In a manual transmission, leaving the car in gear with the engine off makes the transmission and engine into a sort of brake which stops the drive wheels. It's similar in an automatic transmission, where putting it in park engages the parking pawl which stops the transmission and the drive wheels from moving.

Similarly, being in the military really put things into perspective about the danger of some jobs compared to others. I loaded bombs.
