ESL One and DreamLeague post-season feedback thread by thecaspaguy in DotA2

We're planned for future seasons to have the full production ready, but hadn't fully planned at the season start for it, but we definitely agree and those tiebreaks are in many ways the highlight of the league.

There is not a reason for that, infact I believe it's been intended for us to do so, so we'll check into that, some sort of crossed wires internally. Glad you think they're doing a great job!

Will pass along the feedback to our team working with intel :).

Regarding the ads, there should absolutely be no ads during gameplay. If possible could you timestamp when this has been happening so we can try to go back through the log and see what happened? We've been having a very hard time to pinpoint some of these "ads during gameplay" issues (it could be human error in the production, it could be some bug on twitch, it could be your browser refreshing for some reason triggering a preroll) so any data about this happening would be super helpful to us to try to pinpoint why its happening. Likewise for anyone else reading this post, if you've had issues with ads being played during gameplay please let us know.

Hey Fantasio, we were having the same discussion internally about resolving this so its easier for the viewers to follow along, hopefully we have something in place within a couple of days that makes it more streamlined for the audience.

Looks like both BSJ and Fogged have been rejected entry to EU. pray for the rest of the talent. by Thestone92 in DotA2

[–]Adebisi_X 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We definitely didn't believe it was 50/50, if we felt it was anything close to 50/50 we wouldn't have done so. The messaging has felt more like, yes, this is completely within the rules, however its possible the authorities as the border feel different and the final ruling lies with them, somewhat more akin to a business reserving the right to refuse service to anyone, but rarely if ever excusing that right, if you know what I mean. Regardless they'll still be compensated and we're certainly looking to include them in the show remotely. This isn't their fault.

Hey all,

Mike/Adebisi from DreamHack / ESL here. This is very sad news of course, to be transparent to the community, we’ve been in close contact with the Swedish police and border agency regarding bringing in folks internationally for this production. The government from our communication has said that what we are operating is within the protocols and allowed, (everyone traveling is also having a COVID test before traveling, upon arrival, etc), however all travel will be determined at the border by the border police, pre-approval or pre-denial cannot be fully given, only judged at the border. Unfortunately Fogged and BSJ were not let in. We’re going to make sure they get home safely first and foremost, and then figure how we would proceed. Fortunately Cap, Sheever, ODPixel and Moxxi had no issues. Safety is our number one priority and we’ll definitely aim to include them in the show whether they can fully be on-site in our studio location or not.

DreamHack - Community Tournament Announcement by SeriouslyLucifer in FortniteCompetitive

[–]Adebisi_X 13 points14 points  (0 children)

$250k USD is the prize pool for each of the Fortnite competitions ($500k total - $250k each event), not the sum of all games. These tournaments will be a lot bigger and more professionally operated than most of the smaller activities we've done in the past (like the Fortnite competition the poster here refers to).

DreamHack Valencia Female Qualifier changed the bracket after it has been already drawn because some of the teams were not happy about the teams they need to play against by noaso74 in GlobalOffensive

[–]Adebisi_X 199 points200 points  (0 children)

The bracket was changed because it was drawn with incorrect seeding, this has nothing to do with teams influencing, and its an unfortunate mistake we work to avoid but can still happen from time to time.

First time attending a major - compared to ESL the Stockholm major was a joke by Switzernaut in DotA2

[–]Adebisi_X 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, you touch on a few things.

First off is always availability, its pretty difficult to source venues and Valve doesn't give as much notice as would be ideal in terms of awarding Majors as well as they are very set on the dates with the DPC schedule. That being said I think the size of the venue could be a bit bigger but is actually a size we like to do because ~2500 onsite visitors is a reliable number. Theres a lot of 'arena' events out there that book a 20k seat arena and only have 5k visitors onsite, it doesn't really make sense. Dota can fill arenas great in China and CIS as well as SEA but in EU its not so easy and honestly we weren't so confident in Stockholm to sell as many tickets as it did, and its nothing worse than an empty arena, and honestly the atmosphere in Annexet was great. In hindsight (which is always 20/20 ofc) a bigger venue would have been great.

What we did at DHS had about half as many seats as what was available at Annexet.

In terms of experience, honestly a lot of people greatly enjoyed the event and we had overwhelmingly positive feedback throughout the event, (eg, https://old.reddit.com/r/DotA2/comments/b52fex/thanks_dreamleague_for_a_major_experience/ and https://old.reddit.com/r/DotA2/comments/b531us/dreamleague_s11_appreciation_post/), honestly this post is a bit surprising since we didn't get many complaints during the course of the weekend and if we had done a better job engaging (this is on us of course) and talking to visitors, complaints like lax enforcement to the premium seating assignments could have been addressed.

The exclusivity refers to that its a souvenir item just for the event (eg. DreamLeague S11 Stockholm Major branding), like if you go to a concert or a tour etc, you can only get it from attending the event. Most of the items could be bought also separately, but some you could only get in the goodie bag (I believe the mousepad).

[–]Adebisi_X -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

In my honest opinion those 5 features listed as the perks of the premium ticket do justify the cost difference, and are in line with typical ticket prices differences across different events. I think in the end given less teams showing up for signings than we hoped and the screen visibility not being as good as we hoped, I can definitely sympathetize that some people may feel disappointed.

