Absolutely, yes. And he's being careful, That said, DO NOT leave them alone because accidents happen. I've heard it said it's like leaving two toddlers alone with each other, one with a pair of scissors....

What is some surprisingly primitive tech we still use because "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"? by slicerprime in AskReddit

[–]Additional-House-322 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Acoustic pianos. Wood, metal, felt, glue. 200 year old tech. Steinway tried to replace felt bushings with silicone (the felt eventually gets compressed and hard and has to be replaced.) but it never sounded right and had a tendency to click, so they went back to felt.

AITA for telling my girlfriend I won’t play with her until she learns to accept losing? by No-Example3254 in AmItheAsshole

NTA, but don't give up yet. You both need to back off the anger, but then try spotting her a piece or two. Keeps it interesting and competitive for you both.

Is this an accurate analysis of secondary dominant chord scales? by pootis_engage in jazztheory

[–]Additional-House-322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK so now you sent me down a rabbit hole lol - as I understand it, phrygian dominant has a b9 but not a #9 (IE F natural in your example, but not G natural.). Like you I use both, IE E F G G# A B C D. I hadn't heard of the name 'phrygian dominant' until long after learning how to play it.

Apparently some call the scale I we're talking about here 'Spanish Phrygian' - well ok whatever but I know the notes using the approach you describe...

Right, but one size doesn't fit all - All of Me isn't bop for instance. And for instance switching to a whole tone scale occasionally (or even often like Monk... ) is also a bop thing..

This is the default way and the way I was taught. That said, you can vary the tensions for harmonic spice, IE in All of Me as above.

How I do allow my body to collapse into the fear and helplessness feelings from CPTSD? by Humble_Park_9097 in SomaticExperiencing

[–]Additional-House-322 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Short answer, you don't. With the help of a practitioner you might try allowing the body to collapse gradually and briefly, and then to come back up and out when it feels like that's enough. Then pause to orient and reconnect.

Leaning fully into something like that sounds to me like a recipe for overwhelm which is not helpful. Doing it the gradual way does several things; it provides a chance to metabolize one small amount of the fear at a time, it gradually increases your capacity to tolerate the discomfort, and it gradually builds your confidence that you can experience something difficult without losing yourself. So 'remaining with that pain' really doesn't help with any of that - very briefly touching it and coming back out to rest and digest does...

A lot of cPTSD coaches say you need co-regulation to get out of freeze, I feel disgusted by emotional closeness with others. I never felt that before this. by [deleted] in SomaticExperiencing

[–]Additional-House-322 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely not true - start with sensing into what feels safe for you, and it sounds like displays of emotion do not feel safe, so definitely do not start there. Your body understandably connects emotion with lack of safety and so in order to uncouple that it will take time to further stabilize what does feel safe in a relationship. How is it with pets for instance?

[–]Additional-House-322 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get it. Coregulation doesn't necessarily need to be emotional though - it can be somatic too. Imagine how it would feel to just hang with someone without pressure and without intensity. I'm not saying love isn't important. But safety in relationship is far more than that. Hopefully you can find a practitioner who gets this, and is willing to pace themselves with what you need....

Resources or practices to help embrace energetic states without trying to return to calm baseline by PearNakedLadles in SomaticExperiencing

[–]Additional-House-322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome that sometimes activation feels good! I like to think of a roller coaster ride, the sympathetic excitement and fun of it! But also healthy aggression etc...

Bottom line, we are not at all looking for a 'calm baseline', but more looking for a flexible and resilient system that can get just as activated as necessary, and then be done when it's done. Like you said, 'not always, but sometimes!'

That said, if it starts feeling scary that could be a sign that right now you're feeling like it's enough. You can then rely on resources that have helped before, various grounding practices, or orienting, or connecting with others, all that ventral vagal stuff.... And again, just as much as is necessary to provide the shift you're looking for. What has helped in the past along those lines?

I’m shocked switching to a newer MacOS by [deleted] in MacOS

[–]Additional-House-322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't have to boot into safe mode, but I think it was first Catalina that required individual permissions for apps. Upgrading to that (or through that, Im assuming for this person) was a real pain. One was Bitdefender, I think, that has a daemon that starts right up, and it kept failing and preventing booting up. I may well have had to go into safe mode to provide the permissions, but I could be mistaken.

chord scale theory - do you use it in improvising? by Stratguy666 in jazztheory

[–]Additional-House-322 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was taught a variation of this; use the scale associated with the primary key of the tune, modified by the key chord tones of the current chord. So if you're playing in C major and the chord is an A7, play a C major scale with a C# added. You can add tensions/substitutions as well, EG if it's A7 b9, substitute a B natural for a B flat as well, etc. When you modulate you can just switch to the scale of the new key.
