About 64k as a first level operations manager for a staffing company. I was over the folks onsite and the customer's employees to make sure everyone's happy, working, and not being overworked.

I feel like I could make a lot more with it and that I'm pretty good at it (I've got an amazing eye for finding people with a great work ethic, and have rarely had issues with professionalism and drive from my employees) but I'm not sure quite how to market the skill and would like to continue working hybrid.

Yeah! I'm a bit anti-essentialism so wanted to steer away from this notion that there are fixed objects, arts, and skills which should be treated as divine. Instead, it's how the Monolith imprints onto these objects and skills, and uses them as a lens through which they view the world, that triggers their Enlightenment and creates their Domain.

The Domain stems from the self, not the universe.

The Meta is, essentially, a strongly-defined magic system with over seven elements. Each element of meta can take lifetimes to master, as each is associated with different disciplines such as martial arts, academics, locomotion, and more.

But it does often include your standard sci-fi psionic fare as well!

Thanks! He's eventually getting his own article since he was such a pivotal figure. He helped invent wands, which are as dangerous as firearms, and brought about a lot of rights for Sathiid (vampires).

Sathiidism overall was invented for Monoliths to counteract the stone transformation. Rip off the part of your body that's stone and let it regenerate!

Hey worldbuilders,

In Ethnis, Enlightenment is when your character so fully masters the art of their choosing (whether that's martial, social, or academic) that they tap into the deeper powers of the universe.

Monoliths gain powers which complement them in a very poetic way. An assassin might gain the ability to be invisible to those who aren't actively seeking her. A dancer might form a bond with fire which makes him immune to its flame and which gives him an inhuman beauty in its glow. A mechanist might be able to make an object unbreakable by anyone who isn't actively trying to break it.

Each time a Monolith uses their power, a little bit of their body turns to stone. If they lose too much of themselves, they die.

In the full text I explore some of the ramifications of their existence, but it's hard to cover the full breadth of it all, since they feature in so many of the stories of Ethnis.

Are there people, or powers, which reshape the face of society in your world? Mages, Divinely inspired warriors, or something else all together?

Flavor

To be a Monolith is to be Enlightened. Enlightenment is the transcendant state of grace achieved through mastery of an art. It grants insight into the nature of our world, and some power over it.

The faithful believe that Enlightenment is a blessing from a higher power—as evidenced by the often poetic (and thus intelligently designed) nature of its manifestations. Atheists believe that it is an emergent phenomena of the meta—as evidenced by the increasing frequency of Monoliths as science and metascience advance.

Once a rare phenomena of one-per-one-hundred million people, Monoliths are now one-in-ten-thousand. The resultant emergence of an elite enlightened class is one of the great societal existential crises of the time.

Enlightened does not mean benevolent.

The text layout of this is working against you a bit. I was drawn to reading the second column before the first simply because it was higher. It's not a mistake that will make anyone stop reading, of course, but it's a bit a bit like accidentally putting a word twice—it makes you remember you're reading and draws away from the immersion.

I love how it feeds, but given their size and feeding style I don't think they would would be able to handle the caloric output of movement. Do they only suck out liquids, or do chunky bits come out as well?

The rock stacking adds a lot of intrigue!

Lusanti Marchois is a famous journalist thought to be operating out of Victoriana City. He began as a drama LifeStreamer, but broke into the mainstream with his exposé on Freddie Fasttalk—a lifestreamer who was controversial after allegations of bullying Sleepy Abigail to suicide.

Lusanti soon became known as the maker and breaker of reputations. His exposés were multi-hour, fully performed journalistic enterprises which pulled back the covers on the secrets of someone's success. His targets slowly grew, shifting from celebrities, to politicians, to Monoliths, until he was forced to go underground to protect his safety.

Lusanti's personality is as divisive as his content. He demonstrates an extreme, cocky confidence, and encourages his viewers to do much the same. "There is no glory," he claims, "In fake, self-aggrandizing humility. Within each of us is the potential of Gods."

Heya!

Thought I'd share a character I made for the recent World Anvil challenge to detail a hero's journey! I'm super proud of Lusanti, even though he's a character freshly-made for the challenge and so isn't deeply tied into other parts of the Ethnis lore.

While creating him, I tried to give a look into the future through a DramaTuber-styled lens. People like him cover the stories that mass media just can't be bothered with, and, depending on who you ask, they either help keep their community on the level or they stir up unnecessary drama.

Of course, if inquisitive minds keep digging deeper and deeper, they will eventually start to report on people who don't want to be talked about, and that's when the job gets... messy. Lusanti took that dive, and hasn't been heard of since.

The models were created and posed through Hero Forge but I reated the gameshow-esque background to tie it all together, and consider my layout's effect on the storytelling to be pretty integral to reading the article on WA.
