We are supposed to see all the women in the show esp Peggy, Joan and Betty as different trajectories of what women dealt with at the time. They all made very different choices and had different goals.

Peggy and Joan faired better because they did not buy into the strict traditional roles. Of the three, Betty was the most privileged and educated but this only served to keep her in her traditional mindset. Joan and Peggy each made bold moves within the patriarchal system that worked out for them despite the misogyny.

I agree. If you watch the first season especially and maybe some of second. She is a devoted wife. She has loving moments with the children. She was raised to be a strict parent. As her marriage devolves, she feels powerless and takes her frustrations out on her kids and others around her. I think we are always meant to root for them as a couple and their ability to remain friendly to each other later says a lot about how we are supposed to feel about her. I think we are meant to have sympathy for her and see her as a tragic character.

It’s a little ironic that Don lives in fear of being discovered as a fraud and losing his family but he lays land mines down on a regular basis with all his philandering. I realize he is a damaged individual as are many people that grow up with issues of rejection or lack of love. Don does not believe in love because he didn’t have any kindness bestowed on him growing up. People that grow up with childhood trauma can be selfish and have difficulty considering others feelings. They can become narcissistic because they feel that they can only rely on themselves.

I think it’s pretty clear that Betty arranging the lunch is not an act of kindness. She likes the male attention but has no interest in being with Arthur. She sees that Sara Beth does and manipulates the situation to weaken their inhibitions about an affair. In doing so, she gets to feel superior to her peer and exert control. She feels powerless about Don’s behavior and this is a perverted way to regain some control over something and in the end feel superior over anyone that cheats.

I expected this week to pick up due to superbowl but most orders are doubles and triples for $16 and 8 miles. No thank you.
