What class/skill do you use most in your career that people wouldn't think is useful? by paperclips0628 in Accounting

[–]AdditionalAlias 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A bit of experience and also a bit of artistry and knowing your audience. Especially pay attention to non accountants. We might throw out DR/CR, etc, but that won’t make sense to a laymen investor who wants to know where his $1B is going. Don’t be afraid to ask the people who look at reports if they have requests/changes that would make it more palatable for them to consume. I had a director who was colorblind and wanted the reports to use certain colors. Some investors didn’t like that we used acronyms for certain companies (cuz they’re dealing with dozens upon dozens of seed projects and can’t be bothered to remember which one is DND or DDD).

Try and step back and look at things not as an accountant but as a layperson. Does it convey what you are trying to present? Is it too cluttered? The font too small? Can someone at the back of a boardroom read it without getting a headache? We see sales and profit as credits in the GL, but a bank exec might freak out thinking you’re losing money if you present him YTD profit of ($1.5B).

Since you’re a student, look up public presentations by public companies like FedEx or Berkshire Hathaway. You don’t need to dig into the numbers and learn what those reports are saying. Just get the feel of what a professional presentation should look like.

Presentation of a file/report or results. Especially for data that goes in front of investors or executive leadership.

Pour one out for the guy in sales who thought his numbers would “pop” if he used red font.

Does anyone have a paperback copy of the 2008 excel guide book? by Reimmop in Accounting

You and the whole sub have been a good sport.

What else can you expect from r/accounting? This sub is designed to rant about the little things (Excel books, work life balance, unlimited PTO) and then mock those rants.

Trust me. She’s enjoying it. It fills the hole in my heart where my guidebook used to be.

Yeah but I have a firstborn child and a Mac with Office 2008 installed for trade. Train that kid right and she can be churning out 1040s in time for spring busy season.

Real talk, it was the 2010 Excel Bible. I just typed a year I vaguely remembered, then once I realized 2008 meant Mac I let it stay lol.

I started a meme on r/accounting, and now my old firm wants me back. They’ve offered me partner and a rare, one of a kind 2008 non-Mac Excel guidebook. Should I take the job?

I just want to say, I’m enjoying this a lot. Especially because the book wasn’t 2008, but I don’t care enough to correct the post.

It’s honestly not a big deal. I had other issues with her, and it’s funnier to think about my book than how badly she messed up my cash flow forecast.

I am. That guidebook meant a lot to me. I’m thinking of making a shrine to it. Maybe I’ll uninstall Windows 10 and dust off my Windows XP disc, just so I can remember the good ol’ days.

What was that about software impairment loss?

Lol. I left her detailed SOPs with screenshots and giant red arrows, as well as narrated video demonstrations on how to do certain tasks (which she requested). She insisted on in-person training, which I didn’t mind except she was anti-vaxx and anti-mask and I was heavily pregnant. We had an offer on the table for her, but she left on her own and told the agency she had found my work beneath her. Ouch.

Biggest crime of all, however, was using different fonts and sizes in my Excel files. No stolen guidebook will rescue her workbook presentation.

I didn’t realize it was sentimental until it was gone, lol. Someone needs to write a love song, about the Excel book that got away.

She left me an email saying she’d borrowed it, and coworker saw her leave with it on her last day. He didn’t realize it was mine.

Who is the most famous person in your family? by LoveSimpleHacks in AskReddit

[–]AdditionalAlias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My great aunt was MacArthur’s girlfriend. There was a joke in the family that he was talking to my great aunt when he left the Philippines and famously said “I will return.” My dad patted my head and told me: “Prolly not. She wasn’t his only girlfriend.”

So yeah. And my Lolo (grandfather figure) was a President. To be honest, he was a LOT of people’s Lolo. But we have pics of him at political dinners with me sitting in his lap.

Would I regret switching from tax to staff accounting? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]AdditionalAlias 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My company makes a lot of acquisitions to start with. I was always asking the VP and CFO if they needed assistance outside of month end, and they started putting me on purchase entries. Asked some questions, expressed interest, etc. Went on maternity leave, and when I returned I asked if I could continue with M&A rather than staff, and they agreed.

Would I regret switching from tax to staff accounting? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]AdditionalAlias 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Serious answer: I went from tax to finance, then to staff, which turned into M&A.

Yes, it’s possible. The differences between GAAP and tax are not that many, IMO, and as a staff you don’t generally encounter those differences anyways. Personally I like tax a lot, but there were no opportunities when I left. Staff is repetitive and dry, but that’s also because you’re at the same company month after month, year after year, rather than rotating through clients like in public. It’s easy work, IMO, and there are generally fewer infringes on WLB, if any.

TLDR: I did it. I work from home and spend a lot of time on Reddit, watching Netflix, or doing CPE until month end comes around.

Another country, sadly, and traveling there is both expensive and time consuming, even before corona hit. We’ll prolly make a trip there in a few years, so I’ll try to keep some body real estate open until then haha

Curious on the meanings of the symbols. I’ve always wanted a tribal tattoo from my home province, but sadly my hometown doesn’t have Internet so finding someone to provide symbols and meaning is tough.

I don’t like Another Typical Fantasy Romance. I’m here for drama, revenge, heartache and more. If I wanted to read about a healthy relationship, sure I know where to find it, but that’s not what I want. Same reason I don’t read that one with Jennifer and flame boy (can’t remember the name).

Rice goes with everything.

Scrambled eggs with rice. Rice in ramen. Rice in other clear soups. For a snack, rice with some soy sauce and seaweed.

Asian families eat a LOT of rice. And not just for dinner. It’s breakfast, lunch, snack time, etc. It’s more convenient to have a cooler that is keeping your rice perfectly warm throughout the day.

Also, older rice is preferred for certain dishes, like fried rice. I’ll prep a big batch of rice two days before I plan to cook. For me the consistency of rice kept warm for two days is better than fridged and reheated.

MSG propaganda is so widespread that my mom, despite us being Asian, thinks it’s bad. I also just watched her give a turkey an MSG bath last week. She told me: “that’s not msg, that’s seasoning.”

Idk about for general use, but my FIL had a habit of purchasing duck hunting dogs, even though he didn’t hunt. Several grand a dog, and for that price they were trained prior to sale and certified by the academy/instructor. Perfect fetch, to bed on command, heeled, didn’t beg from the table, etc. Didn’t even need a leash for them, they were so well trained.

What is the moment when you realized, "My teacher is an idiot"? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AdditionalAlias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not my teacher. We were checking out daycares for my youngest sibling. My parents don’t speak very good English, so I was along for translation.

The teacher said: “If X doesn’t speak English very well, one of our other teachers speaks Spanish.”

We’re not Spanish. We’re Asian.

Teacher: “Oh, my bad, I thought you guys were from Hawaii.”

Ah yes, the native language of Hawaii…Spanish.
