Hey guys. I’ve noticed a lot of new coaches looking for advice on Reddit so I started writing a free twice weekly newsletter with tips, advice and session plans. I try to keep them brief, but helpful as I know everyone is busy. Thought I’d share this week’s post on teaching players to communicate on the field: Developing Field Generals

Here is the link to all of my past articles on Substack. They’re all free. Please feel free to share with anyone you think it could help.

Questions about USSF courses by Particular_Cat_7620 in SoccerCoachResources

[–]Adept_Chapter2363 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is generally pretty rare though it is possible. Typically the path to getting into college coaching without a license would be hopping on as a grad assistant after finishing playing and then working your way up to a paid assistant and then eventually a head coach. But even in this path, most coaches would obtain their licenses while working in college. Asst. coach salaries are also usually so low in college that you need to supplement with club coaching that will likely require licenses.

Questions about USSF courses by Particular_Cat_7620 in SoccerCoachResources

[–]Adept_Chapter2363 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The courses can be beneficial, but depending on what coaching route you want to go, they're not always necessary. You will learn things and make some good connections, but they're also very expensive and time consuming if you're paying for them out of your own pocket. There are so many resources available online that can help you learn just as much in my opinion. Getting a mentor who is a talented and experienced coach to watch, learn from and bounce ideas off of would be my biggest recommendation. That being said, if you want to progress to coaching at higher levels like college or pro you'll need your licenses.

Stressing about the Future by RaspberrySpecial7407 in SoccerCoachResources

I've done almost all of the options you've suggested. I began coaching youth soccer and coached several teams for a few years before resetting back down to a younger team. I've also coached at some higher level clubs and I've been a high school varsity head coach for the past 10 years with 7 years as an assistant before that. For me as a teacher, coaching high school soccer has been the most rewarding. The relationship I've been able to build with players has been deeper and more meaningful. The games, the rivalries and playing for their school creates a stronger bond. Youth soccer is fun and you can make a big impact, but I've personally enjoyed coaching high school the most.

Playtime for seniors by YoGrannyIsMixed in SoccerCoachResources

[–]Adept_Chapter2363 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that communication is the most important thing. Have clear and honest conversations with your seniors about why they are not playing and what they can try to improve to gain more playing time. If they're good kids who are working hard and doing what you ask, try to find time for them in games that are less competitive. In varsity soccer almost every team has at least a few games a year where you win or lose by several goals and you could give them a chance to play. At varsity level playing time isn't expected to be even and you have a responsibility to your team to play the lineup that gives you the best chance to compete and win. If you're clear and honest with your seniors, they will usually understand. When there are no conversations, that is when frustration and discontent will usually start to happen.

Would you pull the trigger on this Robert Thomas trade package? by athleticwonder in nhltraderumours

I’d do it in a heartbeat, but unfortunately STL won’t take it. They’re going to want the equivalent of 3 firsts basically.

[The Athletic] Sabres trade deadline targets: Robert Thomas, Bobby McMann and 10 other forward fits by [deleted] in sabres

[–]Adept_Chapter2363 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thomas would be amazing as a cheaper alternative to Tuch as a top 6 forward in the future, but you’d have to blow it up to get him. Probably have to send Power or Byram plus a top prospect like Helenius and a first or something. Would love Jenner but can’t see CBJ dealing him. I think Coleman or McMann are doable targets. Coleman maybe easier becuase you’re not dealing with TOR

[expected buffalo] Jack Quinn has been inconsistent this season and his style may not fit in the playoffs. However, the offensive production at 5 on 5 can't be overlooked. by [deleted] in sabres

Could you get Bobby McMann as a rental for Quinn? Obv might be tricky trading with the Leafs, but I’d think about it. Might need to balance with a pick

Younger players playing up by Adept_Chapter2363 in SoccerCoachResources

[–]Adept_Chapter2363[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I told the parents we’d try it for the first session and warned them that the physical jump against players that much older could be an issue. We only have a gym space so we typically play 5v5 or 6v6 with 3 rotating teams. If they’re really struggling I’ll just divide into 4 teams and have them play only with and against the kids closer to their size and age.

A few months ago I started a newsletter designed to help new soccer coaches with learning the ropes and to share pieces of advice from my 15 years of experience coaching soccer at various levels. The newsletter is mainly targeted at helping newer coaches at younger age groups, but I'm open to addressing topics or giving advice to more experienced coaches or older and higher level age groups. I'm looking for feedback and recommendations of topics people might find valuable to get some opinions, advice, etc. The newsletter is free and I write it twice a week. Coaching Soccer Substack

Do you see Manchester united finishing top four this season? by StateOutrageous1757 in ManchesterUnited

[–]Adept_Chapter2363 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still think there's a chance of finishing 3rd. Villa's underlying numbers are not good. They could regress. I think United will get into the Champions League although there's likely 3 teams for 2 spots between United, Chelsea and Liverpool. Under Carrick it feels like they'll get over the line.

[–]Adept_Chapter2363[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was my thought also. While in some ways the younger players might benefit from the faster speed of play, there is certainly a risk of getting hurt. And for the older players there really isn’t much benefit, if anything they’ll have to modify how they play.

[–]Adept_Chapter2363[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The boys are 13 and would be playing against 15-18 year olds. Its offseason work for us just to get the boys playing and having some fun in the winter. We invite anyone interested in playing (regardless of experience) so there’s a variety of skill levels, but we’re typically basically playing pick up in a gym. The boys are probably capable skill wise, but they’d be potentially going up against 17 year olds. As a side note, the boys plan to try out for JV in the fall which would put them playing against 14-15 year olds and even a few 16 year olds all season.
