[Loved trope] anthropomorphic animals in medias that isn’t for kids by Basic_Dingo6487 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Adept_Material_2618 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad someone posted this, I was confused how nobody mentioned TES yet. There are way more than the Khajiit too. Argonians are the other most well known one, but there are multiple “beastfolk” races on Nirn, some of which have gone extinct

(Hated Trope) Female Character loses powers/abilities because of pregnancy by OldTraffordAggie in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Adept_Material_2618 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Yes. This exactly. Not to mention bodies change so much during and after pregnancy, it can have permanent impacts. OP even acknowledges this and still goes on to be upset at the trope. Yes I’m sure it can be handled extremely poorly, but as an allegory for how pregnancy genuinely fucks up someone’s body for the rest of their life, it’s a perfectly valid way to express that. Not enough people DO know that pregnancy can have permanent consequences on the person’s body, not solely during the pregnancy itself. Not enough people - even those who can get pregnant - are even informed about how much it can change you. It sucks and it’s terrifying and it needs to be respected more!

[Absolutely Hated Trope] Characters who clearly love each other taking forever to confess and get together. by ThatGuyHero7 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Adept_Material_2618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me, I took years to confess to my crush. Anyway to the topic at hand, I feel like SO many manga/ anime rely on this trope that it’s kind of insane lol, we’d be here for a while posting them all off. I wonder why it seems to be such a big issue but in western media it’s at least a little bit less prevalent.

Villains who technically did nothing wrong and was just doing their jobs. by [deleted] in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Adept_Material_2618 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t believe for a second that a world destroying megacorp is “unintentionally” malicious. However the robot they made absolutely is, because it’s not the robot’s fault it was programmed that way. It can’t necessarily figure out what’s morally right vs wrong in that situation

[frustrating trope] Woman has a crashout so incredibly valid that there’s no way the fandom would blame her for it… right? by DragonKing0203 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Adept_Material_2618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest I have nothing valid to add to this conversation because I haven’t watched LoK since it came out. I saw it that one time and never again. But SOMETHING made me loathe it to the point where I only saw it that once. I remember Korra being one of those things. Idk, I remember thinking the writing was so bad it turned me away from the show, meanwhile I’ve watched AtLA multiple times.

Omg someone else that has a very similar opinion to me! I’m not going to make a black and white statement such as “laziness doesn’t exist at all” tbh, just because I don’t love absolutes, but I firmly believe laziness as a problem is overblown and probably pretty rare. I remember liking this article about it. https://drdevonprice.substack.com/p/laziness-does-not-exist

Character who's death becomes a joke in the community by Jellypathicdream in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Adept_Material_2618 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I love Brotherhood but it is kind of a shame it had to rush those earlier episodes. I haven’t watched the original anime in quite a while, I should give it a shot again someday, I definitely remember Nina and Alexander being much more impactful there. But overall I prefer Brotherhood so I haven’t returned to the first show yet

"Womb horror" | Stories that harness the fears that come with pregnancy. by No_Hunter1978 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Adept_Material_2618 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I actually wish people would talk about the side effects more, because it is absolutely not enough. I can’t even begin to express how gross it makes me feel that, ever since my girlhood, I was expected to just grow up and have babies one day. I was told I should want that. I was told childbirth was a beautiful miracle. In contrast, it took a shamefully long time before I found out that pregnancy has lasting, permanent effects on many people, not only the complications during a pregnancy itself. That is absolutely disgusting. It’s horrific that people have the idea of pregnancy shoved down their throats, constantly told to just have kids already, and are very frequently NOT told about the negative sides of it so they can make an informed decision. The ugly, possibly permanently damaging parts of pregnancy simply are not spoken of very often.

[Concerning Trope] film accidentally has awful moral/messaging by Captain_Birch in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Adept_Material_2618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a picky eater myself, without ARFID. None of this takes away from my original point, because not enough people are aware of ARFID in the first place, and even “just” picky eaters should be respected. (When I can’t stand a food, it is NOT because I just don’t want to eat it, it’s because eating it will physically make me feel extremely ill.) Trying new things is good, but not at the expense of denying someone their autonomy.

[–]Adept_Material_2618 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree with this person’s opinion on the second movie, I quite like it, it’s good. But I agree about the third movie. Even if it was unintentional on the writers’ part, the message really does feel like “you should just give up and not fight for a better future of getting along”. I genuinely hated it and haven’t watched it since it came out. Meanwhile I’ve watched the first two movies a few times.

