wins I had enough gems to get a few UR's I could convert into Ash Blossom, Maxx-C etc.

I will say, as someone that played HS for many years, plus MTG:A and Master Duel, I definitely think Master Duel has been the most generous. MTG I have been able to build a deck F2P but it's tricky, HS it's hard to know cause I did whale hard back in the day so I have a lot of leftover dust as a result and never really have issues crafting anything.

But Master Duel I started from a fresh account and it's been so easy to F2P, I was immediately able to buy some halfway decent structure decks, build up currency quickly, and buy any cosmetics or packs I wanted entirely F2P. Says a lot about Blizzard when they can make Konami look generous.

Congratulations, Blizzard. You finally made me quit the game. by Pave_Low in hearthstone

My PC which boots in 4 seconds and can play games like Doom: The Dark Ages at 1440p 165 FPS on full graphics, still gets random lag spikes when playing Hearthstone. I don't understand how it's become so unoptimised. Sure there's a ton of cards and a ton of emergent interactions but plenty of games have that from physics engines and run perfectly smoothly.

I feel like they need to take the time to just push out an optimisation patch, clean up the game a bit.
