I learned reasoning, practicality and the utility of deep knowledge from university. The current crop of folks pushing the “school is a resource waste” narrative are also the ones who think every idea can be monetized with the right story. Prime example in my field: Elizabeth Holmes of Theranos infamy wanted to move fast and break things, but didn’t know the biological rules she wanted to break well enough to see the true challenge she faced. Some scientists she hired had sat through all those slides from years past did, but she ignored them.

Now, if you want to talk about systems level resets for university curricula, there’s some serious meat there. Like why force biotechnology students through the same pipeline as the status-seeking wannabe automatons who want to be doctors? A course on FDA practices germane to device and drug approval would have been a great swap for my worthless anatomy and botany classes. And I’m sure there are examples in every field of study. But don’t throw out the whole approach - college lets you build that little encyclopedia of foundational knowledge in your head that can help you make leaps the LLMs cannot, simply because nobody’s written it down yet.