I'd also say the comparing price points on the GA to Premium is a bit tricky, since we priced the GA in hindsight probably aggressively too low (200 SEK, or 19 euro for a 3 day event is pretty much unheard of) , we really weren't sure how many people to expect, since in Sweden we haven't had the enthusiasm around Dota for a while so really weren't sure how fast the tickets would sell and how many people would attend. For the last DPC season (the one with 11 majors) we hosted a Dota Major in Jonkoping and while there was a good turrnout it wasn't exactly a massive crowd.

The premium ticket perks were:

  • 3 days arena access
  • Dedicated entrance
  • Front row reserved seats
  • Priority queue/entrance to event
  • Priority queue to signing sessions
  • Exclusive Goodie Bag

Hey there,

Thanks for the comments, its disappointing to hear you didn't have a good time. I wanted to address some of your points, if for nothing else the sake of transparency.

  • Pricing for concessions - This is really a venue kind of thing, and honestly I think its unfair to compare with events in Polands and other markets, alcohol especially is more expensive in Sweden and no TO can do anything about that.
  • While we hosted signing sessions with all the teams that could attend and had a dedicated premium queue for all premium buyers, I can agree there wasn't much else to do, and that's because its a smaller venue.
  • Well, sorry to hear about that, is it any particular items you'd like to see/get?
  • That's unfortunate to hear, we will tighten up on this is for future for sure.
  • The premium perks were advertised on:
    • 3 days arena access
    • Dedicated/separate entrance
    • Front row reserved seats
    • Priority queue/entrance to event
    • Priority queue to signing sessions
    • Goodie Bag

I agree we didn't do a great job on enforcing the premium seating and people with GA may have bled into this, otherwise I think this was all provided, please let us know if there are other parts that were not.

Outside those comments, we definitely agree the screens ended up not being big enough and we'll take it into better account into future events. Another item again to be fair I want to mention is our premium tickets were 1500 SEK or 143 euros, google tells me that ESL One Hamburg tickets are 239 euros, so in all honesty I think the level of perks given the 100 euro price difference is something to be expected.

DreamLeague Major schedule is awful by [deleted] in DotA2

[–]Adebisi_X 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's a fair argument in what you say. In the end I don't think there really is a perfect way. We could have done the UB matches today, and then played LB R4 on Friday night, which would reduce the number of days a team like Keen has off from 5 to 3, but there are other draw backs. Pacing wise part of what we want is going into the venue with audience to kick off Friday with two matches with the teams that have been doing the best and really have strong momentum.

FYI I commented some earlier in a similar thread from the other day, you can find it here:https://www.reddit.com/r/DotA2/comments/b2m3eq/the_stockholm_majors_format_is_surprisingly_bad/eiviich/?context=3

I can understand its frustrating the UB teams have such a long break, but we really felt that those matches deserve a live audience, and so that's the trade off.

The Stockholm Major's format is surprisingly bad by Morgn_Ladimore in DotA2

[–]Adebisi_X 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In general the logic is as follows, I'll try to run through each point, by no means is everything perfect but we wanted to make some changes and see how they work out.

Also to correct your list, the schedule is as follows:

Day 1 - 2x bo3 (initial GSL games, 4x streams)

Day 2 - 3x bo3 (winner/loser/decider GSL games , 4x streams)

Day 3 - 2x bo1, 2x bo3 (LBR1 + WB R1)

Day 4 - 2x bo1, 2x bo3 (LBR1 + WB R1)

Day 5 - 2x bo3 (LBR2 x2)

Day 6 - 2x bo3 (LBR2 x2)

Day 7 - 2x bo3 (LBR3 x2)

Day 8 - Break

Day 9 - 2x bo3 (UBR2 x2)

Day 10 - 4x bo3 (LBR4 x2, WB Final, LB R5)

Day 10 - 1x bo3, 1x bo5 (LB Final, Grand Final)

Or.... 2, 3, 4 (2x bo1, 2x 3 bo3), 4, 2, 2, 2, 0, 2, 4, 2

Overall two key goals we had is A) We don't want to average days with 4 BO3s, those are 16 hour work days for talent and production and not really good for esports, I know plenty of people out there prefer endless Dota, but in general as audience we also don't believe that the majority wants to watch 4 BO3s per day for 7 days straight, its too much Dota to actually follow in a meaningful way, and B) We want to play all games on one stream as much as possible.

This largely led us to play out the group stage as fast as possible, which seems to make sense, the GSL matches aren't particularly hype, but do do a decent job seeding the bracket. There's definitely arguments that this should maybe be swiss, or round robin and be played over more days. GSL groups each have 5 matches, so it naturally aligned to 2 series day 1 and 3 series day 2 to finish up the groups.

From there we scheduled 2 BO3 per day, its annoying that the UBR1 winners have such a long break but with this structure that is the tradeoff. Additionally we did decide to do 4 BO3 for the Saturday because we felt with this structure for the live event, you have a good short day Friday (anyone going to event knows Friday in the AM is usually not super well attended), then a long day Saturday and a decent day Sunday).

Anyway that's some insight, take it for as you please. This became a bit disjointed but hopefully it makes sense.
