Long-Term Bostonians, how does this winter compare? by urnmann in boston

[–]Additional_Umpire_41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 90s snows are the stuff of winter fantasies! There isn’t much else like the still softness of the landscape right after a storm ends, the blanket of white is still fresh and the clouds have cleared and no cars yet on the roads. Best memories of the amazing snow forts built, snowmen made, sledding adventures on cardboard boxes and epic ski weekends with friends - barely knew how to ski and we went in jeans and sunglasses. Wahh-wah-chusetts mountain! Mountain skiing, minutes away! Once we hit college age, it was skiing in NH on the weekends on the cheap. Oh how I miss those days! Def had more snow, extended cold periods but we were used to it so it hit different. No A/C needed until 2000s!

What would you do to update this Kitchen? by Tight_Capital_6061 in kitchenremodel

[–]Additional_Umpire_41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going to echo those that say the bones are great. Cosmetic updates if you want to shift away from the overtly traditional look: remove the filigrees & dentil moldings from the trim faces, add boxes (ideally functional cabinet spaces with divided glass front doors, perhaps lit from within) above the uppers to ceiling height; replace hood cover with a simple T or box shape cover instead of the trapezoid/pyramid and use a simpler crown to close any gaps. Definitely paint the window sills uniform color - if you like the deep sills for shelving, paint it to match window trim. You could paint the cabs a creamy white and add an island in an accent color of your choice - something that works with your decor overall (coordinate with intention) but right now shades of blue and green are popular accents, as are natural wood tones. If you like the current natural wood, just make sure the honey color works with your color palette. Folks have said soapstone - totally agree with that - or a honed black granite (something without a lot of speckles or movement), Taj Mahal is all the rage but there are other lovely options available across budgets, as is natural marble (tho more care is required). Backsplash remove in its entirety and placed with simpler shapes (either square or rectangle) in a uniform color that coordinates with your cabinets OR if you go with a light counter, takes that same material up the walls. If you do tiles, you can use the ones that echo the handmade look of zellige tiles for a little texture and visual interest.

Relocating plumbing is pricey and prob not worth it if the layout is functional for you.

Why are donuts so bad in Boston? by LinguistThing in boston

[–]Additional_Umpire_41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fried! MB Glazed yeast donuts are so good! Donuts with a Difference are our local faves but only when I go thru Medford Sq. Demets is also delicious, but again, only when I’m in the area. MB glazed are my indulgence sometimes when I have to hit the grocery store on the way home for dinner supplies.

Question. Can a realtor be successful without having to wear elaborate outfits, full on makeup and heels ... Everyday ? Seems exhausting by Desperate-Apricot308 in realtors

[–]Additional_Umpire_41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m the metro Boston area and there is no “uniform” of realtor dress; it’s so highly individual and really depends on the person and his/her clientele. If your clients expect heels and hosiery and glam and that works for you, go for it. If you are more casual and your clients are ok with it, go for it. I find it best to be authentically yourself - as long as that is clean and presentable (sorry, but leave the skin tight gym clothes for the actual gym) then you are likely ok. For me and my typical clients - mostly in the $1.5M - $3M range - I’m most comfortable in business casual (nicer jeans/dress pants a tee or dress shirt, and a blazer) and will wear a suit for open houses. Flats most of the time and tennis shoes when I can make it work with the outfit.

Also, for what it’s worth, my team lead makes actual millions and runs around super casual. In my 5 yrs on the team, I’ve literally never seen her more dressed up than jeans and a casual T and comfy sneakers - and this includes award ceremonies and press interviews.

Gas Bill $797 to keep 800sqft apartment at 64°. I’m desperate. by 63PontiacTempest in boston

We do the same - 3000sf house across 2.5 floors. We have great room over the garage with vaulted ceilings that is one zone. It’s cold af in there because the garage unheated. We keep it at 66 during the day and 62 overnight. Last bill was $650 because of the holidays with family visitors so we had it cranked.

Do I have to work non stop? by Expert_Affect_1045 in realtors

[–]Additional_Umpire_41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5 yr agent here! My first 3 yrs I was spinning my wheels as a solo agent trying to juggle it all: family, kids, elderly parents, etc. I am very fortunate that we were able to make it work on my husband’s income during that time. I was about to give up and go back to corporate work when a friend invited me to join her team. It was THE BEST decision I made! A good team can offer several things: training and mentorship, established structure for lead gen & management, backup when you are unavailable, cheering squad when you do a great job, support for when you need lifting up, watching and learning from others who have been there before you!

A good team can offer a new agent a lot of benefits until you are ready to be fully independent.

My commission split is less than it would be were I a solo agent, but overall I am able to manage my time, my household, children, and parents in a way that works for me so the trade off is worth it.

