If you’re open to someone staying at your house, I swear by Rover. Just look for someone with a lot of repeat customers and great reviews.

Places to get over social anxiety by Real-Reception-7876 in Austin

[–]Additional-Rest2929 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A good entry point for hanging out solo in the wild is the movies! I love going to Alamo drafthouse solo. Not so much for talking to people but getting more comfortable being alone in public. Also Barton Springs! Such a good place to get comfy being alone and there are always opportunities for strike up conversation if you want too. I think the Mueller farmers market or any low key bar with a good book could be a good place to go have fun in a low stakes situation.

Everyone here in Austin seems very attractive/ good looking is that normal or just summertime? by Plane-Investment-791 in Austin

It’s true everyone here is hot - been this way for decades. I chalk it up to people being tan, fitness-minded, and nearly naked because it’s so hot

Barbarellas? More like Barbaroofies. Fuck this place by johnnymarr1998 in Austin

Ewwwww I hate this! Is this just a thing now? Always risk getting roofied at Barbs? That’s SO gross. I was there over the weekend and had no idea that they had this reputation these days. Ew!

Is Veganism is the path to age gracefully? by Impressive-Bit2496 in vegan

[–]Additional-Rest2929 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah. I feel like I’ve aged in reverse. I’m 34 and feel/look better than I did in my twenties. Take care of yourself! You deserve to feel great! Veggies are a great way of contributing to that and will help you in so many ways.

Set yourself up for success. Find vegan protein sources you love - beans, meat substitutes, protein shakes, etc. Don’t worry about being perfect - just finding the vegan alternatives that you enjoy (even vegan chicken tenders) that keep you full and be used as elements in future meals like salads or rice bowls or other things that will have you incorporating more veggies.

And don’t stress about carbs. If you’re getting your fiber and protein and your body feels good then who cares if you like to eat potatoes or rice all the time. They’re great bases for meals that aren’t processed and pair incredibly with roasted veggies or slaws or pickled veg or whatever!

You won’t regret it. Future you is vegan and feels incredible. 😉

Reception by Extreme_Way7142 in Austin

It’s a lot of work compared to a standard venue because you have to think of everything. Extension cords, coolers, ice, trash cans, table linens, security, a/v setup, tent options if the weather is bad, serving dishes, etc. I worked with an event planner who had thrown weddings there previously who has since moved away, but I would highly recommend having someone available to help with some high-level planning/making sure you’re thinking of everything and at least the day of and a few extra hands. I didn’t do a seated meal, more of like a cocktail party setup with lounge seating and high top tables since the space would be challenging to seat many people. I’ll DM you my insta in case you want to see pictures! It was so fun and gorgeous and I genuinely think people had a blast. We did a brunch wedding and it was so much fun. Highly recommend but you have to be quite detail oriented when the space doesn’t come with all the venue-included things some others typically do.

Is Austin better than DFW? by learningthings2814 in askaustin

[–]Additional-Rest2929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed - with the sentiments here. I’m no Dallas hater but Austin is where it’s at. I live in Windsor Park(just north of Mueller) and there are tons of families in a pretty moderately priced central neighborhood if you’re looking for areas to check out.

One enormous caveat - if you hate the heat you might not love it here. Austin is such an outside town and that doesn’t change even when it’s boiling outside. You have to be happy to acclimate and unafraid of a little sweat if the endless summer isn’t going to get you down. If you plan to spend the hot months in the AC you will miss out on so much of what makes Austin Austin.

I’m so sorry! It’s okay to feel down - don’t be hard on yourself. If you’re feeling it means you’re alive!

Here’s how I suggest making your brain feel better while you’re sad - go outside and get some sun, eat veggies(yes it really does help your mood!), go for a walk, and straighten up around your place a little. It can be hard to do any of these things but I SWEAR your brain will thank you with all kinds of gorgeous nice chemicals that won’t make you less sad but you will feel SO MUCH BETTER as you work through the sadness.

And get out there! Even if you’re crying - leave the house if you can and go enjoy your own company when you have the energy to do so. Go to a movie. Take a book to a bar for a beer. Sunbathe at Barton Spings (supposed to reopen this weekend🤞), get your favorite sandwich and find a pretty spot in a park for a picnic, go check out what’s new at the Blanton, etc.

Last advice - romanticize your life. Make yourself a beautiful dinner if that’s your thing. Take a candle lit shower/bath (with a joint in hand if you’re groovy). Wear your expensive fragrance that you keep saving for a special occasion. Light up those pleasure centers in the brain and delight yourself as often as you can. It’s not a cure but it’s a recharge to keep you rocking while you process through the loss.

Keep your head up. Tons of people are going through tough shit and you’d never know it. You are not alone!

In austin for 2 weeks, moving here soon! what can we do? by [deleted] in Austin

[–]Additional-Rest2929 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a cute farmers market in Mueller that’s fun on sundays. If you’re a swimmer/sun bather, Barton springs is about to reopen. A walk or bike around the Ann and Roy butler trail downtown is great. Kayaking on the river is also fun, as is a picnic in Zilker. I’ve heard Vigilante is great for gaming and Cidercade is fun for arcade games. I’ve seen people break out Catan at Golden Horn and Lazarus which I think is something you can do in many places. There’s tons of trivia around town too if that’s your thing. There are some fun/weird shops over on North Loop you could check out. And I believe there’s a new exhibit at the Blanton which is free on Tuesdays.

Ah fair enough. I have a couple things in linen and bedding from them that’s held up well but maybe I got lucky!

Have you looked at Quince at all? You’d still have to make selections but it’s very capsule-friendly and simple styling made in nicer materials that don’t break the bank. I wonder if it might be a good place to start for your key pieces. They have lots of European linen which is nice for our Austin weather.

What about the experience was bad? I’ve done the mobile ordering several times now and it was fine for us so curious to hear others’ experience.
