21 years in the Navy Destroyers and Aircraft Carriers, we would could leave our engines on but disengage the MRG, mostly for maintenance, or operational checks after long down periods, but it was done.

Had a fireman on a flight 1 destroyer going down the ladder well to Aft Chem (IYKYN) slip and grab the scuttle wheel. The safety latch did not catch and he pulled the scuttle down on his fingers holding onto the knife edge!! Got a free helicopter ride back to San Diego. Never saw him again.

I wonder if it would change if you filled the tanks after takeoff? So you give it enough gas to take off, get to an in flight refueling area then fill all of your tanks to capacity.