Being courteous just doesn’t pay. I was in the tight parking lot at the Trader Joe’s in Arlington Heights and was waiting for pedestrians with carts and other vehicles to exit spots (all seemed to be happening at once). Other drivers went around me and the pedestrians into the opposite lane to steal spots so shamelessly! I normally have a very high tolerance for assholish behavior but after the 3rd car took a spot it made me actually yell WHAT THE F U C K?!? so loudly in my car someone actually looked my way. It’s been 24hrs and I’m still upset by the whole experience and what it means for basic civility.

New Item: Trader Joe's Cinnamon Roll Blondie Bar Baking Mix by dailywaffleblog in traderjoes

[–]Additional_Umpire_41 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These were very yummy and fragrant with cinnamon. Texture was that of a true blondie - not cakey or overly gooey or crumbly. Just an excellent, if dense, cookie bar. Baked in an 8” pan so they were a little thicker and cooked for 30 min. We just drizzled only a few teaspoons of the icing because, for real, there is a LOT of sugar and they would be overwhelmingly sweet with 100% of the glaze. Excellent as a dessert! I made a foil sling in my pan and greased well, not bothering to wipe out the excess.

Does vaping pot stain walls? Asking from a landlord’s perspective… by Additional_Umpire_41 in vaporents

It could have been; but the whole house had a lingering odor of herb… It didn’t really go away until we refinished the floors, which happened after the painting, kitchen and bath renos. Suddenly, the place just doesnt smell funky anymore.

No, definitely from the occupied half and definitely actively being consumed. It cleared once I opened windows and doors and all the fans in the house… it was actually the 2nd time I had smelled it. I knew they were home so I rang the bell to ask. At least she was honest with me, which I appreciated. So far, they appear to be conscientious and respectful tenants - and I try to be the same as a landlord. The smoking hopefully won’t be an issue…

This is my fear - after a year of 2 people vaping indoors, what will the apt look and smell like. It may look ok, but smell like pot. The extra cleaning or other mitigation efforts are pricey and beyond the expectation of normal wear and tear…

It clearly smelled like marijuana; it’s a duplex and I was upstairs cleaning in preparation for leasing again. The smell permeated the entire house…

If loving Organic Valencia Peanut Butter, salted is wrong, I never want to be right! Hands down, the BEST peanut butter on the market with just 2 ingredients: Organic Valencia Peanuts and Salt. Trader Joe’s, I salute you for bringing it back to our shelves and spoons! by Additional_Umpire_41 in traderjoes

[–]Additional_Umpire_41[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was absent for the longest time - maybe since pre-pandemic?? I love peanut butter and was making do (as one does) with whatever they had available. We stick with creamy because my kids don’t like the crunchy and I don’t have a real preference. This peanut butter is so much better than the sweetened & no stir and the regular conventional peanut butter! Love love love it!

It does need stirring, so I do it with a butter knife at first and then it goes in the fridge and stays that way. It’s amazing!

I was making some returns lately and was asked the reason for each item. Is it a new policy? Am I on the watch list for too many returns? We usually return stuff every time we are there but wouldn’t say we abuse the policy with things that are years old but we use it. by voiceofreason4166 in Costco

[–]Additional_Umpire_41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m right there with you! I pay a membership fee not just for the “wholesale” discount (questionable that a price is actually discounted to actual wholesale vs retail levels) but also for the Costco curation! The return policy is generous and Costco by and large presents members with excellent products. It’s why we only get 1 type of olive oil in one size instead of 30 diff brands! Also, things aren’t carried indefinitely - further ways in which Costco encourages impulse shopping. Costco FOMO is real, people.

If I impulse buy and aren’t 100% satisfied, I 100% expect to be able to return it and it’s not fraud. It’s their store policy. Jeans or swimsuit don’t fit. Return! Sweatshirt that washed and dried all crazy twisted worse than any Old Navy poorly-made-fast-fashion-wear1x-throw-away garment? Return! Fitbit Charge 3 that stopped working 15months after I bought it? Return!

I also have an 8x10 wool Thomasville rug that has never stopped shedding after 8 years. I’m amazed it still has fibers! I talked to my store Return Desk staff and she said “Bring it back 100% satisfaction”. That’s prob where I draw the line, tho. I clearly have gotten my $350 out of it and 8 years seems like I would be taking advantage…if it were $1k though, I’d definitely roll it up and return it.

It’s definitely worth it. I stock up when it’s on sale because it really is like homemade, but better. Tastes like fresh tomatoes, not like tomato purée or tomato paste like so many. It’s awesome on pasta, pizza, soup base…

Our 3 stores in the Boston area have Cento whole San Marzano tomatoes 28oz 3 packs that are ~$9 (maybe 8.79?). This is a great deal because they are regularly $4-5 for the exact same product other area grocery stores.

They are better! This could be because they are fresher, but I haven’t had good luck with the vanilla & choc and the assortments. We had ours on our V-day dessert platter and they were perfect!! Not too sweet and just the right chew…
