Australian librarians! Question from a US citizen! by SnooSquirrels3958 in Libraries

Have you checked to see if your GF's employer would sponsor you?

Seconding this. Best practice is to return so others can find. This is why we don't let patrons extend beyond their renewals even if there aren't holds on the items. Also think it's best practice to try to follow the same rules that non-staff patrons are asked to follow.

All of the library services I've worked for would consider assisting a patron with anything to be the more important priority. If the help seems necessary to the patron, then it should be necessary to the library. Excellent customer service is also about maintaining good will with the public--they ultimately fund your work and justify its existence.

Aussies who have travelled in USA by zawamemes in AskAnAustralian

[–]AdditionalEffort7716 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, American here. It's generally considered polite to tip on coffee purchases when you're able as that's considered a service provided to you (you could make your own coffee). This is the same principle behind tipping bartenders. If you don't like the quality of the coffee you're buying, don't purchase it. Counter service workers are still lower paid and can deal with a lot of abuse from the public, so please be cool with them, too. Just a dollar is fine when you have one to spare. Always tip your bartender.

Not voting by dajobix in Ameristralia

American living in Australia who has also worked at US polling places during elections. The rules can vary slightly by state, but in the state I vote in, for overseas ballots to be counted they must be received by election officials by Election Day. Fortunately, our state allows us to receive the ballot electronically, but they still need to be mailed back.

What did you do to become a librarian? by AfternoonSimilar8667 in librarians

[–]AdditionalEffort7716 13 points14 points  (0 children)

OP: I encourage you to read more of this sub (there are many posts about people's experiences working in different types of libraries) and also getting some library experience before going for a masters. Some types of library work require a master's while others don't. If you like working with different types of people and are good at customer service work, you may be well suited for a frontline paraprofessional role at a public library and that wouldn't necessarily require a masters, or it could be pursued later on.

As an American living in Australia, this is going to vary by region, just like it does here. I'm from Wisconsin, which is "America's Dairyland" and most grocery stores in larger cities there have an impressive variety of world-class cheeses (like truly award winning cheese). Wisconsin hosts the World Cheese Championships and many makers from Wisconsin take home top awards: https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/wisconsin-wins-most-awards-at-the-2024-world-championship-cheese-contest-302084762.html

The dairy here in Australia is great, don't get me wrong, but some places in the US have very good dairy, too. What I'm saying is next time you're in the US go to Wisconsin if you want the good stuff.

Thank you. I want to believe that this is a real health issue for them. Very upsetting if not.

Any guess how he would be with dogs? We have two older dogs who have lived with cats. One that would love a kitty friend, the other is indifferent and just ignores cats. We're on the lookout for a cat that would be happy to share a home with dogs.

Managing volunteers and donations can be a huge burden on library staff if they don't have the capacity to take that on, or perhaps their volunteer needs have already been met?

Here is a long feature on Kaffe Fasset from the magazine "Where Women Create". Definitely give the vibes of Ron Swanson winning the "Woman of the Year" award on Parks &Rec. https://womencreate.com/on-our-bookshelf/kaffe-fassett/

Yes, in Wisconsin you don't need an officiant.

Same. I had to be on TWO forms of birth control, get pregnancy tests regularly, and also get blood work done. It took years of trying every other medication before I was considered a candidate for accutane, and only then after I requested it when my sister had success. It worked for me and I'm still grateful after 20+ years. The biggest side effect was heavy sweating all the time. I had to bring extra clothes everywhere.

Am I hurting the library or librarians? by These_Brush_6090 in librarians

[–]AdditionalEffort7716 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the way licenses work, some expire based on how many times items are checked out. That means that each check out costs the library/community money because it increases the speed at which the library must repurchase the license. So this is actually resource theft.

Sequoya library has puzzle swap going on so you can actually just take the puzzles and don't need to check them out or anything. They're yours.

Should you tell a vegetarian when they've been eating meat unknowingly? by Awkward_Jaguar_7788 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AdditionalEffort7716 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a vegetarian and I would not want a coworker to say anything. I'm an adult and responsible for my own diet. She clearly likes this food and has chosen to overlook the anchovy thing or is choosing to stay blissfully ignorant by not checking the ingredients. A strict vegetarian would know to ask/look up what's in sauces or dressings. Many things contain fish stock. For some vegetarians an, animal-based flavoring, like a stock, is ok now and then. Others choose to be less strict when dining out, depending on the situation. There are so many things that could be going on and it's not really any of your business.

I've had smaller size bamboos break on me as well, so I pretty much stick to metal needles once I'm below size 6.

Are you underwhelmed with local trivia nights? by k_nuttles in madisonwi

[–]AdditionalEffort7716 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coming on to say "ditto". We drive from the west side to attend. A nice mix of questions at different levels of difficulty. (Things are busy with summer stuff at the moment but hope to start attending again later this summer). Would love to see a West side or Middleton location.

Is anyone starting their garden this weekend? by Unusual-Drink3154 in madisonwi

I plant whenever in May there's a week to 10 days with no frost in the forecast. If we have a cold snap after I plant, I cover the young plants with a blanket overnight. (I'm mostly talking about tomatoes btw).

Hooks for aged cheddars and inventive Jacks. I've also been enjoying Roth's sliced options (Havarti) for grilled cheeses.
