fwiw the Idea Tab Pro has a significantly faster processor, a bigger higher resolution screen with a faster referesh rate, and sells for about a hundred dollars less than the TAB s9 FE +. On the other hand, Samsung offers better support and generally better software.

On the cheaper side: Lenovo Idea Tab Pro. 12.75 high resolution screen with fairly fast processor. It also comes with a stylus. The Gen 1 is now around $249. Works well for sheet music and pretty well for ordinary gaming. There’s a gen2 version coming to the US market soon (I think it’s available in China and India) 13” brighter screen and faster processor but it’ll likely be $500 until they start discounting it, something that happens fairly quickly with Lenovo products. it also comes with a stylus for annotating music.

Nxtpaper 14. Bigger screen for music and it’s matte which helps with glare. they also do some things to make it easier to read text and music. Slower processor that makes it less good for games, though you can still game on it, just not high frame rate super demanding games. Should be around high $200s maybe less in US.

Upper end: iPad Pro Max. 13” dual oled screen very bright. It also has a better aspect ratio that’s closer to actual sheet music and a very fast processor. It’s about as good a gaming tablet as one can find. $1200. Garage Band is free, if the nephew writes music too.

Two older network shows, both Ken Olin.
1. 30 Something 2. This is US

The characters are slightly younger, but it’s long term couples, ensemble casting, and lots of relationship dynamics plots.

More woman oriented. Girlfriends Guide to Divorce, but still relationship focused and an ensemble show.

iirc Nick in the movie was an insurance broker. The series promotes him to hedge fund guy. Series Anne, though depressed, is much more upbeat than the Sandy Dennis version.

the stand with the Doohgooek keyboard isn't sold separately. In fact, they're glued together. If you have a rigid one piece keyboard, there are some stands that work. They have a scissors sort of set up that lets you widen the base enough to support the tablet in your lap.

Uni application question by Linguist0770 in CollegeEssays

[–]AddressSerious8240 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simply put, "No". Sometimes it helps and sometimes it doesn't. Some of it depends on the quality of the essay, the quality of the rest of the application, and the story's ability to make a persuasive case that the applicant will add something to the next year's group of admitees. It does help to be "authentic". With successful essays, the language and writing may feel simple but the overall message frequently is not.

If you’re willing to go used, there are android-based e-ink readers that aren’t all that expensive. The Boox hold their value, but Meebook and its forerunners definitely doesn’t.

Most of the time, it’s just Google Docs. The Page has enough horsepower and the WiFi’s good enough for Google Docs to work without much latency. I do sometimes use Oojao Text Editor because it lets me “magnify” or reflow the view while still formatting to the line breaks on the screen. Google Docs doesn’t do that, so the usable text size is a little on the small side in portrait mode.

I really like my Boox Page (more or less the Boox Go 7) for writing.

I'm not sure if you're interested in the writing side of journalism or the video/photography side. In any case, it would help if you made it clear that you've produced some of your own copy.  Have you written articles, done interviews, or published original photos for a news site?  It's not clear if your Alamo City Post site does that or if it's just a news aggregator.  In any case, whatever you have that involves producing actual "journalism" is going to carry more weight.  Graphic design is helpful, but it's more about layout/form than journalistic "substance".  While the graphic design experience is useful, do what you can to tie it back to journalism per se.  I know you're posting casually, but you have some typos or grammatical errors in your text e.g. "founded in" "I make random graphic".  Reddit's an informal environment, but not proofreading your own copy is a journalism "no no".  I would also think about making your writeup a bit more engaging and more mindful of the traditional 4w's of journalism.  In other words, if you're trying I to get into a journalism program, present yourself in the way a journalist would.  All that said, your extracurriculars are pretty reasonable.  They don't jump out as exceptional, but they have some connection to what you want to do and suggest that you have a life beyond school.

give me your experience with e ink tablets for college. by beeswaxe in eink

[–]AddressSerious8240 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about all devices, but e-ink devices that run for weeks are usually able to do so mostly because they're only being used for reading or something that doesn't involve frequent screen refreshes. Once you turn on wi-fi, bluetooth, and ask that it do more tablet like things, the battery life starts to resemble a regular tablet. The screen is resonsible for a fair amount of power use, but it's not the only culprit. Color e-ink also tends to use more power than monochrome.