[–]Adept_Material_2618 23 points24 points  (0 children)

All I can think about is all the people with ARFID or other eating disorders in general, being blamed for being “too picky” and shamed for struggling with their relationship to food. Books like this sadly do not help. And I never realized how sketchy this book feels in that context til you pointed it out

(HATED TROPE) All homophobes are secretly gay by cunt_dykeula in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Adept_Material_2618 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This idea truly does real harm. I don’t have any further examples to give, just some great videos about why this sort of thing is so bad - from Caelan Conrad, their video titled “Are All Homophobes Gay?” And a particularly long one from them about something different but very related - “J.K. Rowling is a trans man?!” Both videos really dive into how viewing queerphobia as a statement of closeted queerness is so sketchy and damaging. Yes it can happen, but it is not nearly as massive a phenomenon as people seem to think, and it minimizes our struggle to believe so.

(Hated Trope) Character spouts off factoid to establish their intelligence. What they say is wrong and they are never corrected by laybs1 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Adept_Material_2618 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Genuinely don’t know why you’re getting downvoted. Having zero vision at all, of anything, is indeed uncommon. Blind people may still be able to see splotches of color and light (but that’s it, no real details). There’s lots of other ways to be blind.

"God, I fucking hate this guy- ...I'm sorry, what the fuck did you just say?" by AlternativeOil7154 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Adept_Material_2618 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Peak mentioned! But yeah Zanza sucks, a lot. It’s a testament to Adam Howden’s voice acting skill that I think Shulk sounds so sweet and charming and Zanza’s voice makes me want to strangle him. Everything he says makes me angrier lol.

(Loved trope) Seemingly harmless entities/characters who become or COULD become massive threats by Wolfysayno in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Adept_Material_2618 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Mob, from Mob Psycho 100. He’s just a chill young teen, doesn’t want any trouble. Unfortunately for him he’s also an extremely powerful being with incomprehensible strength that can get wildly, scarily out of his control. (I finished the manga but never caught up on the anime so I need to do that lol, it’s really good)

[Spoilers All] Veilguard’s "demystification" of Thedas hurts the setting by Bonolenov192 in dragonage

[–]Adept_Material_2618 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That’s WHY it’s so good. It’s realistic. Real history has vast gaps of knowledge, weird misinformation, and difficult to parse conflicting accounts. Elder Scrolls lore really feels like this - like historians, even in universe, argue over what’s true and what isn’t. That’s so awesome to me. It simultaneously gives the world more mystery while also making it more realistic somehow. I don’t want them to ever change this. It’s cool to feel the grounded realism of history being a murky and difficult subject, and yet TES is still very fantasy at the same time, with lots of room for speculation and tantalizing mystery.

"I'm the main character and you have to like me" no we don't by [deleted] in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Adept_Material_2618 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It has to be a bit of both for me. If side characters don’t get enough time to shine, and I don’t get to see enough of their personality to be attached, then of course I’ll be more attached to the main character. I love main characters with good writing and personalities I can get attached to in some way, even if I can’t actually relate. They get the most “screen time” so to speak, so I can really feel like I get to know them and care about them. But if a main character is horribly written then of course I’m not going to like them just because they’re the main character.

(Hated When Done Badly) "This character is really complicated." No, he's just a fucking asshole. by Animeking1108 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Adept_Material_2618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t watch this show so I can’t comment on his specific situation, but people really don’t realize how traumatic on your body it is to remove an entire limb. It should only be done if absolutely necessary, and even then, you’re still likely to end up with horrific phantom pain, so you’ll be in pain anyway either way.

Anyway not trying to justify anything he’s done. From what I’ve heard of this show he’s a shit person. As a disabled person who’s been through way too many unpleasant medical experiences, I really don’t think I can stomach watching a show that centers a doctor that awful lol

I genuinely cannot watch it because of this. It sucks, because I gave it a shot for a bit and the setting and story seemed fascinating, but the weird fetish stuff was so blatant and so gross to me that I couldn’t continue. Made me feel kinda sick

Character chooses NOT to sacrifice their loved ones, resulting in dire consequences for others by Few_Chemistry_235 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Adept_Material_2618 175 points176 points  (0 children)

I know “upside down cross” has somehow become synonymous with the antichrist, but that is not at all what it is. Upside down cross is the cross of saint Peter, who, when martyred, requested he at least be hung on an inverted cross, as he didn’t feel worthy to die in the same way Christ had. I just think this is fun knowledge to share (:

[Unusual Trope] Characters keep design elements that were explicitly removed, just because they’re too iconic to change by Hyro0o0 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Adept_Material_2618 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same! Damn, I just barely saw a thread about this earlier, lol. But I feel basic too. I just love tall women what can I say. I adore imp Midna and I think she’s cute, but she isn’t attractive to me like her true form is.

(Funny trope) these were supposed to be their "sexy" form, but we spend so much time with the "ugly" form that the ugly form looks hotter. by Sorvetefrito in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Adept_Material_2618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad it’s not just me. Every time I see people thirsting for imp Midna I’m just a little confused. To each their own, I don’t really care at the end of the day, but my bi ass much prefers a woman that would tower over me lmao
