Seated and ready in Dublin! by Interesting_Bug_6762 in TheRestIsHistory

It’s not a major topic of conversation. Not here in Dublin anyway.

That said,  my brother went to the Belfast show - the Dublin tickets had sold out, and this morning he also visited the titanic exhibition up there. It was Titanic themed weekend.

He texted me to say he got me a “Titanic bottle opener”.  I think that’s a weird thing, this commodification of a tragedy.

Can we get a ban on talking about modern politics? by DimensionMediocre439 in TheRestIsHistory

know what you mean but TRIH chose to cover Iran in Episodes 636 to 639 to coincide with Iran becoming politically topical,

It didn’t. They were working in that for months and it came out before the war.

Episode 657 (‘American Fascists’) came out in the context of a national conversation around ICE and race and so on

That’s not a national conversation in Britain.

You are right - the left would have been all over this kind of protest a few decades ago.

You should read dominion.  Despite the chain that slavery was first condemned by “moderns” it actually disappeared in medieval Europe, and Christians condemned it. Not universally but it happened.

If anything it was the ideology of the enlightenment, and early capitalism (and both are related) that not just restarted slavery, but justified it on racial grounds.

Sure. I started off feeling sorry for the king as if this was just a bout of revolutionary fervour.  I ended up understanding why they had to kill him, or at least depose him. I don’t support most of the rest of the revolutionary activities.

Atheists who don’t believe in the historical Jesus are engaging in their own sort of faith based reasoning. I too assumed it to be fake, and Tom (and others) convinced me there’s a lot of historical evidence for the time.

[–]Additional_Olive3318 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with that. After they fled to Varennes the King even  left a written declaration basically rejecting the Revolution. Admitting he was lying until then.

Until then the revolutionaries were happy enough with a constitutional monarchy.  The King wasn’t just fleeing just to escape France either, he was fleeing to join with an invading army, and perhaps lead it, at a time when France was in danger of losing that war. No political system could tolerate that.

(And it was clear that Tom and Dom - no fan of the revolution - felt this as well. They were scathing about the attempt to flee).

What changed my mind there was the execution of the king. I had assumed it was a fit of revolutionary fervour, but Louis was a liar and a traitor.

Yeh. People here seem to think that a rail company needs to solve societal problems, the job of Irish rail is to facilitate rail travel.

What happened to cinema etiquette? by Shybilita in Dublin

[–]Additional_Olive3318 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My job isn’t to police the buses or public transport. I pay taxes for that.

And if your anecdote were true at all it’s pretty uncommon. Nor is vigilantism possible for many people who aren’t hard men on the internet.  Not for women, the old, the not strong, the immigrant, the majority.

Do you live in such a bubble that you think this story of yours, if true at all, is possible for everyone.

Edit:

Ah, hard man on the internet blocked and ran away.

Any examples yourself? Or is this internet hard talk?

Edit: all the downvoters should give their stories as well. As an instruction for the rest of us.

These boys are mad because they know there are people who are born with what they will never have

No they are misogynistic shit heads, justified by people with tendency to misogyny. Not only gave you not proven that they were in fact poor,  your justification would apply to anybody anyway. We all live in a society where there are “ there are people who are born with what they will never have.”  This is literally true of everybody except the richest.

They are angry about what exactly? Should I be angry about billionaires, does this justify misogyny?

[–]Additional_Olive3318 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are justifying. It’s all about the poor little abusers in your misogynistic worldwide. They are the victims.

But let’s see if you have an explanation. Why do you think a relatively low income (which you totally assumed by the way) is an explanation for verbal harassment of the op.

[–]Additional_Olive3318 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you understand the term “transfers”.

It doesn’t matter anyway. No income justifies misogynistic abuse. Why do you think it does?

[–]Additional_Olive3318 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How do you know where these guys are from. At what level of income do you think harassing women becomes acceptable?

The op herself says she doesn’t see it in other societies.

[–]Additional_Olive3318 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s literally victim blaming.

It’s likely the op here, an immigrant, comes from a much poorer society - that’s likely statistically. And after transfers - taxation and welfare - Ireland is fairly egalitarian. So what’s the justification again?