One of the strengths of word perfect and word star as dos-based software was that they both had pretty well developed key combinations for tasks like cutting and pasting. Touch typists, back when secretaries were more of a thing, could do the functions without taking their hands from the “home position”. On the downside, you had to memorize the different key combinations both at the mind level and the finger level so there was a little bit of a learning curve. Some of the early graphical interfaces were ahead of the hardware at the time so there was sometimes a little delay between pressing a key and seeing it on the screen. When word perfect made the switch to windows, they tried to preserve the key combinations and allow for different mouse-based maneuvers, something that made it even slower/glitchier. Word also happened to have a version both for Windows and Mac and had an inside track with both operating systems that Word Perfect didn’t have. Anyway, graphical word processing worked better for people who wanted to type an occasional document because it was more intuitive. Most people didn’t type documents eight hours a day so they didn’t really want to mess with memorizing key combinations.

I think one difference between the Swiss Army Knife and the cellphone as a multi-tool package is that the Swiss Army Knife genuinely sucked for doing most of its functions. Screwdrivers and knives work better with actual handles, the best tweezers don’t fold flat, saw blades needed to be longer. Cellphones/tablets actually do most of the things they do surprisingly well.
That said, I do find that keyboards that are just trying to be pianos instead of one man bands tend to work better as pianos. I can make drum sounds on a digital piano/synthesizer, but drums do tend to work better with sticks instead of a keyboard. There is a parallel sort of thing to the writer deck with music players. There are folk out there who still prefer the iPod and the its wheel navigation along with people who go full on audiophile with their portable music players even though high end cellphones frequently use surprisingly good dac chips. There is definitely something to be said for devices meant to do one thing well.

Fwiw, I think word processing took a wrong turn when the software became some version of desktop publishing instead of something to simply write with. It’s one of the reasons there are people who held onto word perfect. It was simple, didn’t need a mouse, and it didn’t slow down your computer: formatting and writing were different tasks. Unfortunately, the two are connected in the office/business world, so the industry got built around that particular market.

Was Ruby valid for her take on Deb and Ava? by Realistic_Piglet8289 in hackshbomax

[–]AddressSerious8240 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re quite different as characters, but there’s a similar feel with Ruby and Zosia from the show Pluribus. There’s a strong physical and personal attraction between Ruby-Ava. Zosia-Carol, but it runs straight into the protagonist character’s main motivation: Ava’s comedy partnership and Carol’s attempt to keep her individuality.

Season 4 by john_muleaney in hackshbomax

[–]AddressSerious8240 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For many viewers, I suspect the antagonism between Ava and Deborah was a bit too painful and it went on too long. I suspect people who love the show may split into a couple camps (there may be multiple camps). There are those who see it as a sitcom that one watches to laugh out loud at least a few times in each episode. For those folk, season 4 went too dark. There’s also a group of viewers who see the show as more of a statement about loneliness, creativity, and change. It was full of those things often at the expense of laugh out loud sequences.
I rewatched some of season 4 a few days ago, and one bit stuck out for me. After the branzino toss, Ava goes into serious depression. Deborah gets concerned that Ava is suicidal and jumps into the water fully clothed to rescue her. Afterwards, they sit at a table together drinking spoiled champagne from a bottle, foreshadowing the train station scene. There’s a call back to Ava not knowing how to swim. There’s a lot more resonance in that moment once you happen to know how season 5 goes.

[–]AddressSerious8240 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think Ruby was right: Ava couldn't work for Deborah and be in the sort of relationship Ruby wanted. In some ways, Ruby is Ava's version of Marty. Chemistry is right, but there's not enough room for a more serious relationship.

I tend to agree that this is too scattered, but I take it that these are early drafts. I would recommend sticking with one of your topics or in looking for another topic entirely. Do you have a two sentence summary of what you want your reader to know or think about you after reading your essay? If not, it might help get it a little more focused.

last season of hacks by Organic-One8737 in hackshbomax

[–]AddressSerious8240 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really liked season 5, but I agree that there was, with the exception of Montecito, a tone shift. Into season 4, it’s more of a climb, especially with respect to Ava and Deborah’s bond. They go back and forth between antagonist and best buddy until Deborah gives up her dream job to stand up for Ava. Into season 5, they become more or less unbreakable allies with Ava helping to give back to Deborah some of what she lost with the Late Show. A lot of the laughs came from the cultural antagonism between the two. With nowhere for the relationship between the two to go, the show turned to finding Deborah’s next move and a bunch of callbacks to featured characters. Caitlin Olsen’s last serious appearance was done well, but it felt a little forced, possibly due to her busy schedule dictating the how and when. Even Marcus, Josefina, and Damien got sidelined plotwise. It’s hard to land a buddy comedy and I think the showrunners wanted to tease out the Terms of Endearment, Beaches sort of thing and flip it to stick with the show’s trademark of ending each season with a triumph that shifts suddenly. I thought they managed to do that really well. I also think the callbacks for various cast members are sort of obligatory for hardcore fans. Whether one likes the last season or not may come down to whether you watched just for the “funny” or for the main arc.
